As this was his first visit and I was looking for exercise we hiked up the Ammo. I really enjoy this approach instead of being in the open plugging along the Choo Choo tracks.
Saw a couple very near the top who were in hikers and planning to buttslide down. I said "you could have stopped at Drummonds and rented micro spikes and poles" Reply was "We were in their lot and had an argument" :rolleyes2

One of two areas of less than 10' that were icy, coached him through using a set pole for a secure step. "Why didn't we put the crampons on?" "It was a small stretch of trail with no exposure so better to figure out a solution when you don't have aid"

Was pretty awesome popping out at LOC with no wind and mid twenties, Sol warmed the cool fingers quickly

After wandering over to Monroe and a peak of Oakes we skinned across the Lawn
Was an interesting mix of sastrugi, pillowy powder and close outs due to ice marble sheets and no ski cramps.

Time to cramp up and hike to the summit

The skiing was nice from Jacobs down, though I did get into some rocks, better than expected. Cog crowd eating marshmallows at Wambec didn't share anything other than diesel smell near the summit

Washed the car this afternoon in the driveway since it was 55 degrees F and sunny.

Skied this afternoon and had fun but dang that's a reset.
Still pretty good. Looking at maps for hiking tomorrow.

Hi all, I’d like to reach out and introduce myself. Re-located to Maine from North Idaho a few years ago and have been slowly coming around to New England Skiing. I now frequent Sugarloaf on the weekends and it’s been interesting learning how to ski on firmer snow, but this year I’ve begun to really enjoy it. One thing I’ve really missed from the Inland Northwest is the easy access to backcountry routes. I took my first trip over to the Osekare at Black Mountain of Maine last weekend and had a blast. Looking forward to more snowfall so I can explore the backcountry in Maine and Eastern NH. The weather lately has been rough to say the least. The little hill we have in town had to momentarily throw in the towel until the temps drop so they can get the guns fired up.

Really enjoyed the photos Vt Freeheel and VTskibum. Time with children skiing is some of the best time.

Dhiler17, the previous two winters have been very poor for bc in NE. Slides and stream beds are about the only natural below treeline there is. BMOM has the largest glade network in Maine. We have been adding to it every year, but it is somewhat low elevation and much of it has less than ideal orientation. There’s other spots around, but they are not shared on the internet. Vermont has the most snow and the most pruning in NE. Jacques Cartier and the Chic Chocs are the best spots in Quebec for a road trip. The weather on Mount Washington limits what can be done there. Andrew Drummond had some good YouTube videos to give an idea what’s possible. The number one rule is if there’s good snow don’t wait on it, because it rarely lasts

Thanks for the insight, where do you frequent on your days out? Is there a group of mags in the region that regularly ski at the loaf? I’m interested in making some more connections and finding additional ski partners for the days I’m out solo.

There are mags in Maine, but ticketchecker is the only one who frequents this thread. He works at Sugarloaf. Definitely more folks over in Vermont

There is a book about skiing the presidential range. But the cog and sherburne are obvious and I ski them solo.
I did get a Garmin inreach for that, especially midweek.
But ski around Sugarloaf, make friends, and I bet you will find your crew. They might share their spots.

You won't find touring like in Idaho, but there is fun to be had when conditions are right.

I post something if I am going to an area that is new to me and sometimes someone offers up to show me around and I have met several great people on this forum that way who have allowed me to tag along.

Easy to do when my ski relationship with the East Coast is on the rocks… I’ve decided to travel and see other people for a few years. She’s too fickle with her hot flashes these days, but we will still fool around at Saddleback or Da ‘Loaf when a storm comes to town.:wink: Its an open relationship.

I hear Swiss girls are nice and soft and cool.

Dhiler… sounds like you’re in Farmington. I’ll let you know when I head up to Western Maine to ski and would be happy to meet up for some turns. I mostly only come up from the Coast to cherry-pick storm ski days at Saddleback these past few seasons.

cat is too low key to say it, but he is your best resource for getting out in Maine and is a great ski partner.

Yes Mr singlecross there’s big game to hunt in Switzerland :fmicon: I have planned my Winter around leaving Maine and my cougar has now suggested three times we go out West for the Winter. Might be switching locations with Dhiler next Winter. N Idaho seems like a good location.
