nice choices on graphic for those skis, Dane1
so those are 182 GPO, 187 Protest, 192 GPO, right?
Where did you mount the 187 Protests with respect to dimple?
Thanks for the feedback! Seems like a really cool ski that you could almost ski everyday.
My automatics engage very well on hardpack, they actually rip the shit out of groomers better than any 115ish ski I've been on, I think it's because they have a pretty generous amount of camber, and the sidecut is more 'abrupt' for lack of a better word; the transition between the regular sidecut and reverse sidecut in the tips and tails is quite sharp compared to the GPO.
The GPO has very low camber as well, which, with the less abrupt shape, makes me think it won't be nearly as good on the hardpack, but I'm hoping this means it's not as turny/hooky when charging down wide open untracked, which is my only gripe with the Auto's, and the reason I bought the GPOs
yes, sorted now, thanksQuote:
You mean cm?
I am skiing everything on tech bindings and AT boots. Each ski with different bindings and ramp angles. The 182 is the closest to a alpine set up for ramp angle. Ramp angle is the biggest part of my reasoning for different mount points. The other is just to be able to compare the 182 and the 192 boot placements on a GPO. A better explanation as to why is here bottom of the page:Quote:
I'd be interested to hear your thinking behind that.

I think I'm going for some GPOs, but unsure about the length.
Is the med/stiff too stiff? I'm 5'11", 166 lbs, and by no means a hard charger.
Any help?
Mid stiff is pretty *mid* and not very stiff by comarison to most skis I've hand flexed. I would never think any one would call it too stiff. Just right may be, but not too mid, and not too stiff. Sounds all weird and not like a serious answer...but it isn't and it is  My vote for your size and non charger would be a 182. YMMV of course....I am sure everyone's else will.
If you've not already done so, read this: http://www.praxisskis.com/pages/cons...omparison.html
It is well worth dropping Praxis an email asking for advice.
FWIW I'm pretty much your size, I went with the 187 carbon in med + . I have Praxis concepts in a medium flex, when I hand flexed them I was disappointed and thought they would be way to soft, but honestly never had an issue with speed limit or flap. This could be more to do with the overall design of the ski not sure, but its nice being able to really flex the ski at lower speeds, and still not worry about the ski folding in crud at high speed. Hence why I went with the medium+ in the GPO. Also I wanted the GPO for bigger spaces and more snow which is why went with the 187. There is still a ton tip and tail rocker so should be very easy to throw around. I admit though I'd be curious to try the 182 based on my experience with the shorter concept. Work it out with Keith, he'll set you up right.
Just got my carbon 187 GPO. 9.4 lbs Nice even flex and different feel than my 192 fiberglass. I noticed drew signed them on the core it looks like. Stoked to ski them soon.
Shipping my 192 GPO to another mag for part two of their journey
Just to add a little colour to the medium vs med stiff debate, when I first hand flexed my medium carbon Jibs I thought, "Oh oh, too soft" but they do not ski soft. They flex when you want them to (e.g. in bumps) but don't flap / chatter at all and hold a solid edge too. Quite how Keith has managed this is a mystery to me....I'm 5ft 10, 175 lbs, technically competent but not a charger.
still waitin for somebody to go 192/stiff and report back..
I would if I didn't have Billygoats, Kusalas and Wrenegades to test this year (and Dynastar Big Dumps if they don't fucking sell).
gf is in town, i cant freak her out like that! pending a pair 12/13 191 BG's dont fall in my lap come springtime im takin mounting the praxi stiffy.
I got a 192 med stiff+ for Stevens. Probably would have done stiff if I planned to be in Utah again. I should have them mounted up for a 305, if you fit I can let you take a couple runs
^ ive got clown feet, thanks for the offer though. i would think the opposite though- if i was more inland id have less need for a stiffy. im sure the med+ is gonna be a blast.
I have a pair of 187 carbon layups that will have an STH and radical pattern for 304. I'm in the Seattle area so would be happy to let someone take em for a spin. I'd like to try the 192...
I would love to get on the infamous BG for a run or two... It's all but officially on my hit list of next purchases.
Keith answered me really quickly. Looks like good service at Praxis.
I told him I like the Atomic Automatic, but with less tail rocker and a little bit stiffer, so he recommended me going for the 187 GPO, since the 186 atomics don't feel big to me.
Now I have to decide if I go carbon or full fiberglass.
Oh, and what a shame I missed the 20% discount for October :(. Hopefully some promotion will come up soon!
^ its peak sales time...if you left it this late, you'll end up paying top dollar, which in Praxis' case of product and service quality, is a bargain anyway. After a season them you will want another pair anyway and can take advantage of the mid season deals. No point saving $80 to not ride a ski for half season.
Plenty of carbon vs glass discussion or you in this thread.
I found at snowbird I was skiing chopped up snow the majority of the time and I'd rather ski a stiff ski in pow than a soft ski in chop.
Auvgeek- I should be around during that time and would be interested in a comparison. Let me know as that approaches.
Steveski- I saw your pm, I'm still out of the country but I'm working on figuring things out. And I probably can let you take a few runs on my skis as well, I have a pass at Stevens but may get a few days in elsewhere
Has anybody bought a stiff yet? I would have thought 188 fiberglass would be choice. Short and stiff or long and softer, both good picks
I received Whyturn's "old" pair in the mail yesterday. Props to WT for the deal, they are in amazing shape!
Also, another beautiful pair of skis from Keith and the crew!
So I now have three days on mine. Have to say I'm pretty thrilled with them (disclaimer: haven't skied a wide variety of gear, so "best you know is best you've skied" applies). Day one was corn harvest on the Muir snowfield, railed GS turns quite well with nice edge to edge performance for a 115mm under foot. Day two, laps on Green Valley at Crystal Mountain, 6-8" of good pow over old base. Great float, very stable when laying elevens. Felt a little hooky at times, but that was likely a combo of funky crust + knocking some rust off my legs. Suffered a core shot following my buddies out to the car over 3" of "base," temporarily PTEXed but will need a proper base weld. Day three at Stevens skiing 10" of mashed potatoes, had an absolute blast. Just killed it through cut up sections where my lighter stuff would've gotten thrown around. Even felt great on rain crust at lower elevation. Looking forward to more amazing days on them.
^ where did you mount Andy?
Mounted my 187s at -1.5 cm. Dynafit Vert STs with the toe shimmed 9mm. 5'10" 165lbs.
I will be mounting my 187s with the toe shimmed for radicals as well. I'm a little unsure as to where to mount. Initially I was planning to mount -1 with inserts for radicals and +1 for STH.
After weighing options of plates, inserts, etc. I am planning to use a custom toe plate as a shim for radicals that mounts to the ski with an STH pattern. This allows me to insert the STH pattern and the radical heel only. I will need to offset the radical heel slightly from the STH heel. My thoughts are to offset the radical slightly behind the STH. Not sure where I should mount the inserts. On the line? +1? As a reference I have Viciks mounted at +2 and like the centered stance for inbounds but have not toured on them much.
Thoughts anyone?
^^Why not use FKS to avoid any hole interference in the heel?
Two reasons probably: 1) picked up the pair of 14 drivers off SAC for a steal. 2) an engineering friend of mine has offered the toe plate and he's an STH guy so his custom plate designs are for that pattern.
Also with the wide variety and availability of the solly binding family it seems like a good idea.
Special edition GPO, get them while they last.
Those are cool basis.
