Forgive me for double dipping but I found a much better photo of the tank from last night. Pictured next to size 13 Clark Wallabee for reference. Attachment 422242

Morels, brookies, hoppers, and dags. Except for a bit of smoke from Idaho, was a nice weekend away from the crowds.Attachment 422261Attachment 422262Attachment 422263Attachment 422264Attachment 422265

Bout time you got a tent that’s big enough for the three of you, Dibs.
Couple randoms from lately-ish:

Been fishing a stretch of creek on the edge town that everyone ignores and enjoying it more than the nearby rivers people have written guidebooks for. I've loved fishing with nobody around since I was a kid.

Recent trips to fish alpine lakes have been frustrating. Cutthroats sniffing fly after fly unimpressed. Advice welcome.

Not sure where you are, but in Montana a lot of the alpine lakes the trout are feeding below on little teeny tiny shrimp. Go subsurface.

If you are getting inspections and refusals at the surface, that suggests leader shy fish. Alpine lakes tend to be low in fertility and the bulk of the available bugs tends to be wind born terrestrials, flies, moths, etc. The food on the surface is a bit random, so most of time the fish aren't keyed in on a specific bug. There are exceptions. A huge nest of ants upwind of a lake can get the fish selective. Winged ants are probably the most common food source in august.
Those lakes are really clear and fish can see any leader dimple on the surface tension. Are you using 6x floro?
I think this is probably what's going on. I'll bring some skinny fluoro tippet next time. I've thrown ants, hoppers, beetles, and a variety of attractors, as well as nymphs and emergers. A range of sizes. Ants were getting the most consistent interest. Smaller flies and tippet are probably my best bet. I'll bring along some shrimp and leech patterns too. A rainbow warrior (which I suppose could pass for a mysis?) on a slow retrieve garnered some attention as well.
Also, my boy caught his first fish on a fly today. Good thing we had the net with us.

Keep in mind that mysis are light averse and they stay deep in the water column during daylight hours. I doubt any trout you are sight fishing near the surface are actively feeding on shrimp. You'll need to check stomach contents to verify that lake was seeded with shrimp. Mysis were stocked in some alpine lakes in a misguided attempt to increase forage. Unfortunately, they tend to overeat the phytoplankton at the base of the food chain and usually end up lowering fertility.
