As of yesterday evening (7/11) off the Mt. Rose Hwy:
The first ridge of Tamarack is burnt, but "Hourglass" is still looking decent, as well as spots on Houghton.
The Chutes at Mt. Rose ski area are cooked, at least from the top (if one was so inclined, one could park at the entrance to the Slide side and dry-hike in and then boot up the bottom 1/3 of the likes of "Hornet's Nest", 'Beehive", and "Yellowjacket", though.
In the Castle Peak area (as of 7/10):
There's still some long swatches lurking on the West face (overlooking the Peter Grubb Hut basin), and there's still a few decent enough swatches on the SE face (overlooking 80 and Donner Lake). Got to imagine that there's still some skiable/rideable lines on the N facing aspect (Coon Canyon) and all the way to Basin Peak.
How's the slide path off of chickadee looking? Skied real well a few weeks ago, but haven't been up the pass in ~14 days.
still holding (drove past it today on my way home from banging out the avy chutes in the hairpin just down from the Mt. Rose TH parking lot).
you can clearly see somebody's tracks up there, too.
i keep thinking about hitting it before it gets cooked.
what is the approach like (mileage/timewise)?
There is a big snowfield that drops to Carr lake off bowman lake rd. Somebody should hit it. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2d2ce8a680.jpg
Yesterday (7.13.17) me'n Vets did a semi-massive late afternoon/dusk patrol ski fest out by "The Nipple". We hit some nice swatches above Lost Lakes, one above Blue Lakes, and then a back-to-the-car/truck shot just under the shade of "The Nipple". Snow was smoovy-smoove, with minimal sun-cups and a few runnels and wonky moguls in spots, but they just added character to the runs.

Buddy of mine said that he heard that Barker Pass Road is now open to the top.
In other news, Hourglass and Broken Glass off of Tamarack skied rather nicely this morning. Hit it up with Corky, Mrs. Corky, Corky Canine, and Thudder.

Broken Glass is skiable--in a manner of speaking--all the way down to the meadow and waterfall, though you will have to navigate a pretty substantial avalanche debris field...
Broken glass looks really nice still surprisingly, suncups don't look too bad at all. Did your friend mention seeing any snow left in the chutes up barker pass?
Lol
Looks like Andy has a new boss, FWIW

BTW--hiking the 5 lakes trail yesterday I saw 2 small solar contraptions--one roughly halfway up the trail on top of a weathered granite outcropping and the other high above the upper part of the trail on a grainite outcropping just below the KT-HW ridge. Any idea what they are. The first one is in the middle of nothing, wouldn't seem to have anything to do with the ski area, and the other, while close to the ski area is outside the boundary signs. I didn't see any obvious wires heading towards Troy's house and the solar panels are pretty small.
trail counters?
Self-powered weather stations? I've seen them around (e.g. south of the summit on Mt Lincoln).
I hit it today.
Gotta say that it must have melted a tad in the 6 days since you posted your picture.
It was interesting, to say the least.
Only about a 15-minute trek from the parking area to the snow.
The field is more of a strip now, with a double fall-line; a semi-flat top "ridge" and then uber short, slightly steep lines down toward the lake. It is also an enchanted forest of bent trees, which made the skiing less of skiing and more of an obstacle course (i'd make a turn, stop, side-step up a few feet, then make another turn and so on).
The snow was decent, though.
I managed to ski about 3/4 of the strip utilzing the semi-flat ridge line and managed to pinch out 11 turns.
I banged out a few lakeside fall-line runs and managed to squeeze 6 hops turns out of one of them (the standard length of these runs-- following the natural turning radius of my skis--was 3 turns).
Not exactly sure if it was worth the effort as it was akin to what one usually finds to ski in late September/early October on a "normal" snow year...but I was coming back from Napa, so it was on the way home and easy enough to get to late in the afternoon.
While out there, I scared a water fowl that was rusty brown and cream colored and had a head shaped like a loon. Also saw these two birds "fighting" one another in the air; they were black and white, kind of shaped like an albatross. Not sure what either of these two birds were as I'm rather weak on the bird chasing tip.

^^^awesome!!!! Sounds like it is melting fast!

Summer topic: Anyone know why there's almost always traffic on the I-80 corridor between Davis and Sacramento? There seem to be few on-ramps, no lanes lost (I don't think), and only agricultural land in the vicinity. It's maddening.
It's called the Yolo Causeway. Remember the eastbound merge west of Davis? And a second one after Mace? It drops from 5 to 3 lanes in a few miles. Westbound has two freeways feeding into one.
It's the "tendency for humans to pursue “selfish routing” strategies, at the cost of the larger network."

I get the same thing on my commute. Basically too many cars to handle humans selfish nature.
Time to put this thread to bed
Seems to me it's still 16/17 until the first snow of the new season starts to fly. Still plenty of good snow out there.
Me'n Vets skied some mostly south-facing, overlooking HWY 431, sweet 'n soft, sun-cupless strips (and one field) above and below the Relay Peak service road yesterday (7.19.17).
25-minute leisurely hike to snow from the Mt. Rose Summit TH parking lot.
Strips were 10+ turns long (following the natural radius of the ski and not forcing short radius turns). Ditto for the field. We also skied a multi-patch obstacle course because it was there (about 5 patches currently not connected, but which would have been a sweet and long run about a month ago).
A nice, solid, quick hit for those on a time crunch.
Get it while it's good, as it will probably start diminishing in the next few weeks.
FWIW, the slide path above Chickadee Ridge still goes (see picture #2 below).
Vets boot-packing out of the first legit strip

Thanks for keeping the stoke/reports going here, Dookey. May have to bring my daughters out that way for some turns (appreciate the hike time/strip length info!).
Here's some beta from Hawks Peak (looking toward Castle, etc) for anyone looking for patches. Seems to be some nice ones left if you're up for a hike.

* I have to say I like our blue-capped smoke better than that NV smoke above Chickadee. Either way, what a bummer!
An update from today, pic is taken around the same time/place as the one in my previous post, just a day later:

So much better out there today!
Also, a quick shot for Dookey's planning purposes:

Enjoy the weekend,

Just as a note, I flew east on Tuesday and the higher peaks all look plastered.
Hey Maggs!
b4 this thread expires, from summer heat, just like to put it out there that me & Cinders are moving up to Carson City, ne'Vada.
(Just got it Monday, we are sitting in the backyard now [emoji41] )
An all new way of life for us.
It has been a weird season & expecting more of the same.
And we have never skied Mt Rose! Cool eh?
Holla if you know our steeze ;)
Rode the Thunder Mountain/Horse Canyon loop near Kirkwood yesterday, took a couple beta shots of the Carson pass area, looks like maybe the left hand arm of the moon still goes with a long apron exit in case someone wants to check it out. Woods lake is open now for access also

Looks like the moon goes nearly to the top as well. Bet there is a fun gap between the snow and rock
^^thanks for the photo beta on Winnemucca Lake/Roundtop Lake area, TBC!
Wu-Tang Clan Patches are in full effect, as well, from your photographic recon.
Tasty Brew PSA for Reno and Tahoe Locals:
While not terribly skiing related, except that beer is super tasty apres a good summer schuss session, thought I would pass this along:
Modern Times "City of the Sun" IPA is currently on sale at both the Galena (Mt. Rose Hwy, South Reno) and Incline Raley's.
Granted, the stashes they have were canned back in November 2016, but this is still one of the best IPAs out there, imho.
Stock up whilst you can (pun intended, since they only come in cans!).
$10.49 for a 4-pack.
Hoppy and Juicy (the can says so).
Muy bueno.
A closer Look

I started to climb up it but the crevasses that have formed between the rock walls and the snow on both sides put it out of my comfort level, a slip and fall into one of them would not be pleasant. Memories of a story from a buddy with SAR who pulled a dead skier out of one of those a number of years ago that fell into one in the same location were being played back in my head. I downclimbed back out and skied from the entrance back to the lake, the wild flowers right now make the trip worthy, prolly head back to the sisters area next week.
Another look that shows the gaps between the rock and snow
