Pretty. I wonder if it would be possible to do something with a photo like this to add the slightest hint up something to the dark portion of the image. Like, the faintest detail from a longer exposure. I do like the mysteriousness of a dark silhouette, though.Quote:

As you can see, there was a luminance tremendous amount of noise in the image even with a 5 min exposure (it was way past twilight when I took this). By taking that part of the image to black, it essentially reduces (eliminates) the amount of noise in that part of the image. You can try this on your own. Under expose an image by a couple of stops and then push it back up those two stops. You'll see the noise level really increase in the shadow areas.
I could have pushed the exposure even longer to reduce the noise, but I would have burned the sky and lost the detail there. Given that this image is pretty much an abstract at this point, a took a fair amount of liberty with the processing.

Hey man. That was actually my first attempt so I'm not sure I'm ready to teach. In the MPC thread Gpetrics pointed me to Hugin which is some free panorama stitching software. As I was reading about that I realized that it could be used to do polar panoramas like the one I posted. I's always been curious when I had seen them so I gave it a shot. The "planet panorama" always intrigued me; I downloaded Hugin one time before and played around with it, but couldn't make it work well. I think I didn't take the right number/type of shots to get the 2:1 aspect ratio, so it came out all "pinched" in the wrong places.
