Steve, what was your time, and place? Did you beat any PRs?
brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr facking cold this morning, 3 miles, 30 minutes, 30 degrees
First run in over a month, 3 miles in 26:51. Not good not bad, just happy to be running again.
Fuck, the Manchester Marathon inexplicably closed last weekend. So I called the running store that was accepting registration and was told that they ran out of t-shirts so they decided to close registration. Like I need another stupid t-shirt. So I guess I training is never a waste but I would have run a half last weekend if I had a clue when they would close registration.
I may be done racing for the season. I'll just focus more on fight training until snow flies.
Evidently, I'm running a pretty big race this Sunday.
Don't you hate it when your high expectations of yourself from months ago get shattered in the meantime? At one point of my training... circa June/July I was thinking that I might be able to shoot for Boston. Alas, the man has been giving it to me lately, so now I'm thinking less "race" and more "run" on Sunday.
If anybody's internet following the NYC Marathon - - 15858.
Run, road trip, run!!
kicking around the idea of a last minute dualthlon in prospect park next weekend.. i've never done a duathlon before but assume it's not much different than a plain ole tri .
also have a 5k turkey trot coming up where you jump in the Mystic River at the end (turkey trot "AND DIP" - heh :D ). currently lobbying (and failing) the fam to join me on that :)
speaking of marathons in NYC this weekend, come on out to the US Men's Olympic Marathon trials! This is it - one race, the top 3 go to beijing.
Saturday morning in the park. I'll be volunteering somewhere.

earl and i are going to watch! where are you going to be? maybe we'll swing by to say hello
anyone done the catalina island marathon (viva, i know you have, kinda)... just signed up for that one March 15th... psyched, the race sounds awesome, all trails and hills. Gotta figure out how to train for killer hills here in flatsville. can NOT take any more Harlem Hill repeats! :nonono2:
BD4A-
Just run the central park loop.
My best marathon times were based on training the loop. I would run the loop at -1 min. marathon pace. Keep dropping your time goals with every week. 1 loop per day keeps the doctor away.
Riverdale is hilly as all get out. The riverdale ramble course is tres difficult.
u sure you don't want to send me to train over in the south bronx? maybe east manhattan? maybe down by the docks off brighton beach :D :FIREdevil
i am SO SICK of running in the park... due to biking there a lot of week days. i barely go there anymore, do a lot of east river & west side highway for long runs.
stu if ya dont mind me asking, what was your best marathon time?
If you want to train on hills and are sick of the park, ride your bike across the george, lock it up, and run some of the hills in the palisades.
then ride home.
that'll do you..
I won't know where I'll be volunteering until I get there.
I'll SMS you my 20 when they assign it to me..
Not quite sure what my number is, but I'm still hoping to go for Boston. Probably not going to happen. I didn't in Chicago last year and this is a harder course. I'll probably finish this one instead of seizing up, though. You stop to take a piss...and you're frozen.
Ever done a marathon before?
Hey Skis - - Yup, this is #2 for me. I ran San Francisco last year in 3:50:45 so I'm hoping to top that time this year. I had some pretty wicked IT band issues on the previous one but have been very, very careful this time and (knock on wood) haven't had any problems. Without that, I'm hoping for 3:30:00 this time around but we shall see. Because my training basically got tossed out the window for the past 2 months, I'm not 100% positive where I'm at right now. I did my 20 miles in 2:40:00 so that's given me some confidence.
Wishing I could bottle up all this nervous energy and save it for Sunday!!
SF is a tough course. I did the first half a couple years ago. It's hard to imagine doing another 13 miles after climbing the Presidio, pounding down it and bouncing up and down the Richmond.
3:30 assumes an 8 min pace. If you could do a training run with that pace, you should be able to beat it during the real thing. Good luck!
I'm 4036.
Best of luck to all of the marathoners this weekend.
One man's opinion - just enjoy the race and forget about hitting split times, etc. It is an event to enjoy. The race has great crowds from mile 21-26, so it kinda stinks if you are really hurting and can't enjoy Fifth Avenue and the Park.
If you do want to qualify for Boston, position yourself in a stall grouping near the front of the race. NYRRC does not "police" stall positions and no one will stop you from hopping into the stall for runners who are going sub 3:00. This will let you get out of the midpack and you will be able to get into a comfortable rhythm early on.
With nice weather predicted in the forecast, 1st Avenue should be absolute bonkers. Soak it in. It is truly awesome.
Good Luck!
.. and be glad you didn't qualify for the olympic trials tomorrow!
with a hurricane noel 200 miles away, those 150 hearty souls have 50 mph winds to look forward to.

I was bored enough today to read all 19-pages of this thread. When did everybody and their mother get into long distance running? Suddenly marathons for everyone.
I'll stick with mile repeats until I vomit. Middle Distance is where it's at.
that's the way to do it ! i did 2 marathons and wised up. most the marathoners i know get stress factures, sprains, etc. before about 1/2 the distance races they do.
i say stay in the 10k's and kick out 6 minute miles while doing it. you'll still pass most everybody, stay in shape and can eat practically anything; but won't waste all your free time looping some park for hours.
People do marathons because it's an achievement. Anyone can run a 10K, few will ever be able to be fast enough to make it really impressive. Most young healthy people can do marathons too, but it requires a lot more work. You do see a lot of people "running" them pretty slowly, though.
Of course, my fast is an actual competitor's slow as hell.
Runner collapses at the Olympic trials. RIP, man.

My wife thinks she remembers this guy, who was well ahead of anything I could have dreamed of, he was on his way to the airport about the time I was coming up on MM20(at TC Marathon). From the article, he got his qualifier at Twin Cities, hence where my wife thinks she remembers him from. RIP, from readin his Bio in the Star Tribune, he was quite acomplished. I can't find out the info, but I do know most runners that had already qualified ran the 10 mile at Twin Cities this year rather than the full package. I can't imagine trying to put together two world class runs within a month, TC was Oct. 7th. That has to be exremely taxing on a guy. Most of the lead pack in any given race runs 2-3 a year, not 2 a month.
Thoughts and prayers to the family, from the Bio he was married, don't rememer if he had kids. Court! You had to have been out there, any info?

Thinking about Ryan Hall..
I first heard of him in january when he ran that sub-1hr half-marathon..
Then he did well in his first marathon in london.
and he annihilated the competition at this race.. made it look easy.. even said he could have run faster if he had to..
it made me think..
is ryan hall america's next lance armstrong?
(In the sense that he'll dominate his sport at the world level for years)

You crossed the line 12 seconds before me in SF. Maybe I could have done better, but some diet issues from the previous day came back to haunt me...twice in the first half.
I'm hoping for 3:30 on the next one as well, but :45/mile seems like a pretty significant improvement. Let us know how it went!
Oh man, the pain. I have trouble going up stairs, more trouble going down and I walk funny. Great. I ended up running a 3:27. I was on pace for Boston (3:10) for the first half, but after the Queensboro bridge, I just fell apart running up 1st ave. I probably could have run something like a 3:17 if I had paced myself for it...but I'm kind of happy I took the risk by trying for a fast time. After all, I already have the 3:22.
And I'm relieved I didn't qualify for Boston. Now I don't have to train for it and can focus entirely on skiing.
How'd you do, road trip? Everyone else?
That was a tougher run than I thought it was going to be! Don't get me wrong, it was incredible. New York knows how to celebrate a marathon! The entire city - the people, not the government - seems to really (REALLY) take pride in the marathon. The entire way (nearly), it was a wall of people cheering you on. Need water and the next stop is 3/4 miles ahead? Oh, what's this? A church with entire congregation outside handing out water bottles! Need a snack? Let's see, do you want twizlers, raisins, cookies, candy, bananas...
And each borough really tries to outdo the next. If you take 1st Ave out of the picture (because that insanity is all imported), then I might actually give the nod to the Bronx! You are only there a very short period, but they really made you remember it! It's tough to say that though.. I mean Brooklyn really takes their role in the marathon really seriously.
In the end, I was satisfied with my run. I wanted to do better coming in, but going out I'm pleased with my ~3:43:09 (my watch). It was a much tougher race than I thought it would be. The hills weren't *that bad* but they were omnipresent. But what really made it tough was what makes it great: the people! People, people everywhere! I don't think I ever was able to get into a nice comfortable stride for any length of time. Going up 1st was about as close as I got; the rest of the time, I was zigzagging through people, avoiding people who would randomly turn on breaks, ect...
I felt pretty good for most of the run. Nearing the end (say, mile 22 on), my legs started feeling a little tired, but worse was feet. I felt the full marathon on them and probably sacrificed a toenail to the cause (look for the follow-up)! Turning up towards the finish (and it is an "up"), I was contemplating going for something.. but I was well beyond 3:40 and comfortably ahead of 3:45, so I just took it all in.
And you know how the post-ski day beer tastes so good? The post-marathon beer is that x100 !!!
Sorry I missed ya, Court but thank you for the texts!! Their timing was perfect!! I had only realized I was at the mile 18 water station when I was halfway past it. I nearly got whiplash (okay, not really) looking left-right, left-right for ya!
So now that that's done... I'm thinking I might take 2008 off for marathons! (we shall see..).
Now = bed time!
Congrats, Skis! And great simultaneous post!!
A buddy of mine shooting for Boston finished at 3:29 <sad face> but his friend actually ran a 2:47!!
Congratulations, dude. I have to disagree with you about the Bronx. Less crowded than elsewhere. Maybe not as barren as 5th ave around 140th, but still not too crowded. My favorite Bronx sign, "blah blah Bronx. See you again next year." I realized that I hadn't been to the Bronx for the 2.5 years I've lived in NY. I've been through, but never stopped. I liked the Brooklyn crowds best, but maybe that's because I was on pace and feeling great.
