Thoughts on wootest 2.0 as a Japan one ski quiver? 6', 155, so not sure I need all the protest float, and a wootest would be used a lot more here in sw co.
50/50 tour/lifts around yotei/rusutsu. Would be trying to drive with the lightest boot I can, as I usually use OG backlands, but they're falling apart. Don't want to go too much heavier/worse ROM.
Fun story time:
I had just listed my Sierra Nevada 182 GPO's for sale on FB marketplace in Seattle (Skied it a bunch, just couldn't get the 182 length to work for me, but that's a different story). A couple of Sierra Nevada employees showed up to buy my skis and apparently a pair was stolen from a display at Safeway here in town and they thought it may have been mine. I bought mine from a random dude in Whitefish, MT around the same time it was stolen. It's got two mounts, a bunch of topsheet chipping and had storage wax on it, so very unlikely these are the stolen ones.
The employees were chill and gave me a 6-pack. But they did mention that only two pairs were given to the brewery in WA state. So I'm curious how the previous owner came about them. Does anyone know of these special edition top sheets were available for purchase?
I would shoot Keith an email and ask him. ^^^^^
Pretty sure Keith had some in the sale section a few years ago. Ive seen them on ebay as well. Even a pair on kijiji(canada)last year

I’m 5’10 165lbs and while I like the FRS a lot,it is a lot of ski. It chargers hard and loves the fall line, but doesn’t have very good swing weight and really suffers in tight turns (as would be expected at 119mm). Another big perk is that it has lots of strength on landings - I’ve never gone OTB or worried much about backslaps after a huck while on these. For this future skinnier/mid-waisted ski I’m thinking I still want some of that “stompability”, but I’m willing to sacrifice some of that for something with lower weight and a little more playful.
Options:
- 187 Skinny GPO (106mm) - w/veneer #4 flex and enduro core - this was my initial thought of the right ski. I like the shape, the tapered tips will bring weight back more center to recover some of that swing weight, and the regular GPO is already pretty light. I read some mixed reviews from sf on this one however… sf did you ever get these skis dialed?
- 188 Skinny Quixote (108mm) - w/veneer #4 flex and enduro core - steveski was raving about this ski last March being a truly great ski at this width, however I think he had vinyl and #3 flex. So this is probably my front runner now…

roger that, yeah I think Keith also recommended going for a different ski than a skinny GPO as well, but your review seemed like it coulda been also related to bevel since there was a pretty large variance in moments of elation and moments of disappointment haha.Quote:

As someone who bought the MVP's recently, I've actually been debating picking up the FRS. I really like the MVP because (among other reasons) it feels hugely versatile. Tight wiggly turns through trees? Sure. Billgoat through rocks? Yup. But still entirely happy to arc big turns through chop. The ~108 waist rocker/camber/rocker is a pretty crowded category, but of the skis in that genre that I've been on, the MVP feels like it hits the sweet spot of "do everything well" better than most. So I've been thinking about getting the FRS as an inbounds pow ski - something that floats a bit more and is a little more pow oriented than the MVP, but can still crush through chop and not complain too much about the crust that's lurking under the pow.Quote:

I feel that. My first thought was to just go with MVPs because, well, it's the obvious choice. But I also want to try something a lil different.
Great point about the tip taper, but I also have a 98mm dynastar that I mostly use on those firmer days anyway

I own GPO & a current MVP, ther latter is a super versatile ski for anything soft or just playing, but obviously not a carving ski. the GPO crushes on deeper days.
If your considering a skinny GPO, look harder at the MVP, or even a Backcountry in your preferred flex.
I have been using the 180 BCs as my winter touring ski for the last 3 seasons and I use it inbounds a fair amount too. Love that ski and agree that the enduro core is more versatile than the UL core.
Never skied a skinny Q or skinny GPO, but as usual, I typically agree with what Toast has to say, my first thought is that I really do not think that GPO design lends itself to a fun -1 at all. And, yeah, the MVP is stellar and probably the best pick for this spot, but honestly I think a skinny Q would be fun as fuck! Like Nick says, no, probably not as versatile. Probably not going to fit in the quiver as well, maybe not going to get skied as often. On hard days you’ll probably want something more traditional, on big snow days you’ll probably want something bigger, but if you live somewhere the snow is usually at least soft, I think they could really be a fucking riot that might just get a ton of use. I just love the design, that inside edge is really solid, outside edge is super quick, the rocker profile is absolutely dialed (low and slow), and that multi radius sidecut really lets you cut whatever size arc you want, hell I even think they’re fun to ride switch. So yeah, from a well thought out, super versatile ski that I will definitely use a lot perspective, the MVP makes the most since for sure. From a, I really want to try something different that really might be fun as fuck perspective, hell yes I think the skinny Quixote would be a great experiment.
Couldn't have said it better myself. There's something about that ski that just works for all conditions and flavors of terrain. I don't think about which ski to bring out anymore since it's always the MVP unless there's 8+ in of fresh snow but they even do well in thatQuote:

I'm on the current mvp (108 waist, granite countertop looking topsheet) mounted on the line (-6 from center).
I'm happy with them there, although occasionally I feel like there's not quite enough tip in front of me. Interestingly, I mostly get that at slower speeds when the (relatively soft) tip hangs on something for a split second before the (much stiffer) underfoot area pushes through. At speed, I haven't had any issues. I also haven't felt like there's an excessive amount of tail behind me, which is something I get with some of the more progressively mounted skis.
I got the mvp's as a replacement for my whitedot dictators (107 waist, full reverse, stiff-ish). The mvp's are 95% as easy to smear around in tight spots and at lower speeds, which is awesome. Unsurprisingly, they're better on hardpack, and they're also easier at speed. They're not *quite* as good in pow, but they're still pretty decent. Only place where I really notice them to be worse than the whitedots is funky, crusty snow. The mvp's are OK in those conditions, but it's tough to beat a full reverse ski when the snow is weird.
Mine are the MVP 108 from last season which was tweaked from previous models and people seem to like them better. I have mine mounted at +1 which puts me at -5. I have like 60 days on them at this point and have been consistently happy with that mount location, but I also like slightly more forward mounted skis
Great thanks. I try to go as progressive as i can without tip dive. 2 skis i screwed up going back in mount were my rx and an on3p caylor. The rx recommended was -7? And the caylor was -6. Both were skiable at-1 extra but the tails disappeared a bit. I would liked to kept both and mounted at recommended, especially the caylors because im missing a ski like that in my line up. Im ok with a shorter tip length. Maybe the new rocker makes that work, like the caylor with the same recommended -6. The piste jib were great all mt ski so i always thought a wider one would suit me better

I have 192 Protests mounted at -0.5 mainly since that's where the existing holes lined up for my BSL. Other skis are 190 Bibby Pros mounted on the line (-6), 188 PB&J mounted on the line (-5), and 184 Ravens mounted at wherever the Hoji equation saysQuote:

The MVP 108 has very deep rocker lines so I've never had tip dive issues at +1. If you were accustomed to a very traditional ski with a -10 mount point it'd probably feel weird but it would also feel weird on the line. I do agree with toast that they're happier at speed in heavy/hookier type snow but so am I
It depends on the ski. The caylors wouldve been great at -6. Bg's are recommended -10 and im fine there but i would like them at -9. Gpo tip dived at recommended but i love ghem at -1. Protest ive heard various preferred mounts from +1 to -2. Most seem to have settled at -1.5 which is where i love them. We all have our preferences with praxis it seems and thats fine. I guess im just looking to compare toother skis in the praxis line up and where people like them compared to the mvp. That should give me a good idea where id like the mvp mounted. Ive loved most of my praxis skis but the mount points seem to be the thing that holds me back from buying them now. When i can mount them bang on the first time on a new pair its a good bet theyll be a fave. Hoping i can rationalize an mvp. Thats width and "do everything ski" is what im missing

Could always go the demo binder route and try some different spots but I also get not wanting to ride demo bindings
That could be a possibility. That DIY demo binding/slackcountry rig with the tech toe mounted in front always interested me. It would give them even more to the all mt ski ability but then ya demo binding and a tech toe out there waiting to rip you apartQuote:
