How'd it go?
Ok...I guess. I wasn't really sure what to expect, so I started out slooooow. Then I picked it up, but maybe too much. It was difficult run that defies it's elevation gain. Of the 31miles only about 2-3miles was flat...it was a series of up 100'...down 100'...up 200' down 100'...up 50'...down 100'...up...rinse repeat. It was extremely difficult to find a pace/flow. It was also not my favorite weather...the temp was upper 20s-mid30s,,,but leading up to it, it was in the 50s...and there was a 20-30mph wind, so I'd pop out of the forest (after getting warm and be greeted by a 30mph, 25deg gust straight to the face and chest. Not "cold" as much as "not acclimated to it."
The Salomon shoes worked great. They were super cush and I had no foot pain at the end. Not sure that it's related, but I have some tendonitis on the top of both feet...not painful...just annoying and noticeable.

No running for now; the good news: no more running for now means ALL OF THE CYCLING.
Over all, I'm pretty happy b/c it was pretty hard and I made it just fine and in time for beers with my 25K friends.
THANKS FOR ALL THE TIPS AND MOTIVATION!!!!
Nice race, smartyiak!

Congrats smartyiak! Great time indeed.
When’s the next one?!?
2021 was kind of a bastard for most, but it was especially bad on a personal level for a bunch of reasons, not the least of which was losing my Mom after a long and heartbreaking battle with the asshole known as dementia. The fuel for this depression fire was the fact that mountain biking no longer brought me joy. In fact, it did the complete opposite. Going into the new year, I needed something. I'm a pretty antsy person full of nervous energy, and I need an outlet. Being a depressed lump of shit wasn't gonna work for me. I needed to be a depressed active person. The answer came through a strangely well-timed set of conversations and ultimately, this video.
Watching that, what stood out was the guy saying that nothing like it existed anywhere else. And, strictly speaking, he's not wrong. That specific thing only exists there. But, things like it exist all over the place. In high school track, we had Agony, a half mile dirt path that shot straight up the side of the mountain. In college, we'd run laps up and down a steep old orchard road. And, five minutes from my house, there's a trail that climbs roughly 1,700 vertical feet over a mile and an half to a rock outcropping that overlooks our little town.

I saw the Incline vid and was immediately inspired to start hiking. Now, I had no intention of trying to do it thousands of times like the guy in the video. In fact, initially, my goal was just to climb it every day until I got sick of it. Weirdly, that never happened, and I kept going through the year, sometimes multiple times in a day. I got faster and eventually started running where it was reasonable on the climbs, and most of the descents. I wasn't obsessive about it. We still traveled and took vacations, so I had plenty of days off, but whenever I was able, I did the hike. I don't have an exact count, but I ended up somewhere in the neighborhood of 325 laps in 2022.

Into the first month, I decided to start taking pictures from the same spot to try and create a time lapse. Unfortunately, that meant I missed most of the amazing snow days we had early in the year.

It also took some time to fine-tune my location, so it's a little jumpy at first, but here's a look at a year of hiking in Central VA. FYI, click Settings and force 1080P resolution, it looks a lot better.
Oh dang. That's a half million feet of vert
Bagtagley- awesome on so many levels! Thanks for sharing. Here’s to ‘22!
Yeah, Bags!
Awesome. There’s something very mentally cleansing about running/steep hiking.
Cool Timelapse too

Anybody been following Candice's ultra marathon streak? She's currently at 125 consecutive days of running at least 32mi/day...which is 4,000 miles in the last four months. She also ran HURT 100 during the ultramarathon streak.
One of the more impressive things endurance things I've seen lately. She also is so photogenic even when she should be wrecked. More on her Twitter/IG: https://twitter.com/runcandice/statu...20096065798144
She used to live in the same town as I do. The few times I saw her out on the trail it was incredible how quickly and smoothly she runs. And she has the most incredible set of abs I've ever seen. She's a phenomenal athlete and I can't even begin to process running that far so many days in a row!
Hot damn that's impressive, giving her a follow. Reminds me of the iron cowboy documentary. Incredible what humans are capable of
I stopped following Candice after she went all whacko antivax and somewhat MAGA. Plus her social media was filled with oversharing about how she was the constant victim of haters.
She's not the first person to do that kind of mileage--many fast through hikers do it every year, often with packs. She's just the best at promoting herself.
Very cool. Seeing runners like that "in the wild" is pretty insane.
Yeah, maybe. But I've done a handful of ultras (50k and above) and also through hiked 1,600 miles of the PCT at a "decent pace" - around 30mpd for quite a while. Walking for 10hours/day is much easier on the body than running the same distance in 5-6 hours, ime. And promotion seems to be part of the game if you want to do things like that - I've seen way worse promoters than her.
But yeah...I did not know that. :( That's unfortunate for sure, and maybe I missed that part of her self promotion, as I only occasionally run across her on Twitter/IG.
Ran relatively mud and snow free trails along the river today for the first time in months. What a treat!
Sounds like the Barkley happened oar is happening?
Looks like a woman finished the 4 round but missed the cut off for 5th.
Several folks in on 5.
Badassery
GF did personal best on a 1 mile every hour last one standing race, 21 hrs straight. Sun, wind and rain. Small event with high class runners attending.
As of 27 hrs 3 are still going. Two wimens and a guy. If they keep going they add a mile every hour to the run.
The folks doing the 4 mile run every hr were killing it.
Good stuff.

Real interesting stories shared by a bunch of runners last weekend.
The accidental poopie incidents were very amusing.
Running the LBG on the GFs ankles.
Made an interesting sighting while out last weekend. This is ~1500 vert above the valley floor and ~300 vert below a long-abandoned road cut. You may need to zoom in on the lower left corner.

I like to call that Sisyphus’ shopping cart. Fun steep trail; hope it doesn’t get too found.
