Okay. Now I am jealous. Plans laid to get up and out with my son next weekend. He is stoked to get out in the snow.
J- So is that one of those things you say to yourself when the skiing was meh?
Or not?
lindsey was gonna have a social media meltdown if nobody would ski with her so i obliged

Sugar bowl delivered today, this season is off to the races!!
Totally worthy, top 1/3 of the zipper was money, the last 2/3 you needed to be light on your feet, no core shots but your gonna hit stuff with blower over little to no base. will be better with a little consolidation and a bit more snow

Thought I would weigh in on this thread finally. Been lurking pretty hard but haven't posted yet this year.
Anyway, I ran into a couple Mags last tuesday morning on top of the Hourglass. We all yo-yoed the skin track, but I had to leave pretty early. I think you both said your name was Erik but forgive me if my memory has faded after all the pie and turkey these last few days. Any of you guys??
My thought as well. http://www.pacificcrestsnowcats.com/ is a little more than half the price.
Ward peak at AM has been ready to go since Friday (this is more than just my own speculation)... wonder when they'll finally take it off money hold? A lot of nice snow just sitting up there. I liked the dual Squaw / Alpine pass at first but I'm long over the lack of competition between resorts at this point. I mean, c'mon!
Has anyone poked around Luther pass or driven by since this last storm? How much snow on the house's?
burly.
I know it's no where near Tahoe, but was up in Ashland, OR for Thanksgiving with the folks. Mt. Ashland WAS GOOD, 12-18" of pow with good coverage. Gf who came with did not tell me that she had never snowboarded powder (she's from the ice coast...) so 2 laps was cut down to 1... :frown: At least it was deep enough that she couldn't just side slip/ snow plow everything
Squaw was skiing pretty well today. Rock skis were a necessity though! Rumor is that a sewage pipeline burst during summer construction, leaking into the snowmaking pond up top. Hence the delayed opening. I guess all that manmade snow has e coli.

Caw caw!
more, but not a whole lot more.
it is rocky and not the good kind. the hidden undercut granite boulder kind that hurt you as much as your skis. plus lots of downed trees although some of that has been cleaned up way down low. i used to always be the first in there but learned my lesson and am now always a late entry. hi speed tree skiing and hidden rocks don't mix much. i never got hurt bad, just had numerous bad experiences there going early. even so, you never know until you go, and a bad day skiing is still better than most other stuff at its best.
This is one of those those E's. Nice shots from Squaw BTW! We're headed to relay tomorrow morning. Any of you been out there the past few days?

today wasn't bad at all. things did crust up a bit overnight from the wind/sun/?warm air advection? the one thing i can say is it seemed like the transition from stout crust to consolidated pow was a consistent and manageable one. all pics of TahoeBC

Beware of unmarked obstacles, even though Powdork assured me he marked them all the day before with blades of grass

The most recent roundcam pic (the camera came up briefly Sunday afternoon after power was restored, but down again) suggests that it's pretty iffy anywhere but Alpine Bowl proper.
And I don't recall any season in which Alpine opened the top the first open weekend. It's not just a question of having enough snow to ski, but having enough snow and enough time to be able to get people out to set up all the stuff we take for granted during the season.
No shit?
Tip your waitress...
If AM was still separate from Squaw there's little doubt the summit would be open with at least Alpine Bowl. Whatever, it'll open soon enough. Remember, this wasn't my speculation but someone who would definitely know.
KSL the environmentalists. But don't worry, the mouth of Shirley Canyon and the valley aquifer will be just fine during construction!
^^ PM sent. ;-)
Cold temps really sucked some moisture out if the top layer turning the crust into hoar making skiing much better today. Still best below where the wind didn't get it. The wind did help to base us out so lotta stuff will be in play after next storm
^That's good to hear.
Shirley was fun while it lasted today. Supposed to be bit before we get snow again. Hoping there are multiple big storms on the way to open up some more terrain.
A few early season pics. Hopefully we can get some more snow here by mid-month.

^^ Love that first picture. Good stuff.
Did Sugarbowl start charging for uphill access last year, or is it just a new thing this year?
I mean it's not that hard to just start at the Pine Martin trailhead...for that side, but... :(
Started in 2013-14.
Yep. January 2014. Was a free pass at first, and then all hell broke loose at the beginning of that season because the only skinnable snow around Truckee was manmade. Fee for skinning there was a direct result of the drought.
Yeah I remember getting the free uphill pass. Well that's kinda a bummer
For sure. Plenty of other options around though. And you can still skin the PCT, to access Lake Runs, East Face of Judah, Benson Hut, etc. for free.

^^^^ you drag your pole when you make a right turn, but never when you make a left. interesting
also if someone is at squaw today how are the conditions? might go up tomorrow but I'm afraid things might be getting hard out there
A friend was telling me about that photo of the dogs, to cool!
Been sticking to the resorts the last few days, near whiteout conditions at Heavenly today, but the snow is still skiing good it's been cold up there, they cranked up Comet today, you could only ski down to Tamarack though, groomers were working to get the lower part of the run back to east peak ready, maybe tomorrow.
I'll be at SVUSAINTERNATIONAL this weekend...mornings free sans kids, afternoon with kids.
I think I'll be rocking the slalom skis in the afternoon based on the current forecast.
Heading to SB Saturday am early to kick this thing off...
