What is the group's consensus on a 10' dry fly rod?
Found a great deal on a 4wt Winston Pure in 10' length and I am sorely tempted.

My opinion don't mean shit but I like my 3 and 4wts shorter since I'm typically fishing them on small creeks that have tight bushes etc. If its gonna be strictly a dry fly rig for the boat than no problem. I've been fishing my 8'6" 4wt a lot lately since I have like 10 rods that all need repairs. Also N+1 or some shit..

I think the perfect western fly rod is a 9 foot 5 weight, until of course you start adding to the quiver - I am pretty sure I am over 20 rods, and that’s just my fresh water rods…Quote:

It’s all very subjective, but a 10ft slower action 4wt doesn’t really appeal to me. I think it could feel whippy and harder to control the tip and loop, with minimal gains for the added reach. A 10ft 4wt euro rig has its place but that’s not really my jam. I do have some friends who fish a lot of still water that like the 10ft casting rods.Quote:

I’ve been absolutely blown away with the 9ft 5wt Scott centric. For me this is the perfect western trout rod. Fast action but so much more feel and control then my others. Really thinking about adding the 6 or the 4.
Long ago I had a Loomis 10 foot 4 weight that was designed for high stick nymphing.
Of course that’s called Euro nymphing now. It was just ok as a dry fly rod. I liked it if I was fishing a small creek that just had high grass, (think Flat Creek in Wyoming), and it was easier to do the cast over the grass. Otherwise…When it broke I got a 9 x 4, and my favorite 3 is an 8’.
Yeah you guys are all right - appreciate the good advice. I just got excited on a killer deal for a nice Winston, but if I'm going to spend big money (for me) on a rod, I want it to be perfect.
And I agree re: 5wt 9ft being the perfect Western quiver of one fly rod, but I love love love my 4wt TFO for throwing dry flies on a perfect day. Yes it sucks in wind and yes I don't really nymph with it, but it's still a joy.

Yep, 4 wt dry fly rods are sweet. And then you will find how nice a 9" 6wt throws big hopper patterns and smaller streamers. And then you will want to targeting huge browns in the fall with meaty articulated streamers and start looking for a 7 or 8wt. And then you'll start looking for a 7" 3wt to chase blue lines in the spring. And then you'll start looking into glass because it's pretty fun for that but also for other stuff, too. Then you'll book a trip for saltwater somewhere... And on.Quote:

For spring creeks Mrs. Plug and I like a 3 or 4 depending on the size of the creek, etc. and I bought her a Winston 3 a hundred years ago. It’s beautiful, but slow. Too slow now compared to modern rods, so I’ve liked Loomis, so I bought her an Edge 4. Ho. Li. Shit. Is that thing nice. So I waited for their 30% sale and got a 3. It’s amazing.
Well they had another 30% sale so I got an 8.

After a long day of losing fish, decorating the outdoors with flies, untangling profoundly snarled leaders, and unleashing tirades of exquisite vitriol, I finally managed to catch a burly cutthroat, and take a bad picture:

After setting him loose, I managed to lose three flies in a half an hour, switched to a wooley bugger streamer, and caught my first ever bull trout.

Early June on the Henry's is a real roll of the dice. I'm not just talking about unreliable weather. If it's been a good snow year, the water is going to be high and off-color in early June and the dry fly action will be weak. Moreover, in early June, the Henry's is often the one river in the area that isn't in full blown run-off. That plus the most over-hyped hatch of the season means the Henry's is stooooopid crowded. I can't predict next year's snowpack or the weather but I can tell you with certainty that the Henry's salmonfly hatch will be crowded past the point of diminishing returns.Quote:

I wouldn’t bother showing up before then. The drake hatch was borderline non existent on opening weekend this spring. Contrast to 2021 when there were so many the seagulls were eating most of them. Since I have been spending to much on gas this week, I took a short drive to the Rattlesnake Creek trailhead, then rode my bike around 6.5 miles to where I could fish, enjoying the scenery as I put on my waders:

I hooked a fish on my first cast, then lost him as I fumbled with my net. He'd taken the blue wing olive I was trailing behind an October caddis, which is what I had been using yesterday. I kept throwing the same thing for quite a while without another bite. I switched out eventually but had no luck with anything else. The fish weren't biting though there were plenty of October caddises flying around, as well as blue wing olives. So shortly before it was time to leave, I put the BWO back on, and said to myself as I chucked it into the water, "Well I'm not going to catch anything here..." on cue, a healthy cutty took it hard and gave a good fight. He was much bigger than anything I caught last time, pretty good fish from the little creek.

Got ahold of the woman that wrote the book my buddy Ross left me, ordered her two other books about Brown’s Park, every time I go out there I become more fascinated with the history of the area.

a couple shitty pictures from last weekend.
was my first time in a drift boat. prepped with a huge video lesson. I’ve rowed a lot of other watercraft, but came in with low expectations of how I’d do. feel like I held my own rowing but it was also a super slow river
beautiful day, caught some decent fish, got too close to some wildlife, fishing out of a drift boat is pretty damn civilized
