Sounds like he prefers a smooth style of whiskey. If you want to get him a different one but in the same style category then maybe you should consider Blantons. It'll run a few bucks more than the Basil Haydens but it's mighty darned good and it'll be the style he likes. If you want to get out for a bit less cash then go for an Eagle Rare 10yr single barrel. They're on the smooth side of the spectrum since the grain bill includes some wheat as opposed to rye (with the exception of the 13yo rye). But the 13, 15, and 23 are bottled at higher proof than typical whiskeys so it helps to break them with a touch of cool water to temper their boozy burn. In retrospect that might be one of the reasons I like the 20yr so well. It drinks really well right straight up.
Cruiser, that Evan Williams single barrel your shop pulled is a nice choice! Super smooth and very drinkable!

I just enjoyed a wee dram of Makers Mark 46, tasty. Pretty dry and definitely more robust than their original offering. For $9 more its probably worth it. It was next to Eagle Rare for $1 more hadn't had either so next time it'll be ER. I asked the liquor monger at the counter about the Alaska Outlaw Whiskey, and her reply no shit was "well you can't go wrong with whiskey" if they didn't have the best selection in town I wouldn't go back... Ever.

picked up a bottle of evan williams single barrel as a gift for my roommate. looking forward to tasting it when she cracks it open. i was split between that and the 4 roses small batch, but the 4 roses was more expensive and im on a budget.
we just got a little barrel of something at the restaurant, but im not sure who the maker is. i might have to go in on monday and do a mini tasting. there's a couple of good bourbons on the list but im not sure which i liked more, the basil hayden's or the stranahans.
The wife, bless her, ran with my cocktail obsession of late and got me bottles of the following for Christmas to help round out the liquor cabinet:

Made Manhattans last night with 2 parts Rittenhouse Bonded, 1 part Carpano Anitca, orange bitters and a Luxardo cherry. Now that's living.
Not bourbon, but just bought a bottle of Rittenhouse 100 proof bottled in bond rye. $22 at K&L. Gonna make me a couple of old fashioneds tonight.

Opened late tonight. Over a couple of ice cubes. Initially, alcohol heat, which fades to a smoky, maple toned vanilla wood goodness. Not smooth like an aged bourbon. Has some herby undertones. Next time no ice, just a little splash of water.
Ha. Funny thing. Walked over to my landlord's last night to deliver the rent check, and, salt of the earth kinda guy he is, he whips out a bottle of Crown Royal, which his neighbor and I help to destroy with him. Not bad, not bad at all. Happy New Year!
FWIW, I find that Rittenhouse is better in cocktails than sipped straight. It's too hot and lean straight (for my taste), but those characteristics play perfectly in an old fashioned, manhattan, boulevardier, etc. If I'm sipping, it's probably bourbon (Basil Hayden's if I'm feeling flush, Buffalo Trace if not).Quote:
