Hjortleifson has been heard, the DynaFit Vulcan

Day 2 I tried pulling the tongues out for the long skin up from town to the top of the ski hill and you definatley can feel the extra ROM, I'm not sure if I would pull them every time for the up but for the long tour probably

I pulled the power strap off one of the 2 screws holding it on the back of the boot, I fixed it with a washer but the eyelets crimped into the strap are not going to be adequte

I don't think I had the cuffs locked on day one, I was skiing them with the cuff closed but not locked in ski mode, you do have to push forward and check to make sure the top buckle fully seats ...and then they ski fantastic !

Anyone put their mercury's in dukes yet?

I'm not getting the toe drop I want to make a card slide between the AFD and the sole!

I am still using an FR+ with no problems, got to quit skiing and get around to mounting the Verts!

No problems here.

Just got a pair of 26.5 Mercuries to try on, definitely not for me.
Super tight over the instep, but then super roomy forward of that.
So much so that I don't think even intuitions would work.

Bought at Bentgate with the 20% off, so if anyone wants I will sell before I return them.

I had to go with Intuitions with a very very thin insole. Skis better than with the stock liner IMO. The stock liner fucking sucks ass...well it does for me at least. Too fucking fiddly to get the tongue to sit right and takes up too much space on the instep on my foot. I have not lost any meaningful amount of tour flex either. Had a day on hill with them today charging through chop....awesome boot.

Anyone gots 29 Merc shells they do not need?

Tried on some 28 Vulcans yesterday (I'd be borderline 27/28 shell but no 27 in stock). Pretty good overall and not overly-stiff IMO, but way too much room in the toebox for my foot. Makes me feel better about not being able to afford them. I'll make my Bodacious work another year, then see what new options surface.

yup thats how mine were till I tried the different liner

look at the stock liner they got that big thick rubber base and the tounge...just a bit too much thickness

this is another example of where it would be nice to buy the shell and boot seperate

The TLT5 boots have a squre knob as well, but it's smaller and the tongue is softer so it seems easier to get in.

I had the same problem with my Barons.
I just lowered my DIN a bit.... it's a bummer though. Glad I wasn't the only one!

Still waiting for my 29.5 Vulcans. My Rocker2 115's are getting anxious!

Don't forget you can always grind the sole for clearance.

Bumping for some Mercury love... Just loving mine. Still trying to decide if with tongue in it's just a little too stiff or whether I need to get used to it. Maybe doing some tongue mods down the road I guess?

Anyone else notice what feels like the sole of bot under ball of foot seems to flex when walking on hard ground? It might be the Rubber lug under that part of boot flexing or maybe that I haven't put a real foot-bed in yet and with the stock one I'm feeling something of the attached boot board?

Scotsman (Vulcan) and I have discussed that they also might perhaps have some anti-dynafit ramp angle thing going on?

Grind that square piece off the internal tongue so its easier to get in and out.

I love it in pow without the tongue. In chopped up inbounds snow I like the tongue.

The Maestrale RS and Mercury are almost as stiff as each other. If anything I'd give the Scarpa the tiniest of percentiles over the Dynafit boot in fore-aft stiffness but both are awesome laterally.

The Mercury has a better walk mode (with an Intuition luxury). Will try with a Pro-tour liner also. The Scarpa is almost as good as the Mercury but you have to loosen all the buckles which makes for slower transitions.

The Maestrale, Maestrale RS, and now the Dynafit free-touring line (Mercury and Vulcan anyhow ---marketing barf buzz word) kind of make all other boots I've tried feel like gigantic piles of shit.

4 days on One PX and loving them. As stiff or maybe a tad stiffer fore-aft than the Zzeus. Laterally stiff as hell, like all Dynafit Ultralock cuff boots. Forward lean just right, i.e., same as my DIY-modded TLT5s and Zzeus (now dedicated lift-served boots). I really like the flex progression. No hard stops. Fit is quite different than the TLT5 and a bit different than the Zzeus. Ample forefoot width and volume. Great heel pocket -- sucks my heel down as well as the TLT5. Volume at the in-step buckle is pretty sensitive to buckle adjustment, but no problems. Tour/walk mode is near-TLT5. One PX definitely a keeper for mid-season tours; will save my TLT5s for spring tours and my waxless low angle touring rig (to be acquired).

You know what's amazing Steve? The Zzeus and Titans were so good when they came out. Then the TLT5 came out and it was stiff (yah I didn;t like the lack of progression but it was baller stiff); at least as stiff as the ZZeus and toured way better.

Now you got the Mercury and Vulcan and One quite simply kicking ass. Who the hell is going to buy the Titan and Titan UL? Unless they need the replaceable soles or it fits them better.

Dynafit (& Scarpa) are so far ahead of everyone else with these new lines. Edit - Fan boy hat on big time

Shell is great.

After a long day on the Duffy yesterday I've come to the decision the stock liners suck. Ordering Intuition Pro Tours ASAP.

EXACTLY great shell shitty liner AND because of that I say folks should just man up and buy the intuitions at the same time they buy the Mercury because it MAY influence your decision on shell size OR whether you buy the boot at all

6 days straight touring and at the hill on the mercury and I seem to have forgot about my alpine boots, except for the lack of AT sole this boot skis well enough for me to fill the one boot quiver

Something I didn't realize until my buddy pointed it out is the tongues are asymetric ...they are marked Left & Right

What intuition model are you guys using? Have been looking at luxuries or pro tour; the stock mercury liners are killin' me over the instep. Ready to bite the bullet...

Yeah, I would of bought them at the same time but I pro ordered my Mercury's will have to do the same for Intuition.
Oh well.

Has everyone basically just unscrewed the powerstrap from the boot and feed it through the tongue like I am doing? Seems to be the general consensus and what Hoji is doin'.

When I first tried the Vulcans on while carpet testing I was worried that they were too upright... when skiing in them with dynafits, the ramp angle inherent in the binding and the low heel create the right amount of forward lean( at least for me). Anybody using Vulcans/Mercurys with anything but dynafits( why would you buy a $1000 lightweight boots and put them into Barons or Dukes?????) will find them a bit upright IMO. Whether this was intended or otherwise, the boots forward lean( low heel) compensates for the ramp angle inherent in dynafit bindings.

before I got the stokes/verts mounted I was using mercury's with FR+/JJ's which is heavy but less heavy than what I was using before and I still feel a big difference ... the last boot I skinned was 4 buckle alpine

I'm sure you'll find quickly that the power strap will rip out of its 2 little screws on the back, already happened to me.
Apparently Dynafit specifically made it so you feed the powerstrap through the tongue loop thing.
I'm guessing it's for when you are skinning and remove the tongue you remove the strap at the same time.


Anywho, just decided to lace up the stock liner and changed the forward lean to 18 degrees rather than 15. We'll see what the changes do.

Next up: Grind off the little rectangle block, thanks Lee for that suggestion.

yeah I ripped out 1 screw already but its easily fixed with a washer, I left one strap off to compare to keeping one strap, I am betting the boot doesn't need it

OK, I've joined the Mercury tribe last night. Haven't molded the liners (got the 27.5 version which is supposed to have a more formed liner in any case?). For my high arch, these things rock. I'm a bit concerned over the fiddliness nature of the thing, I might have to just ditch the tongues. I also have to really yank on the top buckle to shut it which worries me when it's cold etc....time will tell.

Which boot are you coming from?

Black Diamond Factor 130 w/ SPK liners. I have them set up w/ the least amount of forward lean (14 degrees I think). I'm not going to be skiing as burly skis w/ them either (S3, Zag Purist, Movement Trust) so a bit softer shouldn't matter much at all.

Yup, and I think it's intentional. I've long figured that Dynafit built lots ramp angle into its bindings on the assumption that most AT boots have more upright cuffs and/or less internal ramp. (Rockered sole sometimes lessens boot ramp angle). When the TLT5 came out with its big forward lean it made no sense to me (and those others that modded the stock FL.) FWIW, I'll continue to shim my FT/Comfort/etc. toes to get the same RA as my Classic Speeds cuz I like the same RA across all my skis.

Good to hear. I'm looking to replace my 4-year old Spirit 4s this year or the next. Ideally, I'd like something that (a) fits well, of course; (b) is ~7 lbs or under; and (c) is a little stiffer/burlier than my Spirit 4's but not necessarily plug boot stiff. It'd also be nice if they are easy enough to get in and out of (the Spirit 4's are great in this regard).

I haven't paid much attention to developments in AT Boot technology in the past few years, but it sounds like the One PX and Maestrale RS fit the bill.

I hate lace up liners. Without laces found the tongue would move around too much and over/underlap the various cuffs when in walk mode. Plus a pain to get in and out of since the laces over instep just worked tighter and tighter.

Got some Bungee Stretch Laces which I've laced up just part way up the eyelets. Prevents the tongue flopping around like an over heated Golden Retriever's and easy to get boot off.

Tried my 26.5s with PW intuitions, clearly better than stock liners particularly over instep (stock way too thick there). But still huge in the forefoot, and this is compared to my Quadrant which is already on the roomy side. Can't believe you guys aren't swimming around like me.

Meh, skied them today with laces and I actually quite liked it.

Another thing, skied the mercury's with the powerstraps detached and fed through the tongue loop, and I LOVED it!
I was able to bring the powerstrap a bit higher up which I found gave me much more control. Very happy with that.

All in all though, I'll be getting Intuition for my boots and recommending others to do so whom buy from me.

If these boots NEED Intuition liners right from day one I'd start calling that a fail.

They don't !!!...the stock liners are well made, designed to work with the boots( flex zones and stiffened tongue) and fit me and many other people very, very well. I tired my vulcans with intuition liners and actually prefer the stock liner. YMMV of course.

However, I do see a tendency among some people( not all ) to discover they NEED intuition liners as it makes them feel that their sensitivity is enhanced over other mere mortals and that they need this modification to allow them to release their full ripper potential. It adds to their self-esteem.

They're perhaps a touch on cold side? Or Maybe just I've got a tighter boot fit than I've been used to/need to pack out a little? I also like that they have a rubberized sole.

Putting a liner in that didn't have the Achilles tendon flex panel would be a mistake (as would a wrap liner IMO) since it's going to restrict range of motion in tour mode.

Dynafit liners could really use some help. They're heavy, cold, don't mold that well. It's relative to fit, BUT compared to intuitions, dynafit liners are pretty shitty.
