It has been snowing in Leysin since last night 20h00.
Total accumulation as of 16h00 = 3cm.
I made a new category for this called, "over the ski."
Seemed only fair to categorize it considering the storm persisted all night and morning.

And, I did find 3 nice turns in a row, and one face shot.
Let me put it this way, Ripz and I were debating whether it was
over the ski or over the boot.
There is snow falling out there.
Most is it is falling around the Gstaad and Col du Pillon area.
Very nice.

Going there in a week, for 3 days only. And I haven't been there before. So I have three requests; (1) are there any decent guides who can show us places? (2) Are there any off-piste/touring guide books or on-line guides for the area? (3) Are there any close by areas that can be driven to within an hour, in case Engelberg is tracked out?
Tips are, as always, much appreciated!

Temp appx = 6C.
Currently there is alot of moisture out there.
At my place it is falling as a non-snow product.
Zermatt, Saas Fee, Murren, G3, Verbier, Cham, La Grave?, all seem to be colored nicely in radar image.
0C line is reported at 2000m, but I saw snow below that, maybe around 1800m.
(Anyone else with data, provide it. Where is the snowline where you are?)
What does this mean? Many things.
Here is my short list:
GET THE FUCK OUT THERE AND SKI THE HIGH RESORTS MAGGOTS!!!
The next day of clear sky is going to be brilliant, I think.
But, it will not last more than a day of two, depending on the sun.

well it wont get very cold and stay rather dry.
i guess i wont get more ski days this year. :(
if it is dumping somewhere right now the colder temperatures should preserve
it in high alpine areas.
maybe the pattern changes again next week and te cold air streaming down from the north will hit the alps.
but right now it looks more like it will go down to spain via the atlantic....
for what I have seen up to yesterday in verb and what I have just heard over the phone, anything over 2200-2400 should be OK for the next few days.... they'll prolly have a kickass time at the derby....
In short order: The situation from couple days ago.
After the sundays snow (20-40cm of wet powder on the refrozen crust) the avalanche conditions were worse than i have ever seen in Aosta area.
Lot of triggered avalanches that day...
Chamonix : Grandes Montes : Good, moguled base. Up on the N faces was good powder 5 days ago.On the sunny sides good spring skiing. Not much rocks.
Brevent : (Seemed to be ) A bit thinner cover, more soft.Relatively
good base.
Alagna : Blurp...Bring your climbing gear.
Valle d´Olen : Have to walk a bit to get to the middle (!) station.
Soft, bottomless mush.
Balma : Soft,bottomles mush, quite lot of rocks. Skiable upper parts
if colder weather saves the snow. Lot of releases to the ground.
Gressoney : PT.Jolanda : Half of the slopes closed.
Good mountainbiking conditions...
Salati : Relatively good base, not too many rocks.
Stolemberger and Straling Faces in good/exelent spring
snow conditions. Lot of wet snow avalanches that runs
to the ground on S,SW aspects.
Champoluc : Up high rather good base on W, NW,N, but dissappears with
speed. Lower down it isb beginning to be a mudwrestle.
Courmayer: A puddle of mud. Up high still some snow left.
LaThuile/La Rossier : (ruomour) La Rossier is supposedly having a 2m base
and is holding snow relatively well. La Thuile sports a bit
less but might be of a better orientation.
C´moon guys. There is sooooo much to ski there. Dont dig up your bikes yet!
You have good season for 2-3 months in a head of you...you just have to go higher and higher... :)
pissing rain in St Anton. Apparently it's snowing above 2000m. this is a depressing sight. never in my life have i seen snow melt so fast and so many large climax avalanches taking out pistes. guess i'll try skiing the alpine tommorow
The colors look good between Mt Blanc and Saas Fee. Not sure if freezing levels will be low enough to produce pow, but something should be fresh on the ground.
I am heading up to SuperStB early Thursday AM. It could be the last day of the season for me. If the pow/snow sucks then I will skip the ticket. As a backup ... I am bringing my skins for a climb up to the col/Hospice.

After 1 week of great Spring Skiing the collapse went into full gear on the 18th. :FIREdevil
:nonono2: On the 19th we arrived for a week skiing on the CH side of PDS. Really poor conditions after 11:30 AM
... on the 24th we gave up and abandoned our rental and went home. :cussing:
Weekend looks dire. Warming trend to continue.
As I said, tommorrow may be the season closer for me. Any takers?
LITT, I can't say how much I should apologize with you. When I got your SMS on sunday it was raining like :mad: . The only peak I could see with the byno was about 2500 (around bruson) and there was no new snow. So my SMS back to your was sort of :nonono2: The next monday morning my friend alberico literally kicked me off the bed (yeah i was yawnning because of the new legal hour) telling something about powder above 2500. He was :FIREdevil true. Went skinning toward rosablanche through the col de la chaux and was really a memorable day (I'll post some pic later or tomorrow). April in the past has produced some excellent days.
I recall 6 pow days a few years back.
And today is only 31 March.
As for today, the sky is clear, stars shining, moon beaming.
I know where I will be. I will be taking attendance up top before having lunch.

Today was cloudy all day.
Don't know how it happened, but clear pre-dawn skies covered up and sun never showed.
Therefore, whatever fell yesterday and last night is still there, and not beaten up by the sun.
Seems y'all have a 2nd chance at it, if you missed it today.
Me, I was all ready to go, but did not because without sun,
it is too cold to hang at high altitude eating lunch in shorts.
gotta bump this for the coming storm. the fat lady had NOT sung yet here.
temp in the -15C range, windchill taking to -30C, definitely not spring weather anymore. austria is looking especially good on the forecast maps right now but i definitely can't complain about the local outlook. i just tallied up 82cms accum on the 6 day forecast. if we get half that i'll be plenty happy. :cool:
When I see white, I will shout at you all.
For now, I see nothing, but that is in part to clouds.
Getting colder here for sure, and wet all day.
keeping fingers and toes crossed. if it still looks good tomorrow, i'll be heading for engelberg or kaprun for monday and tuesday. please please.
