I love it when you do that.
The 4th isn't all just about fireworks for me. We have a family reunion every year at my cousin's place.
There's always lots of food.

And then, of course, the fireworks. Fellow down the beach a ways is a rep for TNT and always has tons of stuff.

^ Very nice. Although I'd keep a little sliver of ground at the bottom -- the bottom edge looks a bit...abrupt, with the golfer just floating without context.
^ I've been getting into back-lit shots as well. One thing to try: get the sun completely or partially obscured by something. With a partial block, you can use a small aperture to reduce the size of the sun/glare and get a more compact star burst effect. Or with a full block, you can use a large aperture to get a shallow DoF. In this shot, I placed the sun behind the helmet and shot at f/1.4. This shot was a f/1.8 with the sun blocked by the leaves. This one was at f/4.
A couple I didn't include in my Puerto Rico TR in the PR.

Holy crap man that came out great!! I'm not a huge bird photography person but that looks fantastic. I love the crisscrossing wires.
+1, you really outdid yourself with that shot.
I was bored earlier so I made my first bokeh template. It has been raining so I just did a test shot out my window. Need to get the process dialed in but I think I can make some pretty cool artsy photos once I get the process down and make some more interesting templates.

that was actually what i was going for. the shot was lined up with the timer and tripod and my head was covering the only light coming through. the other pics just weren't in a good part of the swing.Quote:

it was shot at 1/320, f/8, iso400
otoh, i bumped up the iso so i could shoot it at a faster shutter speed, but i should have bumped it from 400 to 800 (or more) so i could have closed the aperture to f/11 (or more, see i'm catching on).
my main concern at the time with the aperture was getting it high enough that i could be off a little bit with the focus since it was hard to see in that light (i was trying to focus on the ball and i wasn't standing in front of the sun).

the starburst thing is for me one of the most intuitive parts of all this, since i think most every kid has put their two thumbs and forefingers together and looked at a light or (god forbid) the sun, and then closed the gap getting that exact effect.
Splitter, are you HDRing any of these or did you just get great color? If yes, nice work not over doing the HDR effect.
Thanks Edgnar. They are all single exposures. The sunrise/alpen glow is a single 3 stop GND. The sunset/afternoon shots are 2 stacked GND's. The small DOF trail shot is a handheld GND.
Another example is the wife and dog without a GND

and the trail with the same sky, just after, with a handheld GND

Nice work! Really great color in those shots.

Had a short little window where I could get out tonight and get a bit of shooting done. Played around with my new Tokina. Not really thrilled with any of these but whatever, it's good practice.
