Taking kids out for their first skinning tour... WP would maybe be easiest, but thinking about allenspark or hidden valley. Ideally, to do some skinning and not hit too many rocks. It’s not about the down. Has anyone been up to apark or hv lately? How bad is it?

Yes, HV about a week ago. It was obviously not great, but you could continuously skin to the road, and then above the road had a decently wide strip. Snows pretty hard so the occasional steeper sections requiring kick turns may be a bit tricky for first timers. But probably the best option for now.Quote:

Was gonna cut out of work early this afternoon but we have someone on vacation and someone out sick, so full days today and tomorrow...
But man is it good to see it snowing!
My afternoon email from Wolf Creek said 13 inches today! Not bad. Great to see snow on the ground here in Durango, even if it was only a half inch.
I'm sure it has been discussed in here a little, but anyone got any beta on Bluebird Backcountry?
My father decided to get a pass there this season and will be taking some lesson and maybe an Avy course. Seems like a good idea to me since I live too far away to mentor him, and the "inbounds" terrain is a great way to learn about the basics of backcountry skiing. We decided today to do a family ski day there around Christmas, with my sister (who has not backcountry skied at all before.) Anyone got any beta on the rental situation there? Would it be worth bringing my sister gear from the shop I work at or just taking care of it there? Thanks for any info, the new area looks like a big upgrade. I'm excited to check it out.

Not sure if/when we'll all ski together again as my step father is heading back to Italy, and his cancer treatments are becoming less effective. Some days he doesn't get out of bed. My mom was worried he wouldn't have the energy to ski anymore.
But he's still a ripping skier. He was skiing bumps wed-thurs. Then powder/soft chop all day Fri on his 70mm underfoot Stocklis, and doing it better than most. Did it all in rental boots because he feet were too swollen to use his own. I'm damn thankful that last day was such a good one (at least by this season's standards).
I hope they open resorts soon in Italy so he an keep skiing. It gives him energy for sure.

Touchy day today in the San Juan. The last storm came in with some wind and formed hard slabs and loaded an already questionable snowpack.
We had whumpfing and cracking all around us. Tons of windfuck and heavy hard slabs
But god damn I love skiing that shit! We kept it flat and our decision to be conservative was supported by what we found

A-Basin kicked some ass yesterday. Beautiful bluebird classic Colorado winter day.
Lenawee Parks and Falcon were chalky goodness with some fresh to be had in some areas. Lift lines were almost non-existent.
Much better than Loveland, where 10-20 min lift lines seem to be the norm right now (to ski a handful of groomers).

I rolled up to dry gulch lot at 1030 am, way behind a typical sat am i70 driving schedule. no traffic heading up the hill, people where moving slower on the way down the hill due to road conditions, but generally a pleasant i70 experience. skiing was only ok, but good to get out. lot was full after me and a buddy showed up.Quote:
