This is tricky. With snow levels around 1200m, this precludes a lot of the lower Austrian resorts like Kitz where you can stay in the trees. Southern France would be good if you're really hardy and like storm skiing. Let us know how you get on.Quote:

Does anyone know if chains are de riguer for Kitz ?
I just checked my chains from last year and they're the wrong size for my new car. Bit late to track some down for less that £100. Doh!
What sort of car do you have?
French dads car .... Renault laguna diesel, Front wheel drive. So chains would be a good idea if i can get them.... but this may be difficult at 5 hours notice .... in bristol

Weather keeps changing day by day. I'm heading to Innbruck on Saturday, will ski Sunday. I'm watching the weather every day, and I just can't wait to get down there.
I figure I'll just ask the guys at the rental shop which mountain in the area they'd be skiing at if they didn't have to work :biggrin:

On the other side of the Kitzbuheler Horn is St Johann in Tirol, then there's the Steinplatte/Waidring not too far away either. You can also ski the very big SkiWelt complex (Soll/Ellmau/Scheffau/Hopfgarten/Westendorf).
NB - Saas Fee looks to be the latest nucular hot spot for snow forecast.

Bovec is a thousand mile drive from London and the terrain is lousy. The Western Alps are going to be twatted this weekend...

You will not be able to see a thing at either Zermatt or Saas Fee this weekend. Big snow and howling winds will see to that. After the storm it'll be primo but even a metre of snow isn't going to cover those yawning crevasses.

roo- i dunno about les 7 laux firsthand. that report said 0cm base just before the 30cm dump so i presume that's all there is.

I managed to find some chains this afternoon..... I'm booked into the hotel in the centre of kitzbuhel . I'll be arriving at 8am tomorrow after the monster mileage mission.
I'll let you know how the snow is as i'm taking the laptop.

The winds this morning were so strong that most of the fluffy light pow that fell in Alpe d'Huez this week is now residing in Belgium.

seemed to hit farther norht than forecast. it was doing this last night. we ended up with probably 30cms around here in the alp vaudiose. roads were pretty messy this morning. had to bail on gstaad plans due to lack of chains. went to g3000 instead. dumping most of the day. :biggrin:

Started snowing this afternoon quite heavily but the freezing level was quite high. Sleet at the bottom of the slopes and white out at the top.
Off to axamer lizum tomorrow.
