Super dumb question in-coming...
Just picked up my first pair of XC skis (skate). For waxing can I use my regular alpine wax or do I need something special for nordic? Most of the special nordic wax looks grip/classic specific. Used to Alpine race so have excessive amount of very temp specific fast waxes.
You'll be fine with the alpine wax. Technically, they are formulated differently. Racing alpine wax is designed to go at 100km/hr for 2 minutes, while xc racing wax is designed to do 30km/hr for 2 hours plus. In the real world, you will likely just have to wax more frequently with the alpine stuff as it will wear more quickly.
The new liquid waxes are great on top of a freshly brushed iron on wax, I use Star liquid with the built in sponge applicator, I do three passes on each ski.
Getting thin, but better than not skiing! From today at Woodstock Nordic

Jesus fuck had my first skate ski of the season yesterday and it was the most difficult thing I've done in many many months. Legs and lungs exploding, immediate zone 5 HR, pounding headache, and skiing like total shit. I hate this stupid sport but naturally gonna keep doing it
I agree on the above where you learn the technique/form well enough you can do it slow. My buddy who got me into it always stressed learning how to do it right and I agree and of the sort that knows... practice makes permanent. Lessons are great for this. I have had 3 total and all helped in sort of way, no matter how small the adjustments I learned via lesson. If you are flailing with a wide stance, looking down at you tips, bad pole timing, short gliding...etc. you don't want that shit engrained in your technique. It sucks to do 3-4hr long snowmobile road skates with poor form and not go very far. Patience and practice lead to more fun and hella longer ski days
I finally got out on to some real trails for a 8 mile classic ski. About 600 vert. I have to say I was a bit underwhelmed. I didn’t go too fast but it wasn’t very difficult. Stayed zone 2 most of the time. Zero ass kicking like mountain biking or actual BC skiing.
Are you supposed to stay in the track when you go downhill?
Only game in town! Down to 3k but it’s easy to find the sweet spot when it’s spring snow, eastern corn is good skiing. Dartmouth kids were ripping it up!

Second time really doing classic, first time on my own new stuff. I reiterate, if it feels like it’s not a workout, go harder.

Blue Hills Nordic, just 2 miles from Christie Mountain.
Today I did 3 hours of lift served followed by 2 hours of Nordic. (classic)

Anyone want this before I toss it in a scrap metal bin? Shipping is a pretty hard no. I live in Northwestern VT. Hopefully you have a line on cartridges for it because from what I've come across they are no longer sold in the US.

Dang, maybe there is an adapter to use US bottles?
Knew a guy who had one years ago and he carried it on the trail for on the spot waxing. Awesome for changing condition.
GF is flying to a skate ski race & I’m looking for hard shell travel case recommendations. I guess the Series 1 sport tube is a good option?
Or maybe a fishing rod case could work? She’s just taking a single pair plus poles.
If they’re NNN, which they prolly are, you can slide off the bindings for space.
Went up to Green Woodlands today, just up past the Dartmouth Skiway. Bob Green is the single largest landowner in the state of New Hampshire. He’s opened it up to the public all for free. The MTB, machine made flow trails go on for miles, like thirty miles with more on the way. He’s been grooming Nordic for years also, two full sized Bombardiers. The place is beautiful, it’s in the middle of nowhere, ponds and views, warming huts that are stocked for free! There is like six of these huts, all different and all cool as hell, free M&M’s, Twix, Reece’s, water with a hot plate, ramen, cup of noodles, Swiss Miss it’s heaven dudes! The first hut is located just up from the main parking lot, it has a bunch of ‘loaner ski’s’, how cool is that? If we get more snow and they can start to connect the dots, it makes for an easy all day ski. Water and food is never more easy to deal with, it’s all right there on the trails!

From today, I skied almost 17 miles, so nice to see some winter. It’s grim back east, y’all.

I finally got everyone out of the house and the kids back to school, which means I'm able to sneak out for some skiing solo again as opposed to hot chocolate runs with the kids.
Here are a few shots from the last week or so. Conditions have been tricky with lots of new snow with some "wintry mix" thrown in, so I've been spending more time on the classic skis than usual but got a nice 10k skate in today.

Was wondering if anyone here has these or has skied these?
What do you think of them?
They look interesting and i have been checking them out for a while. I am well used to my stick and rip skinz.
.
i demo'd a pair of altai hoks that use synthetic strips embedded in the base
the grip is great but almost zero glide
snowshoes disguised as skis
i think you would be disappointed ....
YMMV
.
Those Madshus are nothing like the Altai hoks. We sell and rent the hoks and we also sell different types of skin skis, but not the partial edge style. Skin skis like the Madshus are a little less easy to use than fish scales in that application. Taking the skin outside the track is harder to get glide because it tends to stay in contact with the snow.
Well, the Hok is marketed as a ski shoe. They have plenty of glide in the right snow. Dry cold powder and they are plenty fun in rolling terrain in the woods. Wax on the skins improves grip and glide.
The Kom is a way better choice for XCD. They’re surprisingly floaty and fast. My only gripe is that I wish they came in a 185. That would be an awesome corn touring ski. I’ve pestered Nils about a 185 buy the molds are too expensive unless he got a bunch of pre orders
