Pet or not it's nature in all it's harshness. Cats did not start out as pets and had they never been pets they'd still be out there breeding and killing just as dogs and every other animal that has been domesticated would be.

I'm willing to bet that the fact that cats have been domesticated has greatly reduced their numbers through spay & neuter programs.

At my bird feeder not only are the birds eating seed but there are rodents eating fallen seed, opposum and skunk eating rodents, cats eating rodents and birds and owls and hawks eating all of them. Mother nature pulls no punches.

I got my license tab renewal notice in the mail last week and noticed they actually expired at the end of July. Yeah, I should know that, but would it kill them to mail the notice so it actually arrives before the tabs have actually expired?

I got my new tabs for my RV in the mail a couple months ago. I walked out to put them on the plates, and as I peeled one off, a gust of wind blew the paper I was holding up into the sticker. The glue they use is tenacious; no way I could get the sticker off the paper. So now I have my sticker stuck to the registration certificate, and no way to get it off, and therefore my plates are now expired. And of course, no way to get to a DMV to get replacements.

The way Covid is going, I probably won’t be driving the RV anywhere until I need to renew in 1.75 years, so I guess I’ll just wait it out.

Along those same lines, registered my boat online. Stickers were supposed to be here over a month ago. I have been stopped three times now for expired tags on the boat. Showed them my temp receipt and they let me go but not after doing a complete inspection, each fucking time.
Each time I asked them if they have a way to enter me in their data base so as to avoid the unnecessary checks, they said they didn’t. So frustrating.

Truckee recently dealt with the problem by banning overnight parking on the ROW along Donner Lake. Most jurisdictions have bans on camping. The problem is apparently a court case that ruled you cannot prevent people from sleeping in their cars, so police have a difficult time enforcing a no-camping law. A ruling that was intended to protect homeless people winds up protecting people with monster RV's.

The number of domestic cats far exceeds the natural carrying capacity of the environment for wild cats.
In more urban environments rodent control has eliminated a main food source for cats, leaving birds.
In more urban environments natural predators of the cat have been eliminated or greatly reduced. Tons of free roaming domestic cats and feral cats in Sacramento, very few in Truckee and they don't live long.
Domestic cats have a protected environment to return to sleep etc.
Domestic cats are an introduced species and could be considered invasive. How many lynx and bobcats do you suppose were in pre-Columbian NA?
As far as bird on bird killing--given the declining numbers of songbirds in the US I oppose falconry. As far as natural bird on bird violence, that is a self-regulating ecosystem.

On the beach note, remember when people showed up to the beach with just a towel? You were really splashing out if you had a folding chair or a cooler. Now it seems like a lot of people bring a canopy or tent, giant inflatables or SUPs, etc. It's sort of nuts.

around here they put up the tent or whatever on the dock at 6 in the morning and then leave until the afternoon. I'm surprised more of that crap doesn't wind up in the water.

I don't think I can blame the mail system because this seems to happen every year. Most years I remember it's time to renew before I get the actual notice in the mail.

My wife has been fighting with the DMV for years over boat tags. They don't send renewal notices. Then when she does renew they charge a late fee and then never send the tags. And charge her for replacement tags.

I would like to see a study comparing the efficiency of bureaucracy by state and country with the number of Covid 19 cases. I bet the correlation is strong.

Nah, these are day trippers. You can tell because the tow vehicles and trailers are well kept and pretty new. And yes they show up with a full size RV to spend the day at the beach.

There are plenty who live in RVs as well. You can generally tell who they are because the RVs are run down pieces of shit that look like a moving yard sale and the owners look about as run down as their rigs.

They're not supposed to park overnight in town but they do. The city lets them get away with it on this and a few other roads while some litigation is worked through. This park was covid-closed for a while so some of them have moved on. I haven't driven through here lately on a normal day to see what's up. The city is supposed to be setting up designated overnight parking lots for the homeless which will allow them to enforce the ban on sleeping in vehicles and parking oversize vehicles.

Here they call them the contractors. People will show up at the beach with truckloads full of gear just like a contractor does at a jobsite with everything they'll need for the day. Huge fold out canopy tents, full size BBQs, coolers, generators, stereo systems, you name it, plus the whole family. And then there are people like the ones you see above who show up with a full size RV and just hang out in it. Seems like a lot of work to me.

Is there a towel allotment? How many towels may one lay down? Sun shade circa 1995 no longer en Vogue? No shade at all? Can the cooler hold a sixer? Little hibachi cool? Weenies on marshmallow skewers? Pushing your limits?

Bike helmet mfgs that can't figure out that air vents should also serve as sun glass holders. I'm looking at you Kask!

I was sitting at my desk browsing the kitty stoke thread with the mouse plugged in to recharge and I noticed this weird blurriness that looked a bit like smoke. Then I burn my index finger on the actively melting cable which happily sparked as I yanked the mouse away. What the hell?

Blame the rodent.

My new car didn't come with a CD player. It's not super annoying, but everyone knows when you play a CD vs bluetooth the sound is 10x better with a CD. #firstworldproblems

Your car audio almost certainly has a USB interface. You can put about 100 albums on a 16gb USB stick (bigger capacity might be too much for some cars to index properly). Rip them at 320 and you shouldn't be able to tell the difference from CD quality. If I had to carry around hundreds of CDs in my car instead of a ziploc of differently themed USB sticks, that shit would surely annoy me.

Satellite radio and a little community radio station with great music works for me. As an old fart I listen to more and more NPR talk radio and less and less music as time goes on. Sad.

I like CDs. They sound good, you listen to the whole album as intended, and they have fun covers and inserts.
