ON3P SKIS Discussion

Wren 98 is surprisingly good in bumps (even with kingpins mounted on them) because they're just soft enough in the tips. Not something I plan to do often but I was curious.

So... I'm liking my Wren 108's so much that I may not need my BG's anymore (which I've had for over 4 years). Blasphemy, I know, but they're just the perfect ski for me. We had 14-18 inches at Sugar Bowl the other day and while I had a blast on my BG's, I found myself kind of wishing I was on my Wrens, especially after the snow started to setup and get choppy. Took them out the next day after several more inches and my feelings were confirmed. I feel like I need something more than 8mm wider to make it worth the trade-off because they're just so dialed. Scott and Co - don't mess with these - they're perfect.

I am in need of some quiver advice... My current quiver is as follows: 10/11 186 Viciks, 10/11 186 BG's, 11/12 191 BG's, and 187 Protests. I enjoy each pair for different types of snow/terrain/etc. I think there is room in the quiver for a pair of 181 Kartel 98's, but I also want a pair of 187 BG's (mainly to try out the new technology vs. my old pairs), but realize that may cause some overlap in the quiver. I hate to get rid of any of the skis in the current quiver, but think it may be time to change things up. I really don't want to have more than 4 pairs of skis in my quiver, which I realize is blasphemy in the TGR world. Which should I remove/add? Yes, I want to stick with ON3P since I have had nothing but an awesome experience with their skis over the past 7 years...

Billy goat comes in a 184 or 189.

sell a pair of BG's and get Kartels. I think that will be the most diverse quiver if that's your goal.
otherwise, sell both BG's and get a new 184 BG for the ultimate BG experience.
Vicik and BG would be a pretty great 2-ski quiver.

Good to know. I read that the Wren 88 is stiffer than the 98 so probably wouldn't be as good in the bumps. Anyone use the Kartel to ski bumps? Guessing it would be even better since it's softer than the Wrens.

It was more about the TGR hype than the W112's. Most people here love the Wren's so I thought I could too.

Id go with the Kartel 98 for bumps. Unless you want to skim over the tops of bumps at speed or navigate larger bumps the Wrens are maneuverable but still prefer speed.

What about a stiffer layup Magnus?

I think you could definitely replace both older BGs with last year's 189 BG (or demo to see if you like the new asym). If you think you can handle a more progressive mount point, you could try the 186 Kartel 108 (stiffer than stock if you want it to charge) and then see if you still want to keep the Vicik. Or, if you like traditional mounts, replace Vicik with Wren 108 and then consider a 181 K98 for fun.

Basically:

181 K98
189 Wren 108
189 BG
187 Protest

OR

186 K108 (maybe stiffer than stock)
189 BG
187 Protest

It's fun to play with other people's theoretical money. :biggrin:

It's true RES on the BG is magical. So confident, stable, high-energy, loose, and predictable. I'm sure others have experienced this but blowing by other skiers in challenging snow and grinning ear to ear on my BG's might be one of the best feelings on the Mountain. Also having skiers catch up with you in line to ask about what skis you're on and to learn more about the brand is new. I do think the BG's provide skiers a competitive advantage (given proper conditions). Also, having owned a Wren 191 - the W108 kicked it out of bed. I get all the power and chargeability with more maneuverability.

Shout out to the guys at ON3P for the extra care on my orders! Hope to see you at a demo in Washington soon.

Its clear to me ON3P makes a superior ski. I'm a recent convert. After trying a pair out I've since bought 4 pairs in a short amount of time just to experience their line. Also I'll note that I'm almost 40 and the skis are not too much to push around for the older mags. My suggestion: order custom - you'll be having them awhile.

It's true RES on the BG is magical. So confident, stable, high-energy, loose, and predictable. I'm sure others have experienced this but blowing by other skiers in challenging snow and grinning ear to ear on my BG's might be one of the best feelings on the Mountain. Also having skiers catch up with you in line to ask about what skis you're on and to learn more about the brand is new. Totally agree with everything you said. You can rally with BG’s through very difficult, skied out snow, and turn exactly when/where you want. Great for low-vis resort days when you have like half a second to see a choppy powder bump through the fog, and turn quickly before I get bucked.

I feel that last years 189 BGs float better than my 2015 191s did on low angle, slow speed terrain. Once you get them up to speed, I didn’t notice a significant difference in float, except that the 189s are slightly more maneuverable (at any speed), without losing any top end. They also hook up on firmer snow better, and feel slightly more traditional, without losing any of those critical RES traits we adore so much.

Supergoats also float exceptionally well. Asym is definitely playing a part in that.

Yup. Well put. I've been trying to hit all the snow cycles = low viz. BG gives that trust-able confidence to keep you going

The steering from the center of boot is solid advice. The RES does take a few days to get the hang of. Haven't been on the 191 BG but 189 asym handles the get-back groomers as good as anything I've been on in its class.

Have you noticed on tracked out pow days heading back to the lift, on the higher traffic trails, you can just fly through turns in those small/medium powder bumps? The type of conditions that grab onto anything with less than a 25m sidecut, and make it hard for tighter skis to pick up speed?? It’s like the hooky bumps aren’t even there..

The RES shape takes it up to another level, when compared to more traditional powder skis with long sidecuts (like a Wren/Rx).

Yes. The ability to slalom cut-up medium density piles then pop air from one to another, link a few more turns, then shoot into a stash and mash a run out with such loose turnability all the while- is unmatched.

I like your idea of the Vicik/New BG combo plus adding a 98 Kartel for the reason below. I love the viciks but they are a bit slow in the bumps. I think if I were to get rid of either of the BG's, i would most likely get rid of the 191's since I really like the 186's in the trees.

You are onto something here, but it still leaves me wanting something skinny. I'd probably lean towards keeping the vicik and adding the 181 98 Kartel vs. the 108 Kartel. Going from the 191 BG to the 189, do you think I will wish I went with the SG instead of the 189?

My 191 Billy's mounted, but never skied are going up in the next couple of days. I have a heavily used pair (keeping) and SGs and need to thin the 115+ quiver...

Personally, I could ski the 186 K108 as a one ski quiver in the Front Range. It's great in trees, great in bumps, great in the light snow of the Front Range, and not noticeably worse than the K98 anywhere but the park IMHO. But I understand if you want something skinnier for your knees. Or if you want to keep the Vicik since it's more traditional, which was my first option...except I'd (eventually) replace 186 Vicik with 189 Wren 108 cuz if you're getting a 181 K98 you might as well make the middle ski bigger.

Re BG: I think the 189 BG could replace both your older pairs, while the SG would just replace your 191.

Personally, I like simplicity, and I think the 186 K108 and 189 RES BG would make a great 2-ski inbounds quiver for just about anywhere in western NA. YMMV.

Edit: Those sizes were for me @ 5'11" and 165# and how I like to ski. Smaller dudes might like a 181 K108 and 184 BG; Clydesdales the 191 K108 and 193 Super Goat; charging womenfolk the 176 K108 and 179 BG. Add stiffness depending on where you sit on the charging vs playful scale.

I plan to demo if possible, but I'm really leaning towards a K108 and BG setup. I'll keep my 184 Bibbys as well most likely. That makes me wonder if the 189 BG will be the way to go over the 184. But then I do spend more time in tight trees than wide open places, so the 184 BG seems to make more sense in that regard.

I went 189, zero problems in tight trees. You won't regret it. 6'2 fwiw
