I've owned both. Fair disclosure, I am one of the few that didn't love the MVP and the Jeffery is maybe my favorite ski. For me, MVP was a better all mountain ski, did better on groomers, more locked in. Jeffery was more playful, more poppy, looser, better in chop, great in anything somewhat soft, very fun spring skiQuote:

I have been on my eternal hunt for my favorite in-bounds pow ski for Mammoth and occasional trips to Tahoe, Utah, and/or JH. My previous favorite ski is the old skool Atomic Atlas in the mini me 182cm version. I ski a bit old skool with a drive zee knees style, like traditional mounts, and damp smooth skis. Quiver includes Legend Pro 105's, Stockli Stormriders from 10ish years ago, the Atomic Atlas.
Other pow skis tried and found lacking, generally in float as I want the tip to float while still driving the ski and when it snows in Mammoth we measure in feet not inches. This includes Prior Overlord (close 2nd), Backland 117, ON3P Wren 114 (Don't like the construction, find them bouncy for my 160ibs, not damp, although great shape), Standard Praxis RX 184cm, 189cm Dynastar Menace 118
I had the standard RX last year and really liked it till about 8" of new, then the tip needed more float. Thought it was super smooth and liked the shape / construction.
Traded numerous emails with Keith about increasing the tip rocker, decreasing the tail rocker, and that I was going to mount it back. Finally got them out in their element over the last couple weeks and I'm ready to label them a total success! Ended up w/ tip rocker 80, tail 27 compared to standard 70 tip, 40 tail. Other difference is the rip rocker starts sooner rather than the long low rocker in the standard RX. Sorta a combo between Keith's FRD and RX w/ more rocker. I also mounted them 80ish from the tail which is quite a ways back from his standard mark.
The skis rip. The float, are stable, pivot quick in the trees, ski groomers back to the lift great. Pretty much perfect in the 3 or 4 days I have skied them thus far. They are super well made and look bomber. This is the most $$ I have ever spent on a pair of skis, but pretty stoked on them!

I have a few days on my standard 184 RX. I skied them in classic Mammoth windbuff conditions from Dec 19-Dec21.
They are about what I thought they would be, which is awesome. Solid and stable, easy to set an edge and can both rail a big turn and release from one. They are a bit more turny than my 186 EHPs, which is to be expected given the the EHP has a sidecut of 129-116-123, but they don't lock you into a turn and they initiate turns a bit better due to the added sidecut. I'm still figuring out the sidecut, but I think these skis are going to be great for what the EHPs have been for me, namely the ski I grab 80% of the time in Mammoth. These should be fine if I'm skiing Hangman's and it's edgable but a bit firm in spots, or if I'm skiing them on a pow day and the top of Philippe's has slid. One of the things I have always loved about the EHPs is that if I have to make a critical turn on a firm steep they are just fine. I tend to like pow skis that have that level of versatility, as opposed to something that is great in pow, but sketchy in a chute that has slid.
I have not gotten to ski them in pow yet, but I'm pretty sure they will be similar to the EHPs, but with a bit more float. The tip is a bit wider, and they have slightly more rocker. They won't be a completely floaty ski, but having skied the EHP for so many years on Mammoth pow days I'm not used to the ultra-rockered floaty tip anyway.
In buying this ski, I wanted a couple of things to be slightly different from the EHP, a ski I have been skiing since January 2008.
1) I wanted it to be slightly easier to initiate a turn, but not to lock me into a turn I don't want to make. I don't like round turning skis. Something like the EHP but with slightly more sidecut, with that sidecut concentrated between the waist and the shovel, as opposed to the waist and the tail.
The RX is exactly what I was hoping it would be in this regard. While I am still figuring out the sidecut, it initiates turns more easily, can be carved, but doesn't lock me into a turn. You can break off short, quick turns if you want, and you can make long turns. But the tail doesn't lock you into a carve when you don't want that.
2) I wanted a tiny bit more rocker in the tip, but not too much.
As I haven't skied pow yet on them, I can't comment on the pow performance yet. But I think they will be a bit better than the EHP, although similar, which is what I was looking for. These are not going to be a pow only ski, but they will have the float I am looking for. I think they will have the added tip float over the EHP that I'm seeking.
I wish I was in Mammoth right now! I would definitely get a chance to test them out in pow.
But overall I think this ski is exactly what I was looking for. It is stable, versatile and it will float.
As an aside, isn't it funny to talk about a ski like the 186 EHP, which has a 129-116-123 sidecut and tip rocker as not having enough float in pow? When I lived in Tahoe, 98-03, my last couple of years I skied a Volkl Explosiv almost every day. That sidecut was 120-95-112, and I thought the float in pow was insane!
It really is a great time to be a skier.
I have a pair of 184 RXs that Keith made for me last year that I never got around to mounting. I have a pair of Attack 14 mn's looking for a home. I need to get some brakes. I assume the 110 brakes will fit?

Really happy with them. I wanted a touring ski that'll I'll grab on most days that I expect things to be generally soft, but not so deep that I want to drag around something bigger and heavier. They're great in good snow and make breakable crust a lot less bad than it could be. If things are completely upside down or stupid deep and I'm skiing lower angle stuff for avy danger the extra float and looseness of my L138s is welcome but the skinny Protests are the right tool for more days. The decreased width does make them easier to manage than full width Protests on the odd firm spot but that's definitely not what they're for.Quote:

185 cm. Standard flex is fine. Flexible on model year. Will mount Salomon so prefer those holes. 317 BSL and would consider something mounted if in that range, but probably just looking for the flat ski.

The 182 should be just fine. Esp if you liked the 184 over the new 187 as the 187 is a more demanding ski than the 184bg. God that new 187 is sweet.Quote:

[edit]The 187s were very similar to my Down CD 114s in 182, at least in terms of the "size" of the terrain I'd ski them in. Knowing how my first pair of 182 GPOs turned (mounted for touring), I swapped the 187s for another pair of 182s.
They're really close (182 & 187) in most respects, although the 187s felt a bit less grabby (turn radius?) which might be a consideration in the PNW.[/edit]
