Yep. She's pretty much completely full of shit which is sad because she really is a remarkable marathon swimmer. It's pretty crazy, too, the lengths some people go to defend her. Anyone who calls out her lying just doesn't like women, or they're a homophobe. The fact that she has demonstrably lied about her accomplishments many times doesn't seem to faze her defenders. The hate against her is just too much, IMO. Old-school homophobia and ageists play a part the way I see it, but it's not just them. Lance Armstrong gets a bigger pass because he's male and a much more popular sport.
I got no skin in this game and I'm not gonna argue. But she did swim many fucking miles at the age of 63. The onus is on her for not documenting as she should and just not being a likable person. Hubris.
I don't really see it as hate for the most part. More like justifiably calling her out. Her actual achievements are worthy of merit. She shouldn't need to lie and she needs to follow the rules for documenting long-distance swims or face the reality that they aren't going to count officially.Quote:

It's also a totally different thing (though both certainly involved lying). There's no question Lance won the TdF, but he lied his ass off about his use of steroids.
I think what she did -- whatever she did -- is remarkable. But the clear lying about tons of things is weird. And does raise some questions about what she actually did.
Yeah. At least 50% of my knowledge about nyad comes from this thread, but it sounds like a different thing from Lance. Lance was cheating and tried to hide it, as cheaters generally do. It sounds like a lot of nyad's lying is more compulsive and is less necessary. Which almost feels worse, because it's harder to find a rationale for it.Quote:

Finally got around to watching this one last night. LOVED it!!! I remember when all this stuff was going down and the film captured it pretty well. I know of course creative liberties were taken and some things were embellished for dramatic/comedic effect, BUT I love how well they captured the essence of the billionaire "villains" of the saga. Even if they played into that, I remember just how vile it was when those douchebags shut down GME trading on Robinhood, when they screwed with their IPO, when those shorting hedgefunders were absolutely shitting their pants when they were losing their butts, and when Ken Griffin absolutely freaking lied in that congressional hearing about them having nothing to do with Robinhood pausing trades (of course with zero repercussions). Finally got around to watching Beckham and was thoroughly entertained. Certainly made him and Posh seem a lot more down to earth and likeable than the media frenzy at the time did. I vividly remember the 98 World Cup and that red card but never realized how bad it was in England for him in the aftermath. Definitely recommend it even if you aren't a soccer fan, but if you are a fan then the soccer footage alone is worth it IMHO, the guy always had an amazing right foot.
Watched the Greatest Night in Pop last night for shits and grins. This is the documentary of gathering/herding all the hot stars and recording We Are The World in an incredibly short period of time back in '84/'85. The footage of all the stars interacting with each other and by themselves was revealing. A great insight as to people like Michael Jackson- just how talented, and how truly messed up/weird/drugged/anti-social many of them were. The section on Bob Dylan truly blew my mind. If you like sociology/psychology, and are a child of MTV like I was, you just might find it amusing.
Also, really had no idea until a few years ago how much of a big deal Lionel Richie was at that time, maybe I forgot. I mean I knew he had a lot of hits but his reach in the industry spans further than I guess I realized b/c Commodores.
Waylon Jennings donning his hat and walking out after Stevie Wonder suggesting singing a line in Swahili was hilarious. I had forgot he took part in it.
Also watched the short documentary on the filming of Society of the Snow- Who Were We On The Mountain. It covers all the actors, who were new to film, some had never seen snow before, their weight-loss journey as the filming progressed, the many fuselages they built and used, the crash scene, the terrain of the Andes and Grenada in filming. Real survivors were also featured and how they are very happy with the film. If you appreciated the movie, this is worth the 40 minute watch.
WATW - I saw that trailer pop up and was immediately on board and can’t wait to watch it. Never particularly liked the song, but the drama in its creation is fascinating. And ya Lionel wrote so much music it’s kind of hard to believe. Met him a few years back and he couldn’t have been nicer. It’s really a perspective trip to look at all the mega stars at the time and where are they now as well
Watched Dumb Money last night and thought it was great. Didn't think it was quite as good as The Big Short, but it was better than The Laundromat. Casting Seth Rogan as the rich guy that gets screwed was kinda funny.
Sort of amusing that "explaining how big money screws over normal people" is its own movie genre now. Not that rich people screwing over everyone else is anything new.
My wife made me watch "American Nightmare" and I have to say it was riveting. It's a documentary about a very strange kidnapping case that happened in Vallejo, California in 2015. It's probably best not to give anything away, but suffice it to say there are a few plot twists along the way.

Watched "X" the other night, which I found pretty entertaining. I'm not exactly a slasher genre aficionado, and I find a lot of movies in that genre to be pretty bad. But this one kept me amused, and it was good enough that my wife stayed awake the entire time (which is something of a rarity). It plays fun little games with how utterly predictable it is, it doesn't resort to cheap jump scares, and some of the deaths were pretty amusing. A mild spoiler warning: it's not for those with a strong aversion to geriatric nudity.
