Oh thank God. This discussion again. Sprockets hasn't had a pointless argument in like 72 hours. I was getting anxious.
Anyways, context matters. People who refuse to yield on multi use trails are assholes. People who rigidly adhere to the "rules of the trail" are also assholes.
The answer, as always, is more directional trails.

I'm on my third Shimano 12 speed cassette in 12 months because they're made from Ritz crackers. I wish they sold these in 6 packs.
I don't really know those trails, but my impression is that they're trying to cram a whole lot of users into a modest number of trails without building that much more to accommodate the crowds. And it kinda sounds like they don't really have a history of building good trails, so people aren't excited about the prospect of building directional replacements for old favorites. Which makes sense - a lot of trails take years of erosion to become interesting - it's not easy to build worthwhile new tech trails if the soils / topography aren't all that conducive to it.Quote:

While I haven't ridden them yet, everybody seems to agree that the new downhill bike-only trails are very meh but worth it to not have to worry about running people over. The people bitching the most are the crusty old hikers who are complaining that the new multi-use trails, which have no downhill bike traffic, aren't good hiking trails. I absolutely agree that it's a substantial part of the solution, but it's not a panacea, especially when the cranky fun-hating upper crust types that populate the Ave's are involved.Quote:

And to be fair, the crusty old biker crowd (of which I'm a member) isn't much better. A good land manager should be reasonably adept at anticipating and deflecting these inevitable complaints.

Everyone was relived, I apologized for scaring her and yelling at her dog, she apologized for his poor training, and we each went on our way.

I was definitely annoyed but it ended very well. In general I don't like dogs getting all up in my face, friendly or not, but that was a perfect example of cohabitation on Shoreline that could have gone way poorly but turned out well cause nobody got too riled up over it.Quote:
