Helena got down to -35 two nights ago, just 2 degrees from the record. It was -19 when my daughter and I pulled into the parking lot at Great Divide this morning. Cold turns.

This truck? No, I was told don't bother modern trucks with syn oil don't need them. :fmicon:
Last 2, yes and was glad I had them. Didn't have to start the truck the past 2 days so didn't matter. Amazing how warm 0 feels. We are now hardened for winter.
YM you are hard core.
Power out since 2pm. Getting down to 10F tonight. Gas logs and a little Genny with 3 20 pounders. Running it a couple hours at a time.
Gonna be dripping the faucets and curling up in sleeping bags tonight.
Duke Energy says 11pm tomorrow night estimated restore
Dang. Best of luck.

it's nething for it to be super cold out - it's another thing to go ski in it! I've been sequestered indoors for a week now.
half the community lost power last night while colder than -40 out. Gotta give props to the people that go out to fix the lines in those temps.
Temp is still dropping but I'm at a 46° drop in a little less than 14 hours. The rain turned to slush for the last half hour before it shut off and it crept into the car doors and froze them shut. I just went out and finessed them open before it became a bigger problem.
Gas valve in our 15 year old boiler bit the dust. Closest i could find the gas valve with parts to convert to LP was overnight from Ohio at $900. Similar weather here as gravity lover so overnight likely means Tuesday with the holiday. Going to install a new boiler this week instead with tankless on demand water heater too.
This morning I started Wimhof showers ;). Good fun? Nope fing miserable.
Thank goodness for our fireplace. The thing is incredible. Heats the entire house to nudist temps except for the basement. Interested to see how it fares tonight with outside temps in the single digits.

Eek that sux! It's always at the worst time. Our furnace blew a hole in the burn chamber on a storm day back in 05. I got lucky and knew someone and he came with a new one and a crew at 10pm that night to replace it. When they were done at 1am he looked at me and said cash, no checks or cards. Who the fuck keeps $1500 in cash at home? His guys started taking it apart right then and I had to call the cops because it was 14° and snowing and we had 6 year old twins sleeping upstairs. What a mess that was...
It's down to 2° now making it a 53° drop since 6am. Thankfully there's almost no wind.
Lol, pretty sure that’s actually Atlanta behind the snowman there from 2014.
It’s currently 7° here, which is pretty fuckin cold!

Update... Power still out in our neighborhood but there are trucks out dealing with the issue around the corner.
Pro tip.. If it's 9 degrees outside and pulling the start rope 324902734 times in 30 minutes won't crank up your generator, bring it inside for an hour to thaw out. Took it back out and it fired up on the third pull.
4000 wat generator will run crock pot, 5G home Wifi Router, bunch if little USP driven things and a 65" TV. Glad I added a nice outdoor antenna this year. Wife's hair dryer sent it in to a short fit last night though. She had no idea that would probably be a little too much with everything else running.
As standard equip my 2019 Taco came with the " Narthern package " so the block heater has a dedicated plug with a spring loaded cover mounted on the bumper with a special cord, I don't think its a standard package down in southern BC
I don't use the block heater til it gets to the -30's at which point I can just forgo driving
Most late model vehicles with a block heater have temp sensors that won’t kick the heater on until a certain temp is reached. I think our 1/2ton Chevy heater is set around -25C. It’s the old style traditional type plug. The newer vehicles in the work fleet have the new 3-prong insert on the bumper and come with the special cord. Betcha that special cord is 3X the cost of a standard ext cord, and not available at the local auto or hardware store - so don’t lose it, or worse drive away with it still attached!
I dragged the snow blower out and checked it out so it was ready to go a couple months ago, but some how the choke is frozen on full choke, gotta get out there with the heat gun after breakfast and thaw it out
or get shoveling
