I stayed with friends at Kwood Friday night. Saaturday morning was in the parking lot getting my touring stuff together before heading down to Stevens, and security rolled up immediately to say the mountain was closed for the year.

Vailwood sucks. We need a new owner.
Dear Vailwood Security, I accessed your terrain legally and schralped it, BIG LULZ
There were a couple of dipshit security guards patrolling in their rav4 and they were total assholes. After we parted ways with them an old school mtn ops guy came out and gave us the run down, he at least knew howto talk to people. But yeah you will not be skinning from the lot or parking at Kirkwood without being super stealth.
Man they have become Nazi's over there, so is it legal to access there terrain from outside the base area?
Does not seem to be a Vail thing as Heavenly allows skinning

Uphill access is prohibited during day time operating hours
Evening Operations Checklist for Uphill Travel
Stay towards the center of the trail
Position yourself so that you are visible from above
Wear brightly colored clothing
Carry a light or headlamp
Obey all pertinent signage
Stay out of closed areas
No dogs
Stay clear of all Machinery and Snowmaking operations
Be aware that ski area emergency services are NOT available
If you leave from behind 7800' I don't believe that land is owned by Vail and it is outside the resort boundaries.
So no more of this?

Here's some video from a few laps at Alpine on Saturday before the snow turned to mank. Nothing too exciting terrain wise, just powder cruising...

While I certainly don't condone kirkwood security bullshit, it's been that way for a couple years now and y'all should adjust accordingly. If u can't entertain yourself with the multitude of real bc objectives in tahoe in play right now, then taking some xtra time to stealthily access kwood shouldn't be that big of a deal.
I'm just giving you shit. But:

We decided to crash the employee appreciation day at Heavenly, we appreciated being able to skin there unlike that other lame resort.

Where's Nacho?
That's him jumping off the mini cornice in the last pic. Sort of jumping i should say (the track above him was where he face planted off another feature).
While I have adjusted and can still access Kirkwood with little problem that doesn't mean we have to give up. This is OUR land they're holding us back from and it also includes access points to the Emigrant Lake area, Thunder Bowl and more. And the fact that they have gotten away with it for a couple years makes it worse, not better. Add to that their gestapo tactics on closing day, and their marketing and pricing program specifically designed to cater to the rich and keep it out of the reach of those with less resources and it's not something I'm comfortable with on FS lands.
I feel there will be changes in the future in regards to easements and those wheels are already in motion. But much more needs to be done. To that end, you can write to

More awesomeness-
You may have heard Heavenly was planning on opening the gondola to mountain bikes in the future. What I'm hearing now is that those plans are gone but instead you'll be able to take an awesome ATV tour. WTF?
Plus, it's really awesome post season. This was from the last year hiking was allowed.
and lots more pics here - http://www.powdork.com/2011/oh-may-god/
(it says they reopened on the 29th. Did that actually happen?)
My bad- the hiking was cut off at the end of the 12/13 year. It was supposedly temporary due to the construction of the new patrol building at the top of 10 (and to keep people from crashing the Bobby Brown/Red Bull party on the back side). Then it became permanent with a 'if you're smart and stay out of the way it's ok attitude. Now it's what it is now.
Just sayin
Rather then deal with the skin cops some discretion and stealth could be applied to avoid them all together.
But by all means; FIGHT THE POWER!!!
^For sure. Boots on, skins on pull up to 7 and go.

Jay Peak, with all it's troubles and lack of snow, will be open this weekend
Do you know if Heavenly is planning to go all MTB park like Northstar or would it just be a nice quick ride to the top and then you can access all of the regular trails from there? The latter would be awesome, actually. Unless of course there's a bunch of ATV's around there.
From what I understand it will be more of an intermediate park so not really competing with Northstar. You would ride the Gondola up and the park would be above east peak lodge. Tamba is going after 100k Grant right now to help build a new trail from this zone (Panorama trail) that will connect to the bottom of VanSickle with a jumping off point onto the TRT near Mott. I would definitely get a pass, couple quick runs in the Park then head off on the Rim to wherever after that!
There is a trails summit coming up in early May for those interested to hear whats going on with this and other projects

^That's good to hear.
