East Coast Surf

Ya good stuff. One thing i really appreciate about york during long period swells is the micro shifts in the tides and the outflow streams that empty into the lineup creating little underwater sand points every few hundred yards. You can sit in one spot where it stops working completely and in 10 minutes it's perfect. And like i said about there being closeouts yesterday, there were easily as many that were rip-able for long distances that wouldn't close. Growing up on the cape, there were whole seasons where everything and everywhere were like one big closeout. The wall nh can get like that.

Well, surfing down the cape was a bust, didn't even get out once. Just got in the truck and parked my lazy arse on Sandy Neck every day for two weeks. I move into school tomorrow, finally will have some reasonable proximity to the breaks!!

was teaching my girlfriend to surf at second beach yesterday in Newport and broke my stupid ankle hopping off the board into 2 foot water. I didn't even twist it or anything, just landed hard and was surprised by how shallow the water was. Went back out to surf one more tiny tiny wave and limped back to the car but today can't support my own weight. And I was really looking forward to hurricane season. Damn it.

heard the cape was only good for a coupla short windows during cristobol. Man i don't missing living there as a surfer one bit. It's good like 1/8th the time that it is in maine due to winds alone.

Lookin kinda tiny here for the next week or so. Cycling fitness is building in monstrous proportions as of late. Lets surf together when the ocean cooperates.

Ugh, sorry to hear. My uncle did the same exact thing a coupla years ago. That scenario has always freaked me out. I always jump into shallow water like a crouched ninja if i can.

Cristobal came in strong up north, then a nice bonus windswell timed nicely with my car breaking down

Waves have been shit here for the last few days but Wednesday or Thursday might be decent. Just got a new board so im itching to get out. In other news. 60% chance of a new formation in the next 5 days. Could amount to nothing but one can only hope.

Wull, this morning sure was fun and purdy. Waist to chest and super clean north of the general store. God i love how nubble protects when winds are north thru northeast.

Ogt tomorrrow with the south winds. Should be shoulder high sets. Yum.

While twisting a few posters panties in the alpinezone Tr i remembered a part of this mornings session that i forgot to share.

so i'm sitting out in the water with my GAY friend, a super strong SUP surfer. She was getting some great waves. No one else around and what do ya know? Yup, 3 bodies with boards walking in a pack RIGHT towards us. I go, fucking quebexicans and she laughs. Carrying boards all awkward, leashes on at the car...... They paddle right towards where we sat with literally 1/2 mile of clean empty peaks. WHY?!

so a peak comes towards me and quebegaper #1 and the fucker starts paddling just to my right for the right that was coming. He drops in as i'm already up and i grab the nose of his board and heave him up and off of the wave as he yells sorry sorry sorry!!!!!

Heh fucking frenchies. They stayed far away after that:)

I swear you actually must be my childhood friend crag. He has told me the same story at least seven times.

ogt was THE call this am. Unfortunately everyone else in maine knew it was also and for the 1st time since like forever i wasn't the 1st one in the water. Nope, pulled up to 8 guys sitting on the peak at 620 am:eek:. I almost just went home to go ride my bike, but said fuckit and suited up. Waist to chest+ and thick. The north peak was breaking in wicked shallow water so any dismounts or kickouts were done in a flat laid out fashion to avoid wrecking legs and limbs.

even tho it was the busiest i've seen it while out it was pretty spread and i hung on the middle peak and had some fun ones. The crowd grew to 15 at one point. Devistating.

Fun morning. Tomorrow could be the sweet one:)

It's brutal how fucking ignorant they all are...not just the water...everywhere! Even the grocery store for christ sakes. Was at Fort Rock two wkends ago and they showed up there too! WTF? You don't need to come here to mtn bike!

I dunno, maybe cali is easy on the eyes or something, but it seems to me the becky ladies have somehow americanized, as compared to my youth. Sure, there is the occasional super hottie in the mix, but the general pool has super sized. Seems to me when I was a kid in maine, they were all hotties. Especially the moms. Now, I thinks they stop at dds when they come state side.

Pretty much flat today. The 4' @8/9 at 2am didnt fare well with the moderate offshores and by 5am, poof gone.

a lot of the more subtle lessons in surfing just aren't learned by arming up the SUV and trippin' down to hampton with 6 of your closest bros.

also, not being able to say 'hello' without giving away the accent means that a 'tough guy' attitude tends to be the default

i was lucky enough to be taught to never paddle out in a group, look for waves going unridden, etc

so Rog, will my clip-on maine plate be ready soon?

just bustin rudeman. My 1st car was a volvo dl wagon 1980. My board and me slept in that thing on many a rhody trip in my teens.

Mppg, nc is looking messy for most of next week and maine is full on 100% clean all week with similar and plus size expected. Come to maine!

This week looks promising. Planning to head up to Maine Tuesday PM or Wednesday AM. Looking for some beta on campgrounds near Higgins beach area, or just good places to crash for a night or two. Thanks.

Why Higgins?

If you end up in Wells stop in at Sea Vu West. The owner/manager is a life long local surfer and will share beta.

How does long sands handle a 14-15 sec period swell? The swell's not huge but with the period and the tides I may need to look at some points or reefs for this one or travel north for before work sessions.

generally, and depending on swell angle you can do ok. anything over 11/12 seconds and you're searching for shoulders/corners of course. some of the 'ok' is that it won't be crowded like a rock reef/point which ups the value for me. it'll be high tide mornings as i said, which long sands likes. more water there the better, imo. thursday morning could be quite the paddle battle which would be good to keep the crowds down.

the late august swell we had was consistent 14 second in the head high range and there were plenty of good workable waves out in front of the restaurant.

if it's real bad (like really bad) closeout city i'll prolly just head down to nh and find some rock to surf over.

I can list five breaks that basically no one surfs that love the 14s stuff much closer to your home than nh. You really need to travel further north than ogt some time. You know, if it happens to be really really bad. As for long sands, the restaurant acts more like a mixed break with the rock outcroppings nearby. And the cobbles on the north end actually need the longer period.

i hear ya, and ya i try to avoid nh like the plague these days only due to crowds.

Fuck crowds. That is the beauty of being in Maine. There is really only three spots that ever get crowded from my experience. Te river, gooches and higs. Occasionally on an exceptional day the outside wells jetty can build a crowd, but last time I saw or heard of that was dec of 94. Fuck that day was good out there.

Another reason why I like central over southern cal. Plenty of surfers an crowds here in town, but you can still get excellent waves solo, or with a small group, just a few miles north. Just have to work a whole lot harder at it here than there.
