I've never seen KW anything but dry. So, how are they doing tickets there for the MTB these days? Can you still ride for free if you are not using the lift serve? Do they scan or have paper tix? And try riding Dangberg Trail from the top o Dangberg. It was killer last summer. By far the best trail on the hill. Pretty much all cross country until you pass under 6, but fun and tacky through te old growth.
Take Danberg to the Sentinel trail and that up to the Thunder Mountain trail then head down to Horse Canyon, it's one Bitch'n trail, you can then loop back up to Thunder Mountain & down Sentinel. I ridden the Kirkwood trails a few times but never when the lifts were running.

I Mtn. bike on occasion and I've never understood the appeal of ascending or descending rocky trails. To me it's exactly the same as snowboarding down icy moguls or breakable crust. As far as technial uphills that's the same as going up a booted out, icy skin track...just don't get it. There's 0 fun factor in my eyes.
And why do a lot of mountain bikers I come across act douchy and/or condescending compared to the opposite reaction I get from backcountry skiers???
Did I see you out there TahoeBC? I was on my moto going down Horse Canyon. It's a great trail both directions on a moto. For reference I do it in about 50 mins round trip...wish it were longer!
Trails are in all time condition right now, for pedals or premix. The Meyers festival has great timing this year.

I like mtb trails with some variety - technical rock sections can be challenging and rewarding. If everything was smooth and flowy it would still be fun but it would get kind of boring eventually. I'd compare it to skiing on groomers vs. off piste.Quote:

I get it you guys. I know the Donner Summit terrain very well. I used to be the FS trail crew leader out of Truckee. PCT always a bone of contention. Should be open to bikes but it's not.
I was curious about other mtb options towards Tahoe or even Markleeville. Working 9 hour days so KW trails most likely, but I'm open to other options.

It's hard to recommend a trail since you say your not that good of a rider as most of the stuff in the area you are talking about is really more advanced riding and sometimes if you want to make an interesting loop you need to be willing to stretch the rules a bit.
You might try just poking around in the Schneider camp area, you can roll up the fire road, there are single tracks off of it but they can be on the tough side to climb and loops are for the more hardy.
This would probably be a good loop for you:
You can start down in the hope valley area, check out a map, there is a fireroad you can take up to Scotts lake, drop the Scotts lake trail down to Big Meadows, cross 89 and start to climb the TRT towards toads for a couple miles at the first right take that down to grass lake, burn a couple miles of pavement to the top of Luther where you park for the true Waterhouse skin just before the Luther summit sign, go through the big rocks and take the old 89 down a couple 100 yards watching carefully for a trail on the right (not on any maps), this will take you back to the fireroad you climbed up to Scotts to close the loop.
