Yup, pretty old thing. Learned about it in the 80's trying to figure out what Aerosmith was singing about.

I had a friend (female) in high school who had a pet rabbit that passed away. She had a story about how, when she reported this to her grandmother, the grandmother turned white and almost fainted. That's when I learned about the phrase "the rabbit died".
We've got a Calphalon set that didn't hold up to the use. The coating has flaked off.
Cook Illustrated likes the OXO one.

If you have any tea drinkers on your gift list, there is nothing better than a bone china tea set. Elegant to drink from, and if you buy a tea set for one, it's a very personal gift which will make the recipient think of you every time they use it. Making and drinking a proper cup of tea (no tea bags!) provides a 10 minute break in the day which is relaxing and almost meditative. I've given this gift a few times - it's unexpected, and always really appreciated. You can get bone china widely - here's a place in Seattle which also ships....

JHC, those OXO's are cheap. I had Calphalon and switched everything to Le Creuset. I thought the discount wasn't a bad deal:

Origins lotion was the trick! Of course she used about $4 worth before I could suggest that she doesn't need as much of this as she is used to. LOL. Anyway, she was very happy. She has wicked dry hands. And as a potter, very much needs her fingers in working order. The lady deserves the best.
The gloves worked out too in a way. I got the closest thing I could figure out and saved the receipt. She will go get the right ones tomorrow...
Thanks for the slipper suggestions. Didn't end up with Uggs, but found a nice pair from J Crew that she loves. I consider that a win!
Re: Calphilon non-stick. We had a stovetop to oven large piece where the nonstick started to flake after about 4 years of solid use. Took it to Williams Sonoma to see if we could send it in for repair. They ended up warranting it and fixing it for free. No questions asked. Told this is common practice.
We're an All-Clad/Le Cruset/Staub family and this is our only Caphilon but after this we will definitely look to them in the future.
All the non-stick wears after a while regardless of brand.
That's awesome - glad the hand lotion worked out! I need to get some more. This cold snowy weather combined with much cooking and cleaning over the holiday has left my hands rather parched. Nothing works like that lotion IMO.
S'all good - don't have to be Uggs. Lots of great slippers out there to keep her lovely toes warm and toasty!
KQ, here's one you missed: http://www.forbes.com/sites/brucelee.../#5149535d40cf
You should, no nasty pics and it's pretty funny
Uhhh huh.....

You can trust me. It's interesting comment on today but nothing new. Kind of like when you could send $5.00 + S&H to get the "Secret to Lager, Firmer Breasts" and get a pamphlet showing how to press your palms together. Lady has a nice shtick. Rated PG
Paging KQ Claus.....Mother's Day gift ideas please.
I think most people these days are into IPA breasts.
Ugh.. Mother's Day. That day when Mom/wife says "oh don't worry about me.... your love is enough" but all the commercials on TV tell you if you don't go over the top to show your love and appreciation you're a toad stool.
My Mom lives in a retirement community so my default has become buying and planting flowers in the containers on her deck and a nice dinner out with chocolates from our wonderful chocolate store Brights (voted #1 chocolate store in Washington!).
I'm not a Mom but if I had to choose a gift for myself I think the best gift would be time spent with my family that did not involve me doing any cooking, cleaning or planning. In other words - a day off from all those everyday things a Mom and wife does everyday and a little show of appreciation, recognition and love for the same.
If you have young children it also seems like Mom would love some sort of hand-made craft that says "Love you Mom" - something simple from the heart. Finger paints, macaroni art etc. I think there are places now you can take your kid to that provide the means to do some cool crafty stuff.
If you're an old married couple with grown kids maybe she'd like to feel young and carefree again which brings us back to a night on the town or a day/weekend at the beach with a picnic, an easy hike in the woods, a nice scenic drive somewhere with stops along the way for wine tasting, antiquing etc. etc. Remember - this is about her so the more you do what she wants regardless of what you want is a major gift.
Mother's day to me has always seemed to be more about showing love through appreciation rather than gift giving (i.e. Christmas).
That all said if a gift is to be given I would go with something that is for her and her only like jewelry if she likes it, perfume, accessories etc. Something feminine.
Also - I think having flowers delivered is always nice or maybe a tree or shrub that can commemorate the day for years to come.
I just ordered a massage table for my wife's mother's day present.
Thanks for that KQ
Why are we pestering KQ for Mothers' Day? This is the KQ Claus thread. Santa only comes once a year. ...And even then, it's down a chimney... ;)
So my wife sent me a link to a jacket she wanted. When it got delivered I put the package on the hall table. When she saw the package whe was upset because I "ruined the surprise".
Should I :
(A) Return the jacket and order the same thing again
(B) Return the jacket and get her the new broom we need
(C) Tell her she is not my mother, return the jacket and use the credit to get something for me.
If it helps, I got her a shovel last year and she hurt her back.
Typical male response. That's what I thought too. Paging KQ
i would say you're too old to make that mistake. : )
If your're married long enoug, sometimes you can make a mistake asking if they want more coffee. IME
i mean leaving it on the table and ruining the surprise
She sent me the LL Bean link with the exact jacket and told me the color and size. What's the surprise? OTOH, It hasn't been mentioned since it arrived two weeks ago so perhaps she forgot all about it by now. At our age it's possible.
