Fun day at squaw, was on 3rd chair on kt and after 2 laps, got 4th chair on headwall.
Got this random pic today. While I waited for someone to dig themselves out of a nearby bomb hole, his buddy asked if I wanted him to take a picture.
Actually got a 4 shot sequence. This is the 3rd. I like the fat cirque back drop. So much snow out there.

Went back to this zone the next two laps. The run out was much more skied up when we returned.

Yeah, it wasn't even comparable IMO. Snow was pretty fun for about an hour or so yesterday, then got heavy quick. It's too bad the resorts can't open an hour earlier this time of year, although I realize there's a lot to get ready in the morning, especially when control work is needed (I did hear Mammoth had some 7:30am spring pow day openings last season, FWIW). It was less of an issue several years ago before they moved daylight savings up by a few weeks. Anyway, took some video at Alpine on Thursday...

Arrived at Carson pass this morning only to find the winds howling pretty good already and what seemed to be weather moving in, neither us thought it be much fun to be above Winnamucca lake with heavy winds. So we bailed to a more protected area, still fun soft turns to be had out there today.

Kirkwood was interesting today. Now I know why Sentinel was closed this morning for awhile and probably why palisades was closed all day. Anyway, my first few turns down Oops I immediately knew what I'd find today. Old, heavy, half-frozen pow....ugh. Best snow was found in true North facing aspects up high like Upper Cham and under Jims. Groomers were winter packed powder.
Storm came in around 9:30am right as I tried to roll to the backside. Riding Vista tow was interesting. Winds were howling on the ridges. Some decent snow squalls rolled in and out by the time I left at 2pm. The best part was that I snapped a ninja 916 heel piece on the top of Notch Chute with my son. Skiing on one ski through the drain was SUCH a great workout :)
anyone at the Wood tomorrow? Hopefully with some snow tonight it's more smoothness than chickenheads but only one way to find out.

Found some good protected snow out down toward Caples Lake from KW today. Lift rides were shitty and the snow wasn't great at the ski area so we went out in the world.
Ran into Geoff Clark out guiding some clients. Hadn't seen him in 20 years. Nice to catch up on a fun blustery day.

Going to squaw tomorrow for the first time this season and I'm really hoping they don't let me down .. fingers crossed for a little upper mountain action but I'm not getting my hopes up

ok on gas explosion, I was listening to a buddy a few beers too deep who used to be a rural firefighter and he previously talked to one of the guys standing with cones blocking access.
sounds like a residential propane tank had too much snow weight on it, which could cause a pressure buildup in the tank and maybe force open valves in the line. A new crack in the pipe from shifting warming snow and gas would escape from the tank. Propane would rush out of the crack from both the tank and the line to the house. The spark could potentially come from a pilot light in the house igniting the last vapors in the line. "it's just like your stove, times a thousand". He then went on to describe some crazy mist-curtain technique that would allow fighters to push the flame back at the tank and access the tank, but it requires lots of people and probably safer just to let it burn out.

I decided to do something new today. The wet snow plastered a chute lookers left of Upper Cham (1) which I like to call ChamWoW because why not. Has anybody ever seen this line (2) go through before?

It was about about 8' wide at the choke which also had a band of rocks, with a 10' crown directly overhanging a big barely snow covered boulder in the funnel.
I skirted the crown by hopping onto the hanging snowfield shoulder which turned out to be rotten snow bridging over dragon's teeth rocks that snagged. The top of the funnel turned out to be way steeper than I first thought, and could barely keep the shovels of my bowed skis edging. I lost the edge and fell to the rock which popped me forward so I just pointed in the air and straighted out, up the cham bowl shoulder, and flopped over.
