white sand-dunes made out of water-soluble basalt. eroded off the surrounding mountains, caught in the basin in an ancient lake. the lake dried out, the basalt precipitated, and these sand dunes were the result.

the sand is much lighter in color than normal sand dunes you see in places like the sahara or in death valley.

they've received much more rain than normal this winter, and in the lowest points in the valley (where the sand dunes are), the water table has actually risen to points above the surface.

the wind was doing its job, blowing the sand along the surface of the dunes. the dunes themselves move because of the wind, usually on the order of a couple of feet per year.

the next morning.. on the 4+ mile hike to the oklahoma highpoint, we felt like we were in a john wayne movie.

the highpoint is on one of the largest mesas in the U.S.; it extends about 40 miles.

but, like all mesas, it's pretty much flat on top. once we ascended the thing, we still had about a mile of hiking to get to the highpoint.

The highest point in oklahoma is marked by a 9-foot tall granite monument. We were 1605 miles from New York City.

ok, after another couple hundred miles of driving, we arrived at the kansas highpoint, mt. sunflower. (note the cattle guard)

actually, what blew my mind was that there were non-interstates complete with traffic lights, with speed limits of 70.

80 is entirely unreasonable, especially given that in the whole state there's nothing worth trying to get to that fast.

today sucks more than your average monday, i come in to my office today after getting a phone call at 11:00pm last nite that one of the guys that worked for me came in and took my tow truck out last nite drunk as hell, eye witness accounts say he could barely walk. left my office door wide open with his keys that he secretly made in the door and he took one of my trucks and got it stuck down the street in someones yard. thankfully he got arrested and no one got hurt but shit what a great monday

It's not tequila, it's Mezcal - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mezcal - and is widely available in the US. My little corner Liquor store has Gusano Rojo, Dos gusanos, and some other Mezcal for ~$15/750ml. I somewhat respect your ability to drink it - I think it tastes like liquid roadkill.

Mezcal is to tequila what MD 20/20 is to wine.

I was working in the river today in deep water. I got home and a friend that was working with me called to tell me that Fire and Rescue was pulling a body out about a thousand feet up river from where we were. I asked him if it was the woman that has been missing for the last month. He said they could not determine the sex of the floater yet.
