The manager explained that, during the summer, demand for ale drops considerably, and if he runs all 8 lines, they don't "shift" the beer often enough. My experience with real ale has been very hit or miss. I've generally regarded it as something that's pleasant enough while I'm there, but not anything I'd seek out. That said, I hadn't thought to check the CAMRA guides. Maybe I'm just going to the wrong places...
