I’ve lived deep in the woods for 20 years, until recently. Going camping meant actually spending time closer to people than I would be sitting around a bonfire in my back yard. As a result, we didn’t go.
Well, it’s been 7 months since we moved to town and when I came across a homemade beer can alcohol stove I assumed I threw away, it gave me inspiration for a S24O to the mountains.
So I literally found some old canoe straps to cut down, pulled the others from the skis, and attached some stuff sacks to the bike. I was gone just after lunch.

I hit my first short stretch of gravel before leaving the city limits, but most of this trip was on paved roads. A few hours later I arrived at the state park.

After dinner I set out to locate a brook I knew of to get some water for the morning. I wish I had brought something other than Crocs to hike in as a trip up to Sunset Ridge would have been nice. Instead I turned around after a mile and headed back to camp.
While I waited for the stars and that beautiful crescent moon to come out, my serene backcountry mood was broken (many times over) buy a bunch of drunk maggots texting each other.
Temps in the mid-40s meant I was snug all night long. I was awoken by Disney fucking levels of animal chatter around 6am but it felt good to just lay in my sleeping bag a while longer.
I’m so happy to have learned about those Starbucks instant coffee packets.
