Or when management doesn't make priorities clear, then blames their charges.
Time for a team meeting, appoint a committee to develop a written set of approved priorities and goals, then get those on organization-wide (not just the team/branch/department) email for input, then another meeting and committee to reconcile the changes, then another wide-sprayed vetting...etc.
I think everyone is missing the most important thing: making a PowerPoint showing the progress on these tasks. Definitely more important than completing the actual work.
This year, Edward Tufte -- the famous theorist of information presentation -- made precisely that argument in a blistering screed called The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint. In his slim 28-page pamphlet, Tufte claimed that Microsoft's ubiquitous software forces people to mutilate data beyond comprehension.

I had a boss that rarely talked to me, except for sending out vague emails chastising our department from time to time despite the fact that his office was 100' away. You are not doing xyz properly. OK Tom, how would you like us to handle that in the future? No guidance/direction until the nastygram came. I realized I needed to cover my ass so I would send him emails telling him what I was doing and the reason I was doing it that way, but I'd never hear back until he did his Monday morning quarterback thing if something happened outside of our control that would make option B better.
He dressed down his managers in front of their subordinates and often did the opposite of what any decent manager knows not to do. Worst boss ever and the best part is that he taught management classes at a private university.
People that get all flustered with ambiguity, then get pissy when they ask for support for a framework and you explain that the whole thing is just to remove the ambiguity for them.
I worked at IBM several years. On more than one occasion our group was required to submit charts that charted the status of status charts of forecasts. Which I think makes the actual work 3x removed. Insanity. Bad pipelines were always correlated to increases in chart requirements
If it didn’t happen in Sharepoint, did it really happen?
Since things have changed and I don't care anymore I've become pretty tolerant. Generally speaking I let spelling/grammar errors slide esp. in this age of auto correct/fill but this one is just too much for me. From a local farm & garden FB page:
Pasture for rent for one horse. Has a ditch with running water and a lien two for shelter. We do irrigate so pasture should be good for a couple months.
There will be horses across the fence.

condolences eh, I was the guy who actualy did something, I went out to meet the end loser, fix his broken shit and take him to the promised land
I was just splaning to the bartender tonite that the real job of every first line IBM manger was actualy to protect his team from the corporate rhetoric/BS and the best managers were really good at walking that line
The 30 yar career at IBM was just like a rodeo event, you get on you hang on you ride for 8 seconds to the bell,
there will be a whole lot of bull in between
Lady behind me at the post office was a habitual sigher. Sure, service was slow, line was long, the usual post office crap. But everybody else doesn’t new to be informed of your displeasure over and over. Like every 30 seconds. We are all dealing with the same thing.
Then she lets out a really loud sigh while I’m at the counter. So I turn around and look her in the eye, smile, then proceed to take my sweet ass time asking questions about the stamps. “So exactly how long is “Forever?””. Kinda made my day at that point.
On vacation en Mexico and I'm a pool guy. I don't usually wear goggles unless I'm swimming laps cuz I don't want to look like a douche. Not sure how people swim without opening their eyes, but it doesn't work for me. This is a big, beautiful pool with an attached swim up bar, so I understand they will over chlorinate. Dive in and swim < 25' before my eyes are literally burning up.
I bought a pair of swim goggles so I'm fine except I forgot them when I swam across to the bathroom (never pee in a pool) and my eyes were burning even last night at bed time. Usually it takes a while to feel the heavy chlorine, but this is by far the most chlorine I've ever experienced in a pool. Great resort, but my TA review and comment card will definitely mention it, to no avail of course.
Crazy thing is that what you experienced is usually the result of NOT ENOUGH chlorine! When what happened to you occurs, it's typically a sign of a gross pool that is not well maintained with a pH and chlorine all out of wack. Sometimes its tough for a hotel though since they can't shut down a pool long enough after a big event where it's been heavily abused to do the proper shock treatment, re-chlorinate, and let it all off-gas before swimmers can get back in.
That's not a grammar error, just hilarious ignorance in its purest form. Reminds me of the time we got an invite to one of AC's 2nd cousin's wedding. Now, for context, these people live in Provo and think it's the greatest place on Earth. The invite said that the ceremony would be followed by a "lunch-in." Bless their little hearts.
As someone who dislikes public pools in general, a pool with a swim-up bar at a resort in Mexico is a hard pass.
I get it, but enjoy the water too much. this is the same anywhere you go though, not exclusive to Mexico. When i heard Olympic swimmers say they always pissed in the pool i was shattered:)
