I used to casually fuck a girl that was a total gun freak. Sessions usually started with some shooting (she had a big collection), then some drinking/bong hits(she was very safe with guns so always after), followed by crazy fucking. Guns are kinda cool.
Arlid, I have had an HK Tactical .45 for several years. Never jammed the first time. You had better have big hands as it has a double stack magazine and therefore a large grip. Great accurate shooter.
The Mark 23 is even larger. See if you can shoot one before purchasing.

Heh, me not having huge, but somewhat large hands, I suspect the mk23 would be too big - I actually looked at the USP compact tactical - hell, I´m not going to kill anyone before the next invasion(heee hee heee), so an eight round clip might be good anyways.
Getting the hunter´s permit in the fall, then go buy a good, affordable shotgun and start plucking grouse. The pistol deal will have to wait for a couple of years (a USP .45 is priced about USD 2000 with the currency exchange in mind).
And about the first thing in my last paragraph - A decent, not extremely expensive over/under 12ga suggestion?
Several come to mind. If you can find an old Winchester 101, those are nice (under $1,000 for a field grade). Browning Citori is nice, but pricey (Over $1,500 now). One of my favorites is an SKB 500 (made for Ithaca), which can be had for under $700 USD.Quote:

Look at what you shoot best for handguns. It doesn't matter what it is, how cool it looks or any amount of name recognition if you can't hit your target. I really don't like glocks or baretta's. I love my XD. Go to a range where you can rent a bunch of different models. Pick what suits you best.

For a first handgun (especially a defensive one), get a gun that takes a .22LR conversion kit.

This means you can practice for less.

And I know the guy in YetiMan's clip. He was shooting .50BMG at a 2" steel cube at 100 yards.
The 226s are good guns, decently reliable but blocky. The bore axis is high, so you get a lot of muzzle flip in a Sig. You might like a CZ-75. The Sig I had would start to fail to lock up after about 600 rounds of no cleaning, which is only a little over half of a good combat pistol class of 1000 rounds. New recoil springs didn't help. Not good. A Glock or a CZ in my experience will run for thousands of rounds without being lubed or cleaned. That's reliability.
Secondly, don't listen to the .45 vs. 9mm crap. Realize that all handguns suck at stopping people, and that the best caliber is one you can shoot accurately and quickly. Even a .357 mag, considered the premier manstopper, is severely outclassed by a rifle too weak to legally hunt deer with. John Browning's personal gun was a little .32ACP.

I whole heartedly agree with the caliber argument. Hell, the VT gunman had a .22 and a 9mm. It's not the round, but where the shots are placed.
