Been working in and around the Butte Fire the last couple of weeks. One garden untouched, on slightly singed and another completely toasted. Lots of ash all over the plants. Smoke was heavy for a while. I know smoke can affect wine grapes, what about bud?
The ash is fucking everywhere in a lot of this bud. Rinse it?
Going to be in SW Colorado for a couple weeks soon. Any suggestions for rec shops in Grand Junction, Montrose or Cortez? Primarily interested in picking up some pens. How well do the disposable pens keep? If I pick up a few, will they still be functional months later?

edit: I pimp Kush Gardens a bit bc they have a good value on flower. Other shops may have cheaper pen/concentrate prices but KG always has a few strains at $200/oz and several tiers of pricing with 500mg O-pen cart $10 discount days (think it's saturdays) that can make your buck go pretty far. Probably my favorite shop for reliable value. Others will have boutique strains like High Q in Silt, but not sure you're going that far. That's the place to snag your top tier bud for about $400/oz prices.. high but that's for well cured chronic with real distinct flavor profiles.

The tomato cages help with sliding them around. I water with a wand, and can get to all of them no problem.
I only water to about 10% runoff, and the saucers hold that much.

The 20gal pots have really cut the work load down, we are going 7 days in between watering, and feeding every other week. Saves us time, money and the plants seem much happier in the bigger pots. Not to mention they are like fucking trees :D I wouldn't be surprised if I got 80 ounces out of the 8 Blue Dream plants.

The glass table we were working on looked like a god damn ash tray by the end of the day. Finished product is ok but you can still find bits of ash in it. A lot of the Calaveras County stuff is going to be tainted with this crap.
We pulled a Deadhead plant that was ready (2/3s red hairs and cloudy mushroom resin is what this newb heard). I guess it could have gone longer but why risk mold for no improvement? It was also in a place where I wanted to plant garlic.
Also the huge grower guy next door harvested all of his greenhouse Bubba Kush and Apple Kush.

When I pot up a freshly rooted cut I let it have wet-dry cycles for a few days then I slowly up my watering, at the end of week one I'm watering once per day, I aim to be watering 3x per day by the end of week 2. Once the root system is developed it is very very hard to overwater, they will take all you can throw at 'em and ask for more.
I also think it's important to mention that coco doesn't require the same size of a pot compared to soil, I have grown plants at 9.25oz in a 6.5Ltr pot. Less is more, unless your looking trees, don't go over 6.5Ltrs, there really is no need plus if you have a pot that's too big you could run into overwatering problems and possibly root rot. I like to add hydroton at the base of my pots, this assists in drainage, I also add layer of hydroton at the top of the coco to help slow down evaporation. I'd highly advise you to do them 2 things. Stopping evaporation is very important, the process of evaporation removes water from the coco and leaves behind salts which will cause both PH and toxicity problems, macro and micro nutrients will get locked out with the excess salts in the coco. You want to keep coco WET so all excess salts are constantly being soaked and flushed out of the medium.
Once you water 3x per day your plants will start to grow super fast, FAT stalks, branching growing like crazy, it really is fun seeing the explosive growth rate. I feed 3 x per day right up until flower stretch is over then I bang up the waterings to 5x per day, just as the buds switch into swelling mode, the plants react great. You see, when you feed a plant you aren't just giving it fresh nutrients, you are also giving fresh oxygen to the roots, the nutrient solution saturates the medium and pushes out the stale O2, as the solution works its way down the medium it draws in fresh oxygen from the top, this is one of the reasons why I think multi feeding works so well with coco. Your giving your plants access to more fresh oxygen.

HGO's method creates lots of runoff that has to be managed (10% x5/day), but graviteh helps a lot...Ideally, you want all same cut in a dialed room, SOG, because even canopy and higher stem count wins the gram/watt/day. Nothing produces like Sea of Green, because 1. less veg time and, 2. more mainstems=more capacity for budliness.
Drippers are so simple I don't know why everyone doesn't. Pump nutes from reservoir into section of large diameter black tubing (2" is good for 1000w). This is your manifold, the thing that makes all the connected tubes flow equally. From the manifold, run 1/4" black tubing to pots. Put $22 pump on timer, follow HGO's irrigation scheme for his good reasons. Irrigate to 10% runoff. Most systems, this is about a minute or two. Then the little pump shuts off.
You don't need emitters. A layer of gro rocks on top of the coco spreads the nutes out.
Get it to where gravity collects the runoff, and the room can run unattended, which is nice when you have a life. It's also nice to spend your quality growroom time inspecting and tending your plants.
By about week 3-4 of flower, you want the nute timer to come on right before lights on, then another 4x in the next 10 hours, leaving the last two hours of lights-on to dry things out a bit before lights-off. This hyper-oxygenates the roots and gives better yields than running the same coco and nutes with a slower feeding schedule, because it makes it possible for a given mass of root to sustain more above-ground (bud) mass, and the entire plant grows faster. =Hydroyields, with hudge lush prehistoric fan leaves and big heavy prehistoric buds that have to be supported because the plant has big hollow superhighway stems...
Great thing about coco this way is it's WAY more forgiving than NFT, DWC, F&D, or any other 'straight hydro' that produces big hydro yields. You don't even need an EC meter to run the H3AD (but it's good to have in the beginning).
Never ran DWC that some fargin catastrophe didn't happen...pythium (root jelly) is the big fkn danger, that and messing up nute mixing even once...plants falling over too... Fucked up an entire run in a Waterfarm because my res was too small and the plants sucked so much water in one day that the nutes jacked to 3.5 EC...3 weeks of flushing didn't get the taste of that 1 day out...Goddamn.
But coco is as easy as soil because it buffers little irregularities. Run drippers on a timer, find a way better than a shop vac to collect runoff, and coco-dro to hyperyield for the same or less input of labor, and a little more nutes.
I used to run Water Farms. Pain in the ass.
The Under Current units look nice though. Coco is a mess.
Anyone have any input on the hemp depot for beans near ottawa,ca.? Anything particularly good? Looking to make a trip up but would like some feedback first.
Man you'd hate the Twister, but I think for an industrial scale garden it would be just the shit for that. It's just a big ass salad spinner on steroids with blades and a hudge vacuum collector.
We use it to process a lot of bud. We trim wet off the vine. When it's been chopped off the plant and is waiting to get an initial trim before it goes through the machine we keep it well watered with a soaker hose. It trims up better that way. The machine has a big vacuum attached to it so a lot of the water gets pulled out. The buds aren't wet when they come out. We put that shit on trays in bread racks in the drying room with a bunch of fans. Never seen any mold develop after that process.
I think for a big farm with a lot of ash it could help you out. I wasn't sure with the smaller hand trimmed product what we could do.
I can't say that the bud does not get beaten a bit more in the Twister, but it is certainly not a moldy mess. Look back at my pictures from last year.
