Living in MI currently but went home to visit the parents over Christmas and picked up a few bottles. First was a bottle of town branch. Was pretty good but nothing to write home about. Got a Jefferson's small batch 8 yr and that was pretty good. Just opened an Evan Williams 10 yr single barrel and that was pretty good as well. Grabbed an eagle rare 10 yr cause that's my go to sub $30 bottle. Stopped by the bar I used to work at and had an Eliaja Craig 14 year and that was one of the smoothest bourbons I've had. Just getting into bourbons more than what you typically see at the bar.
I don't think Elijah Craig makes a 14 year. Just a 12 and an 18.
Ate at a buddy's restaurant in Asheville (The Market Place, I highly recommend it). He poured me a glass of Bulleit they infuse with bacon, in-house. It's really subtle, and really good. It's never obvious you're tasting bacon, there's just a smokiness on the nose, a slight saltiness at the start, and a smoothness at the finish.
Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond is a great bourbon, under 20$ a bottle. Not sure if its readily available outside of Kentucky, but keep an eye out. Jim Beam product.
I used to drink the old granddad 114 decent stuff for a good price. And that was on Kodiak.

Pretty much anything from Leopold Brothers. Great whiskey, great gin, a really cool take on Fernet Branca, excellent versions of maraschino and coffee liquors... you can't really go wrong, and it's all distilled in Denver. Except the NY Apple Whiskey, that's a little fruity for my taste.Quote:

@moby: See if you can track down one of the older Willett bourbons. They make some pretty highly regarded stuff but the production is very small so it can be very difficult to find.
I like the Willett stuff I've had.
Look out for the Rock Hill Farms stuff too.

Heaven Hill distributes a bourbon that's 'Bottled in Bond'--white bottle green lettering. It's a cheap 10$ bottle, but quite good and only available in KY. Keep an eye out. Really smooth for 100 proof. Good sipping, and great for mixed drinks because of its cost.

Heaven Hill is good stuff. I think had that when I was living in, WA. Have not seen it around here, and forgot about that one.
just found out we have pappy van winkle at the restaurant. it was late after a shift so i cant remember which bottle i saw, but i might have to go on a day off and have a glass of that. we have michters us1 bourbon and rye, both of which are pretty tasty as well.
Yeah, the Apple was waaaaay too fruity. I didn't know about their liqueurs; I'll have to check those out. Their gin is one of my two favorites. Unbelievably good.Quote:

Old Weller Antique/Old Weller 12 are another solid wheater if you like Bernheim's. Probably cheaper too.
Bought another 2 Four Roses limited editions to go with the other two I found. Rotate between it some Van Winkle 12, Elijah Craig 12, Elmer T Lee, the previous mentioned OWA, and Rittenhouse Rye currently. All quality hooch. Passed up some Handy the other day along with a Willett 21 year old. Next purchase will probably be some 2003 Evan Williams Single Barrel.
Had some Bulleit Rye Friday night. Quite tasty. A little later I had something else but can't remember what it was. Doesn't really matter though 'cause it wasn't near as good.

Maker's is going to drop the proof on their product by 6 points (3% ABV). They say that it won't affect the taste, but that seems pretty much impossible to me. The alcohol is part of the flavor, so I'd expect that changing it will result in a different profile...

Had some Bulleit 10 Year the other day in SF, it's no PVW, but damn good. Now I've just got to find a place I can buy it.
Got some Rock Hill Farm SB and Sherry's Berries for V day. My wife rocks. The RHF tastes like Buffalo Trace on steroids, but in a good way. Not in the aggro back acne way.
Bought Breckenridge Bourbon last week and I really like it. Seems to have a stronger kick than what I'm used to, but has a delicious finish.
OK I just had col eh Taylor. Not bad stuff. What else would be good on that price range? Cruiser?
