I paced 48 miles at Leadville back in 94 and didn't care for it much. Going up and over Hope Pass was tits, but a lot of the remainder of the course hurled, IMHO.
Sugarloaf...those buzzing powerlines...at 10,000 ft....in the dark...!!!! Pinchaloaf would be a better name.
I'd come back out to pace you or another Maggot/friend, however.

I hung out at Twin Lakes during the day and I saw the winner, Anton Krupicka-16:11, go through the aid station, he was freakin flying, he shaved 45 minutes off of his time last year! The 2nd place runner was a couple hours behind.
I'll keep you in mind if I am looking for pacer....

I've never been much for trail running, but did 6 miles above Durango last Friday.
Just as I was finishing the run, coming up the road to get back to the house I was staying at, I came nearly face to face with a black bear. A friend had come across one earlier that day as well.
I want to do more trails, but that shit, not to mention the mountain lions, scares me to death.
Got coach clearance for the VT50-miler Sept '08. So it's on!

At about 28 miles you come out onto Reeves Rd., where the 50K route hooks back in. Be aware that the great majority of the trails on the course are quite ride able / run able with little in the way of rocks or roots. Almost all are part of the Green Mountain Horse Association trail network and are well maintained.
Another brief road segment is followed by a weaving route through the woods and meadow around Blood Hill, some steeps near the 100 finish area and a climb over a 1,600' attention getter. In the last 11 miles the only road pieces you'll be seeing will be one, then a half and then a quarter mile long, respectively.
You can pick up a pacer at Goodman's (mile 42) but they have to ride on the shuttle to get there. The rest of the way is all trail, which gets progressively tougher, entering on the cross country network at mile 46 and from the last aid station at 47.3, you're criss crossing the lower Alpine slopes on mostly grassy trails.
It's worth all the effort you've expended when you can finally look down at the finish line by the base lodge and pound/pedal your way down a quarter mile of blessed downhill. For those familiar with the Vermont 100 course, the 50 Mile is basically superimposed on the last third of it and actually shares less than 10 miles of it. Almost 60% of the 50 Mile is on trails or jeep roads. It's a challenging course, with good footing/traction, plenty of hills and classic Vermont scenery that will knock your socks off.
For the statistically-inclined, there is about 8,900' of vertical in the 50 Mile.

Friday I ran my local trail and finished a loop in 39 minutes. I wasn't completely spent, but I also didn't feel great either.
I thought about trying a different approach yesterday. I decided to run 3 minutes and walk 1. I did this and ended up finishing in 40 minutes, but felt much better and did a second loop. Although a little slower at 44 minutes for the second loop, i felt i could do a 3rd.
Anybody follow a similar approach for longer runs?

i think the run/walk way is valid depending on your goals. a lot of people have used this training technique to finish races doing minimal mileage in training.
for me, i prefer to run all my runs... even if the long runs end up being at a relatively slow pace (such as my long trail runs). i have a half marathon coming up in october(moab) and imo running during all my training will give me the best chance at finishing at my goal time (1:35).
there's many ways to finish the distance. i'd pick what works best for you and your goals. if you are struggling with the long runs, you could try run/walking or try slowing down since for many the long runs are just time on your feet building up endurance.
I don't think so. I did a 50K trail "run" today and run/walking works for me. I walk/power hike climbs, it is more efficient for me than trying to run up hills. Other than the 6 miles of level trail(which was above 12,000') which I was able to run, I ran/walk the all of the climbing and descending. My knee and ankle were screwed up, so I ended up doing more walking at the end.Quote:

completed the pfalz point challenge in under two hours - 1:58:xx to be exact - much better than i thought i would. the ten-mile trail race through mohonk (the gunks) is 90% carriage roads, 10% singletrack, mostly non-technical. There is about 2000 feet of elevation gain and the same amount of loss. beautiful. It went by so quickly, I felt like I was in a 10K, not a 10-miler. I am loving trail running more and more, and this was my first trail race. Can't wait for the next one.

Just got a note that they're thinking of adding a 100K option to the Vermont 100 miler. Date is July 19th.
Got me intrigued - Thinking about doing that before a 50-miler next fall. Since it coincides with a 100-miler, there will probably be very late cut-offs.
There's plenty of time to train for it..

just wanted to post a TR and give everyone a head's up to those in the area that this is a phenomenal race. the people in charge put on a great race over a stunningly beautiful course.
sunday morning we all boarded the school buses at 6:30am to be driven to the start. the race starts about 30 miles up hwy 128 at the dewey bridge and follows the colorado river downstream to the sorrell river ranch. it was pretty cold in the morning with some fresh snow on the tallest mesas, but the burn barrels were great for staying warm til the race started.
the first part of the race stayed in the canyon and it was gently rolling downhill before the course moved a little bit away from the river. from mile 7 to 12 the course added some hills. for me, the first bit through the narrow canyon was the prettiest. i couldn't keep my eyes off the scenery (luckily they closed the road to all traffic so veering along the road didn't put your life in danger.)
one of the highlights was at mile 12 (at the top of the last hill before a downhill finish) was a group of drummers pounding on big drums. friggin awesome and almost impossible not to get a boost and speed up a bit.
i wanted to finish in 1:35 or less... missed that by 16 seconds but was pretty damn stoked.
i will definetely run this again (moab has a spring 1/2 that follows a different course) and highly recommend it. next time i will schedule more time to take in the sights in the area instead of making it such a quick trip.
came home from the desert to 6-8 inches at the condo. now it's time to get even more stoked to ski (wanted to hike up the mountain this morning before work... but the legs are screaming no... i know... PUSSY:biggrin: )
Way to get it done TW...reminds me a little bit of the Bizz Johnson...1:35 is a solid effort.

It's this freaking Sunday, and I've only been running once a week lately...but still playing soccer and riding my bikes a ton. i used to use body glide religiously and it worked pretty good, but the nip guards totally fix the problem. i think those of us who have lost a lot of weight often have a little bit of extra bounce/skin in that area... which causes even more abrasion than normal.
i ran a small 5k in my hometown on sunday morning. finished in 21:17 (8th). much better than the 25:38 i ran at the tunnels to towers race a few weeks ago (608th). i hope to break 20:00 in my next attempt - if i can only figure out how to stay sober the night before. why do these events always have to be on sunday mornings? i need my saturday nights!
