That nav unit sucks ass for sure. That said, you'd be giving up some improvements made in the meantime by going with an earlier model.

Put Hella H1s and H4s in the FJ62 today. Holy improvement!
I was stressed about this when I bought my '00 with nav but I talked to my local shop who works on a ton of cruisers and they said don't worry about it, they've seen very few fail. I'm not sure if this helps or not but I have the screen on mine set to always off, hoping that will help it go the distance.
Just spent an hour reading that ignition thread. My truck was going into the shop later this week anyways, probably going to have them replace that as PM.

As a die hard 80 supporter, I did just add a 1972 40 to the quiver. It's site unseen so no pics yet but I did receive 30 years worth of maintenance records in a 3" folder and the title today from a coworkers husband. It's been in a garage that last 30 years and he's only put maybe 500 miles on it in the last 10. He hasn't started it in the last four years so I'm going to trailer it home and do a complete baseline on it. He couldn't remember total mileage, maybe 130k and the motor was rebuilt at a Toyota dealership when they changed the 3sp out to a newer 4sp. There's a stack of of faxes with Manafre and Specter part numbers but I can't pull the part #'s up online. The owner also doesn't know how to take pics with his flip phone. It's going to be like Christmas morning opening his garage door on Sunday.
I'm a little ashamed of what I paid for it so I won't say. I will say that the owner is a cool guy and told me he knows he could get 15-20 grand more for it but he doesn't need the money and he likes that I like Landcruisers. I also saw him get super wasted on red wine and fall down at one of our company Christmas parties and I never told his wife so maybe that's part of it.

Well, cosmetically it’s rougher than I had hoped. Mechanically, it’s pretty dialed. It has a busted spring which is a perfect reason to freshen up the suspension. It has bondo in a couple spots and little rust here and there. I’m actually glad because we can take it out in the woods and not worry about pinstripes and banging it up.
I think the old timer was really overvaluing what he had if he thought he could get $15k but I’m still happy with what I paid.
I did expect more for buggering him though.

Anyone have beta on rain leak issues in 80 series? Have a ‘96 that’s been bulletproof, is stored outside, and is now getting water that ends up in the front left passenger side well. And, because it’s parked on a hill, it seems to run down next to the front passenger door, then next to the rear passenger side door, and collect in a depression right by the inside plastic “step on me while your working on the roof rack” deal between the door and the middle seat.
It does not look like the sunroof leaks. Anyone every have a windshield seal just go? Its look solid. And it’s never leaked until a few days ago.

I don't know shit about cars buy my Touareg had a clogged sunroof plug. Drains out the passenger side front wheel well. Pour water in the sunroof channel and see if it drains.

Yes. I need to get my windshield seal done. Could be your problem. But check your sunroof drains too.
Another vote to check the sunroof drain. On my 100-series, I use a weedwacker string down the hole and very hot water.
Can of worms related to my 100, got it back with a 60k mile tundra engine (don’t know model year). It’s running great so far. Recommendations for fuel grade and motor oil? I see a lot of conflicting info on the mud forum with very little supporting data. Based on experience with older long use motors (subi 2.5 and 22re), I have experienced noticeable performance differences between higher end fuels and low end fuel brands. My understanding is that it’s all about the relative small amount of additives added to the fuel truck tanks. There’s no ethanol free gas where I live. driving is between 0 and 9k ft. Use is all over the place, from hauling overloaded utility trailer with gravel or green firewood, to pitting around town, to off-roading, to long highway distances, to frequent family ski missions.
For oil, the previous owner ran m1 synthetic on the old engine, changed every 5k miles. I did the same until the engine had it’s spark plug problem. If I ran dino oil in the “new” engine, I’d be changing every 3.5-4K miles.
A little late to the party, I think, but Toyota brought back the 3 door Prado (j150?), apparently as a barebones body on frame 4x4 2 row seats and a commercial version. Why can’t we get cool things?

Out Christmas tree hunting in jackattack and my 80s. Both highly overkill for the 3" of snow we were driving in but we made it up a hillclimb the Subaru's in the group couldn't so therefore Land Cruiser = superior.
I always chuckle when people say Subaru's can make it most places SUV's can. Sure fire way to know that person doesn't actually get off the beaten path much.

Not arguing but I had my wife offroading her 13 outback in spots most normal people wouldn't take their well equipped/better clearanced SUVs. We also had real trucks with recovery gear. Also I have an unhealthy obsession with a triple locked cruiser on 37s(like I need it with a 71 bronco on 38s).
I miss my 80 series. Hundred series just feels not as tough.

The hundred doesn't ride nearly as well on rough terrair due to the reduced travel of the ifs. It definitely is more comfortable and spacious.
The 80 also is built significantly more heavy dudty, stronger front axle, (front diff is weak on the hundie), redundant belts on front of engine, headier duty body with metal bumpers (plastic wings). Also the 80 used a heavier duty transmission. Early 4 spd 100 series used the same one, but 5 speed models got the tundra Tacoma transmission. 80 was just a burlier built vehicle with better off road capability. I have owned 3 80 series trucks and 2 100 series trucks.

The LC, while at various times, being the flagship for Toyota, rarely, if ever, had a ground-breaking, technologically advanced engine.
While I do agree that one is coming, that article seems rather click-baity and devoid of any real source.
