I've got two daughters, 10 and 12 years old. I teared up this morning when they asked me in the car on the way to school this morning who won the election. And the silence that followed when I told them was awful. I thought as a society we were better than this. I'm so angry and sad for them, and for all the other women and people that aren't straight white men. What in the actual fuck is wrong with people?Quote:

I admit it does make me question whether I want to raise him in a county that is tilting more and more towards the modern conservative maga world view. I can handle some kooky ideas combined with "don't let the government tell me what to do" libertarian-conservatism, but I don't know that I'm up for an annual battle to keep fringe nutjobs off the school board, public health commission, etc.

Silver lining (thin, maybe fleeting little whisps of silver)... 7 of 10 states passed their measures to protect reproductive rights, including the one in which I'm raising girls.

I'm choosing to see this approaching time period as one for focusing on building community and relationships, spending as much time as possible with friends and family, raising resilient children. Laughing a lot with our people. Worrying less about shit beyond our control, yet engage fully on matters in which we have voice. Being the good folks, not the shitbags.

1. Be kind, even to people who aren’t.
2. Be honest. Period.
3. Don’t let fear make decisions.
4. Always work hard and never, ever give up.
5. Sisters love and protect each other, no matter what happens.
All this election bullshit changes nothing about how we will interact with the world, nor how we expect them to interact with the world. When our older daughter asked what will “happen now,” we told her that nothing changes—we will still be kind and honest to everyone —and more importantly—we will NOT be afraid to be kind and honest to everyone. At their age, it’s all they need to know.
I believe my girls can help make the world a better place and this election did nothing to change that, even if it feels a little darker. The world needs good people. Giving in is giving up and that’s not an option.

Today I got to walk my 18yo through the whole emergency roadside service thing when her Forester threw a rod on I-90 between Missoula and Butte, leaving her stranded. She got it towed to a nearby town and fortunately her boyfriend lives in Butte and was able to come get her. From what I can tell and what the towtruck driver said the engine is toast.
When you have two daughters living away from home driving the roads of America you keep your phone close and ringer volume up.
