Lake Tahoe looking pretty lovely on Premiere of "Modern Family" on TV now.
Moving over to alpine meadows this weekend and I'm very excited to be a part of the hood.
Congratulations. And good luck.
We enjoyed our time there last seasonhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...cd40df21fe.jpg
Erm...yes back in jan/feb/mar ?
Ghost town in winter. Dumb.
////
Fack!
* Mammoth have groomed it up and is letting employees rip *
\\\\ Envy!
Alpine was a ghost town this winter? The parking lot would be full by 9:30, including the lots down the road.
I mean, sure, people aren't flocking to the end of chalet road, I guess.
No.
It is more that it made us sad that those condos are so underutilized in Winter.
We only met one guy who was living there full-time for skiing, but actually prefered SV.
He moved over from there to AM as it was too busy in summer.
And one dude who ran his electrician biz from there.
So 2 full time residents + us = ghost town, imho.
[emoji41] Just dont piss off the plow guy, right?
Just saw on a Kirkwood community FB page that 7800' is no more :(
S/E face of Basin Peak was mad busy today: me + 2 random snowboard chicas and their dog.
Snow was a weird combo of fresh leftover splotches and compacted slush/ice/hardpack from 16/17 season. Yet it was surprisingly edgeable. Windy and overcast, but otherwise pleasant.
Guessing the swatch will hold, so not a bad option for those hunting for October turns (though I think Carson Pass up near Round Top and East Bowl is still a better bet in terms of pitch and length of the runs. Basin is pretty mellow. Still, nice views of the area and a moderate hike make for good skiing).
Figure 8'd about a 1/4 of the patch and then skied all the way down the side hill. Shortest run: 7 turns; Longest run: 18 turns.

*Calling All Dentists*
SF showing of tgr movie, sponsored by charles schwab, $75 vip ticket, includes whiskey tasting...
I'm guessing there aint a chance in hell, but figured I'd post it up anyway...and it's not in the "Half a Pair" thread. A buddy lost a Spatula at Heavenly this winter - anyone find it? He says:
"I lost a Volant Spatula with Marker red and white bindings. I was about 800ft down from the gate behind Tamarack Lodge. I lost the ski in a concavity feature. it was lost January 21st. Pin drop: https://goo.gl/maps/HFJYXf6DJ972 "
He guessed it was on "Raley's Ravine or Firebreak" but he doesn't really know the names.
Anyway, it's a damn Spatula, so figured it was worth a shot! He went looking for it this weekend to no avail.
I'll ask my bro that patrols there.
Party of 5-sized crew on the frontside of "The Nipple" apres noon today. Overcast and chilly, with a light snow falling from the sky. Snow was bruschetta-style: crusty and soft, edgeable here, not so much there, freezing up as the day got colder.

That count as skiing on new snow? :P
Side note, anyone skied or been near Mt. Lassen recently? I remember looking at the cam a few weeks back and it still had a ton of snow.
Yeah trying to decide which direction I want to drive 3 hours this weekend :P...there seems to be a post that disappeared before this one
CalTrans apparently installing GazEx exploders on the Spur. So that's cool. Surprised they haven't done it already, but better late than never.
Not sure.
The Forest Service Schedule of Proposed Actions says, "Caltrans proposes to install three new GazEx exploders at Carson Spur. State Route 88 is a major trans-Sierra transportation corridor. The work is needed to keep the highway open during the winter months and to provide for public safety." Then it says, "The project is located along State Route 88 adjacent (south) to the Carson Spur, between milepost 69.8 and 70.6."
This study mentions Chutes 10-12: http://www.dot.ca.gov/newtech/resear...estigation.pdf (See Appendix J-7 and J-8, or word search) But then it seems to indicate there are some up there already? I didn't think there were, but rather just on Carson Pass and Echo Summit. I'm sure somebody can correct me on that.
Either way, whether additional exploders or first ones on the Spur, should be helpful in terms of safer and quicker road openings.
I seem to recollect seeing a gazex rig on the ridge line a few summers ago ....... but I may have been hallucinating.
Figured I'd drop this here: I and another TGRer are trying to pull together a ski lease in Meyers or somewhere in that neighborhood. We're looking for another couple of people to keep the cost down a bit. Hit me up if you're interested.
Good news about the gazex on 88!
I haven't counted thoroughly but they have had at least tree gazex on the spur for a year or two now. The more the merrier though. And now commence the talk of a tunnel/ tram from silver lake.
Sent from my HTC One M9 using TGR Forums mobile app
Commencing ... now!
Who does Vail need to petition to get a snow shed like Trans Canada highway ... friggin McClintock??? Additional Gazex is nice, but that doesn't change the fact that safely plowing all that debris is time consuming and costly. There has got to be a 20-year ROI for a freaking snow shed on the Spur!
Whatever though, I won't be sitting in that Silver Lake lineup on Saturday mornings anymore.
Looks like squaw/alpine heard all the grumbling and invested in some new avalanche prevention equipment. They got a helicopter, avalanche guns, and fixed avalanche triggers according to their website.
There's been Gasex up on the Spur for YEARS...I know because I may have explored all the Spur skiing options ;)
WTF is Hideout Lodge?? https://snowbrains.com/lake-tahoes-h...e-location-to/
Luxury backcountry ski lodge (:nonono2: :nonono2:) near Kirkwood with heli trips all the way to the Buttes? (fo real??)
Just a short drive from Los Angeles apparently.
And I hear there is a shuttle you can take.
The Hideout is the raddest spot for a wedding I've been to in the Tahoe area. It's just a click or two west of Silver Lake, not far from the old Iron Mountain. There are probably a bunch more fotos of the lodge and area on their summer wedding focused website.

It looks like they are trying to make some money of the spot in the winter as well. The Buttes must be their name for the mountains right around the place. I've only been there in summer but I think there's some mini golf right around the lodge and longer lines no far away. Not sure it's heli worthy but it would be fun to tour or sled in that area with good conditions. There's not many bc huts around here, so it's cool someone is offering a new option, and it's got a damn saloon.
