Amen to attending classes, taking notes, and studying. It’s pretty obvious what you need to do if you want good grades.
My first attempt at college when I was 18 fresh out of high school didn’t go so well. I did OK the first year, but then the 60s hit me pretty hard. Lots of all those things you read about going on in the 60s, and studying took lower priority.
Then I won the draft lottery, so there was no reason to stay in school just to avoid being sent to Vietnam, So I dropped out of school, traveled around the country, and worked blue collar jobs for awhile.
When I went back and gave it another shot at age 25, it was a breeze. I just treated it like a job and got er done.
One thing that helped was taking a course in speed reading. Didn’t help me all that much with science and engineering textbooks, but helped quite a bit with all the reading for liberal arts courses. I was taken back by all the books they want you to read for those courses.
