Seems weird to me that you'd put National Bourbon Day in mid-June. Bourbon is a winter spirit for me; come hot weather, I'm more inclined to drink gin and lighter spirits. If I were to pick a National Bourbon Day, it'd probably be somewhere around January.
But what the hell, I'll pour a boulevardier tonight.

I've been drinking a lot of Buff Trace and Simply Lemonade lately. It's the perfect easy summer time bourbon drink for me and the Mrs. I serve it in pint glass out on the back deck while the kids are playing in the sandbox in the afternoon.Quote:

While it's not the finest bourbon I've tasted, and I don't think you can get it anywhere outside of northern New Mexico (yet), But the next time you're skiing Taos you'd do wellmto take a little time and search out the Taos Lightning brand of bourbon. It isn't huge and hearty, but more bright and clean like Hirsch. $37 a bottle, and I'm a fan. Plus it's got that Taos thing going for it.
KGB Spirits seems to be on a roll. I went to a KGB DIstillery tasting at my LLS Saturday and tried their gin, bourbon, ryes, and absinthe(!). All of them were worthy IMO. They have a vodka that I didn't try, and I'm not a fan of anise/fennel but the absinthe was intersting. The 15 yo rye was awesome - reminded me more than a little of Pappy van Winkle - but spendy. I took home the bourbon and gin.
Had some Evan Williams 15 year old last night. I was pleasantly surprised, especially After hearing it's only 35 bucks.

Had the VW 12 at a restaurant in San Diego a few months ago. I was surprised by how smooth and complex it was. I'm on the list for a bottle the local ABC, along with the PVW 15 and some George T Stagg. Three year wait for the 20, and they're not taking orders anymore. In the meantime, I've got some WL Weller 12 on the way (I hope, fucking ABC lackies).
Been sipping on some Eagle Rare. It's good, but not great. Deciding what of the Buffalo Trace bourbons I want to try next (besides the WLW).

Just got a text from the old man that he got me a bottle of Weller Special Reserve, which may be what you have. He and I will put it up against the Eagle Rare. He ordered the wrong stuff, so he's gonna go back and see if they can get the 12 year old. Very bad news. Dropped into my local saloon, and the proprietor told me that Elijah Craig 18, the bourbon I started this thread gushing about, will be discontinued pretty much immediately. They are introducing a 20 year old, which is, of course, duh, the 18 year old two years older, but at almost twice the fucking price! I am besides myself.
Must be a bourbon shortage out there. I would suggest, if you see a bottle on the shelf, priced fairly, buy it, and the ones right next to it, immediately.
Had a bottle of Eagle Rare 10 last night while car-camping with some friends. Perfect on a chilly night sitting in beach chairs in front of a campfire telling lies.

Bought a bottle of Jim Beam 7 yr old. Drank it yesterday sitting at the Bluegrass festival on the Outer Banks.
Gotta say for $18 it was not too bad, straight over a couple ice cubes. pretty damn smooth, not a whole lot of complex flavors, but smooth was good enough for $18.

1st annual bluegrass festival was held on Roanoke Island in Manteo. Friday and Saturday got some pics I'll post up tomorrow. Some really good acts.Quote:

Really excited, just got emailed that the folks that are coming over for Turkey Day are bringing up some Jeffersons Presidential Select 18yr Bourbon...
That makes sense as there's also a severe Rittenhouse 100 shortage (which is also bottled by Heaven Hill). Combined with the disappearance of Wild Turkey 101 Rye, that leaves a pretty big hole in the rye market. Apparently everyone was caught off guard by the sudden popularity of the brown liquors.Quote:
