There are few (if any) places like if you are looking for a traditional college experience, and for the right majors (comm, vet, and civil engineering) it is a top level academic institution. I think this is a bit overstated. Just look at the Spokane City Council and Mayor. Pretty much D affiliated including Lisa Brown who was just elected Mayor and is a former State Senate Majority Leader as a Democrat. Spokane, the city itself, is largely liberal while not the polar left. Surrounding areas are more conservative but that's not Spokane.

Agree. When I lived in Missoula we would go over to Spokane during the winter because it was sunny and warm compared to Montana.

I think it is a matter of perspective. Someone from Los Angeles probably thinks Spokane is gray and dreary, someone from Kalispell sure would not think that.

I used to do the annual Bloomsday run in Spokane in early May when the lilacs were blooming. My lilac tree in Missoula did not bloom until mid-June.

It is the only place I've run into uniformed and masked Proud Boys out for a march...

But I didn't get the feeling they actually lived there, nor did I get the feeling that anyone else wanted them to be there.

My daughter always thought she would go to Gonzaga. She got in, but through myriad circumstances ended up discovering Seattle University, which is another nonreligious jesuit school. She opted for the big city experience and absolutely loves it. Academically SU is the equal of Gonzaga, although less known. Approximately the same number of students but less of a party atmosphere.

Speaking for myself, I like Spokane, but when we visited the college the campus did not do much for me.

Yep. Folks should realize how many people out there quietly and respectfully go about their lives, despite having opposing sociopolitical views. Just nip any political conversations in the bud as soon as it might come up. Ive found that only assholes will push politics on someone who obviously tries to avoid it... and so that makes it real easy to filter out the assholes straight away.

And id agree that Spokane is a pretty moderate city all things being considered... or at least politics arent nearly enough of an issue to be in the top 10 reasons why you would/wouldnt want to live there.

Yeah, coming from Portland, it's actually refreshing to live somewhere that's more purple. I know that one of my neighbors and I have different views on politics (he forced that conversation) but he still uses his snow blower to plow my sidewalk after heavy snows (he does both sides of the street on our block, a real gentleman), and we always chat when we're working in our yards at the same time. I think it's healthy to get that perspective and see people on the other side of the aisle as people.
