thats nuts, ive had plenty of experience with rogue builders, but never to THAT level, good luck sorting it all out, hopefully can figure out who it is and enlighten them a bit with techniques so they can put that energy to better utilization

Land manager getting on my case to fix a blown out drain on steep trail Ive adopted.
Raked it. Put in an assload of grade reversals. Funny how pics flatten things out. I can barely stand on this pitch as its so steep.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e208e3abe9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...336a68d8bf.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ef738ab4c5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ffb1fbb44c.jpg
Installed a series of steps on another steep bithttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bf19a9c9be.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a91e3dbdba.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...23bc22663b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...db9bf2e846.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d007bfe0b2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6446190696.jpg
Got in over my head trying to move a big rock out of some bench cut. Gave up and built around the rockhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2bcb2c31fc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...de221acd15.jpg
haha, that immediately reminded me of this situation, where i really wanted to belly out the landing of a jump and found a nice rock buried...

you can see i recruited everyone to manhandle the rock, while i worked on the exit jump behind them
going back to grad school has been crushing me so not much dig time lately, but just got a summer internship across the street from local bike park so excited for shovel slaps after work this summer
Old trail section we last worked on 6 years ago had a groove worn into it from lots of traffic. Outside of turn had a drainage ditch into which people were inexplicably riding (nobody said mountainbikers were competent).
Dug the drainage ditch bigger to give the standing water somewhere to go. Excavated ditch bigger and built up the ild trail bed. Seperated rocks and mineral soil; using rocks to create rock cribbed drainage ditch. Used mineral soil to crown the trail bed. Final touch to renaturalize the areahttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...47a25c57b2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0117fd2a99.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...46f9a1c632.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d6ce9de1c2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...cd7c5c7767.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5127e8db6e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6ebb800f42.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...cc6a6a14a4.jpg
Dug out a nice drain for water to go which.then yielded mineral soil. Piled the soil storing it for use to crown the trailbed. Drained the mudhole. Restored old trail. Renaturalized drain.
Repeated on other mudholes. Dirt is all time right nowhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...234bfcbbc6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0b0f8194b6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a745b90e96.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2a57d200ef.jpg
Hmm leave it to me to not know this 6yr old thread exists.. shows how much I've been checking the board lately.
First one is my favorite pic from last summer, built by deer mostly, elk bear and random woodsy also helped I'm sure. Second is the joys of building a green sidewalk thru the San Juans, just gotta think of it as a 5mile long zen garden

Edit- fixed..I think
Some of these rangers/land managers need to pull the stix out of their asses. Since my heart attack at the end of December I've been hiking for rehab and where do you think I want to hike? Mt bike trail areas of course :) While I'm walking I clear derailleur hanger snappers, clear blocked drains and corners, move downed large branches or small trees and just generally do quick maintenance.
A few days ago I almost got a ticket for doing unauthorized trail work when I was spotted kicking sticks out of the way with my foot. The ranger was such a dick! Basic work keeping things clean and in good shape has always been encouraged, at least for the 30 years or so that I've been riding. WTF changed?
I've been hearing we don't do enough forest raking down here.
Spent the whole day working on our nearly finished "flow" trail Sunday.. We had a huge group, like 30 people, and got a lot done. Tonight we're going to try to run some plate compactors down it which should be interesting.
Reloaming your favourite holes.
Pic 1 - trail a bit worn after 6 years.
Pic 2 - hole filled in with loam.
Pic 3 - raked pine needles over the loam to make it look all purty.
Repeat on several sections https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...dd03b117b2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...77ea80084a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...735b0a401c.jpg
Man, this battery chainsaw makes my life so much easier. I used to cringe when seeing a new blowdown and now it's a piece of cake.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5b099f59b7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7eaed88cf4.jpg
I don't know how much it weighs. It's totally manageable in my old Lowe backpack while riding. I usually have extra Wesson oil in the pack also. If the battery is low I'll bring a smaller spare with me also.
It shaved this long one nicely.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3a0fba3d4d.jpg
Took advantage of much needed rain to clean up and resurrect some previously closed trailshttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7a4bdabd9e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...df0b07e4fe.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...61bd644f56.jpg
