Guess you are unaware that the road up to Hyalite Canyon Reservoir is regularlly plowed now and the skiing up there is damn good. Access isn't lift served UT slackcountry or Colorado road passes but it is not for ONLY the superhuman.

The regime in this area isn't 100% Continental, 8 out of 10 years it is probably more Continental than intermountain but there are stable years. That being said, if you pick your terrain wisely and have some backcountry savvy you aren't assured of dying in an avalanche. Plenty of people tour regularly here and live to a ripe old age.

Most years there will be PWLs that need to be watched and that is the price for skiing beyond the ski area ropes.

Can't deal, move to the coast and ski with cunts like Johnny C.

ps. Montana sees one tenth the backcountry traffic of the Tetons/Wasatch yet has just as many fatalities. Why? cuz the snowpack sucks.

Pretty sure its not the ACL, popped that off a couple of years ago on the other knee this definitely feels different. Majority of pain is on the inside of the knee at the bottom of the femur the anchor point for the top of the MCL. Now i need to go about getting an MRI to see if i did damage to ACL or PCL hopefully its just the MCL. Will check into both doctors, thanks for the recommendations.

Howdy folks, I made a trip to the East Rosebud drainage of the Beartooths with my friends Ty and CJ one week ago and we skied the Chamonix Couloir in pretty stellar conditions. Luckily the fog lifted enough so I could identify The Doublet rock feature, which marks the entrance to this hidden gem.

Hey all Southwest Montana Mags-

I'm headed to Big Sky tonight to stay with my buddy for a couple days, going to be doing mostly resort skiing, but still kind of broke and just recently got into touring (trekkers, cheap rigged skins) and if I could save a day ticket and go tour some low angle stuff (ya know check out the trees and stuff) I'd be super stoked. So if anyone has any reccomendations where I could go with relative safety (low angle/fun trees), I have no avi training or gear, or if someones around and wants to show me some stuff as well, all I really know is Beehive Basin is a heavily toured area.

Wouldn't recommend beehive with no backcountry experience or gear or really anywhere else for that matter.

The thing I find interesting is that they were not able access the bowl early because of "lingering mechanical difficulties with the tram" So, bad layer, gets loaded and by the time the patrol finally get to it, it is stuck there and they can't get it to move. It was not patrols fault and sorry for insinuating, it was clearly management not having the beer can running. Would they have been charged with incompetance had their been 20 fatalities? This is the largest in bounds avalanche during operation ever I beleive????

What's your point exactly? You originally were attempting to criticize Bunion, I believe, who does not even work for Big Sky. After initially criticizing the Big Sky Ski Patrol you backed off on that and instead started to attack Big Sky management? What exactly are you getting at?

Hey Johnny, thanks for posting that Link.

Scotty Savage is a good buddy and deserves more attention for his work in avalanche education.

I left Big Sky and moved over to MLB in 2001/02 so not sure what your point is (if you really ever had one).

However if you are trying to demonstrate how much Big Sky and Moonlight and the Y/C have on our plates when it comes to hazard mitigation you have succeeded.

All 3 areas do a damn good job dealing with complex terrain and a difficult snowpack.

Interesting read, cool to see such attention to detail. I trust the local Ski Patrol are doing their best and are very passionate about what they do, but...

They don't call it avalanche hazard "reduction" for nuthin. Who ever expected skiing at Big Sky/Moonlight/Bridger to be 100% "safe"? Lots of ways to die or get hurt badly are one wrong turn away. Large slides like the one in Liberty are unfortunate and maybe there is room for even more precise avalanche mitigation in the future but we're not there yet. It's an imperfect science, even with explosives, so you know the risks. Go skiing and bring back some stoke for those who are broke.

I had the same thought driving through there about 18 months ago. It would need to be a big snow year with a really stable snow pack. Maybe it could be done late season?

But no, I've never heard of anyone skiing it.
