Left side of Lenin was sweet and and then I took my son down the Gullies for the first time. Crons probably had the best turns of the day. Great day on Lone Peak finished with some apre at Scissorbills :smile:

Saturday was a great day, as noted. It also provided some redemption after getting high centered out in the nether regions of Dakota/Wyoming bowl and losing my Suunto watch. Marx & Lenin were quite good; with Marx more so. Dictators were also really good. Nothing quite like Tram laps on a blue bird day, none on the Southern Exposure and soft snow.

Was that yer skin track i saw today going straight up the middle through a slide path to a terrain trap that's buried people before? Hate talking shit online, but was surprised to see an up track there. My apologies if it wasn't you. That's just the only "high-use" bc area around BS, want us all staying safe.

Was fun up there though, huh? Thanks for leavin the main shot skier's left open so I could ski it!

Negative. I wasn't in the BC on Saturday, as I noted in my post. I posted the pictures from my maggot lurker friends that were in Beehive. I can say that they aren't stupid enough to skin up a high slide prone area. Those guys are pretty cautious, sticking mostly to low angle stuff.

I found a nice pair of Hestras on the Blackmore trail today just before the first stream crossing if anyone would like to claim them pm the details.

The Fine Print:
First, form a team of like-minded, conniving friends or co-workers. Then build a dummy on skis or a snowboard. A couple things to remember: there will be children at the event- keep it reasonably clean, and it should resemble an organic life form. The dummies need to be delivered to the Summit Hotel Clock Tower by noon o’clock on February 11th. The dummies will be on display until 1 pm, when we start hauling them up the hill. The launching will start around 2:30. We will be launching dummies off a kicker on Ambush again, to the viewing delight of judges and guests.

Rules:
Leave No Trace- Only weight your dummy with things that can be packed back out of here. Remember we have to clean this up and nobody wants to ride through gravel or dirt. So don't use concrete or sand - try water or get creative instead. Please limit buckets of paints and other materials that can stain the snow and make it melt faster.

Hints from year’s past:
Balance, balance, balance (2 skis, not one)
The heavier the better, while still being manageable by a couple of people
The crowd likes a theme
It can SELF-destruct; it doesn’t need your help (i.e. No pyrotechnics)
No Paint, or anything that will stain the snow, please, we still have a lot of season left and we don’t need brown or red snow for the rest of it.

Judging Categories:
Amplitude
Creativity
Structure
Destruction on Impact
Non-organic life form category (in case you can’t make it human)

Awards for these categories will be given out at Whiskey Jack's after a short period of deliberation after the last dummy flies.

Pretty cool little video that Big Sky put together this weekend/early this week. Anyone have any idea where this was shot from? I drove around Beehive Basin/all the little real estate roads up there last weekend trying to find a spot with this view of Lone Peak and struck out.

No worries. And don't sweat it taking it online here. The more people know where to skin and where not to skin, the better. I, for one, can always use more direction the backcountry. One can never know too much.

Also, see you maggots at the Dummy Jump tomorrow. Should be a good time. The Clintons are playing afterwards. It might stand to be a good chance to get drunk in ski clothes, no?

Lomo maybe for the first shot, but that second shot overlooking the whole mountain you can see the Andesite complex off to the left there. Guess I'll have to explore some more this and next weekend.

north summit snowfield was delicious today

Big Sky has been skiing really well this year (I think my expectations of MT winters are finally coming back to reality after last winter...)

Anyone been down in the Tobacco Roots this year? I haven't heard any first hand reports and am starting to get curious...

Well last run through the trees between Mr. K and Crazy Horse got the better part of me today. Pretty sure i got a full tear on my right MCL (heard a nice big pop as i was tumbling.) So question is who is the man to see around here about knees? Thanks for the help

I just researched the shit out of this very question. It seems like every Doc in town has good stories and bad about them. I ended up seeing Diebert today, I'll let you know once the knife comes out and rahab starts (fingers crossed). Shit might have to have a SW MT gimp party soon, this shit is rediculous (and fucking boring!).

Bummer on the knees, dudes. Sure it's a full tear, 509? Instability too? I felt/heard a loud pop during a very hard tumble once that turned out to be merely a minor meniscus tear.

I have done many early season tours in the bridgers and many late season tours in the Tabaccos, but mid season I am too scared honestly. I have lost too many good friends in the past 5 years, and am sketched out by too many skiing partners to do it much anymore.

Back in WA, unless it was really cold for a long time, or really warm, it was always stable 3-5 days out of any storm cycle. It was warm enough to consolidate suspect layers, and cold enough to not have water percolation (although when it happened, the 15 foot crowns were pretty cool).

What are your thoughts?

If you heard a " pop " it might be your ACL. Very common to hear. If it's your MCL you should have pain on the medial side ofyour knee ( The inside side ). If walking on stairs feels funny then it's the ACL. Diebert did one of my knees and Cambell did the other. They are both good.

Pretty much. I was planning on getting into BC skiing this season; taking an Avi 1 course, buying a new setup, all the appropriate gear, etc. With the way this season's been, I've decided to postpone all of that until next winter. I'm thinking this is not the best season for a rookie like me to be fooling around out there. Staying inbounds 'til then.

I also wanted to buy a used sled, but this season's been so lousy, I can't even justify that! Tons of snowmobiles in my town, and sadly they've pretty much gone unused all winter, stuck in everyone's driveways.

There IS a huge upside, however (for me)! I've saved thousands of dollars this winter by not buying all that crap at once. I would've been broke had I been able to follow through with my previous plans.

If u have been around a bit you know that the mountains around Bozeman are a continental snowpack. Backcountry skiing anything more then meadows, or during very small windows of "stability" is a very risky proposition and you might die. so, well we all may die at some point, the risk of dying is much higher in this sort of snowpack then it would be in a less continental snowpack. 1+1=2 Luckily for search and rescue, approaches are long enough that very few people ski in the backcountry around Bozeman.
