X-Post with kid's gear swap thread: I know that there's plenty of ski race parents in here, so... looking for advice on ski lengths for my kiddo. She's a second year U12 in age class, but is pretty back of the pack in that group (meaning she's obviously a good racer because it's age class, but she and I both know she's not the next Mikaela so her gear doesn't have to be perfect). I have googled but the results are not consistent.
She needs new SL and GS skis for this year, and has grown a bit, and me not being an alpine skier or a racer has me a little stumped on sizing. How would y'all measure for her? Last year's skis were 130SL, 135GS, 130 free skis (Gotamas).
She's 4'9", and 87lbs without any ski clothes or gear or boots on.
Should I be bumping each of those up by 5cm? More (or should the difference in sizing be more like 10cm)? Can she squeeze another season out of the Gots as a free ski she hardly ever uses? Thoughts?
I'd think 10 cm would work, especially since she's still growing. That said, I've found the manufacturers weight tables to be pretty accurate.
And I think that Gotama's will be too small.
And Danno if you are unaware, don't sell last year's skis. You won't get shit, and til you have good cover they're this year's trainers and rock skis...
There should be a rule for junior racing that all racers must use only one pair of skis for slalom, gs, and training. Ridiculous that kids get three plus sets of new skis each year. Another rule that says you have to race slalom and gs in your normal coat and pants rather than fancy downhill suits. Take some expense and affluence out of the sport and the US might actually be able to compete with countries like Austria.
Bode Miller famously won the GS and Super G (second in Slalom despite falling) in the 96 JO Championships using the production version of the K2 Four. Did he use different size skis, or just the same ski for all three events?
I forgot to post this, our U-14 granddaughter won the Intermountain Division slalom finals at Snowbird on March 27th. Not bad for a WI girl who had never raced anywhere except WI & MI. Honestly we (mom, dad, grandparents) thought a top 10 finish would have been pretty good. After her first run she was .02 behind but threw down on her second run for a win. Liz is a second year 12, strong kid. She’s on 136 SL, 156 GS and free skis on 157’s. 4’10” 70 pounds.
I think your right in there for SL but don’t go up to 140. Gs should be longer for sure

I would be looking at a 150 GS and probably a 135 or 140 SL depending on her ability and speed. Can you use the 130 free skis? Yes, but they will be really short and she probably won't feel stable. If she doesn't get to use them much maybe you can find a good deal on some longer used free skis. I typically go for the same length as their current GS ski as a starting point for free ski sizing. Racer kids are generally way ahead of the non-racer target market for kids free skis, so the soft cores of what might be the manufacturer's recommended length will feel pretty lifeless.
Buy used race skis if you can. They are usually in pretty good shape and can be had for a song.
My kids love Tichy camp. My son was there in early July (camp #4) after a week at Party Beach which he loved.Attachment 425248
They were there together! Love the camp Lyndsey and Marcus put on as well!

This X 2. Racers are definitely ahead of their peers. Our granddaughter went from Moment 146 Carson's to 162 Bella's for her recreational skis and she handled the additional size just fine. The thing about racers is they know skis, they can tell how stable or not they are, they can do short turns, long turns etc and figure out quickly how much they like a pair of skis. I have posted this before but this is her in 2021 at 11 on the 162 Bella's.Attachment 425265

I never posted back in here to thank everyone for the advice re race skis. I contacted her coaches and it looks like y'all are generally all in agreement, the recommendation is around 145 GS skis and 135 SL skis (I will just try to find some free skis similar in length to the GS). I know my kiddo isn't as strong a skier as detrusor's so those lengths would be too much for her.
Anyway, if anyone is holding something useful, give me a shout.
Kids playing some imaginary game with the stairwell light after the 6yob got new skis and boots. Both went to bed with their helmets on.
No pics of 6yo in New boots and skiis since that's all he had on!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...35e43c4863.jpg
