Interesting...
Speaking on how NF streaming works, lately I've been finding that their "Recommendations" at the end of whatever film you are watching have been WAY off.
For example, last night I watched this eccentric French film titled IP5: Island of the Pachyderms, which was about a graffiti artist and his car jacking side-kick who take a road trip in search of a lost love. At the end NF recommended Ip Man, Ip Man 2, and Legend of the Fist, three martial arts movies that have little in common with the film I just watched. Go figure.
What are some good Kung fu flicks on Netflix? I'm old school and think wire flying sucks. Ip man and the sequel were right up my alley.
Most of the martial arts flix I've found streaming are New School (late '80s, '90s and present day), which are pretty much all flying wire.
That said, there are some great ones of that ilk available, imho.
1. Wing Chun - starring Donnie Yen and Michelle Yeoh with fight choreography from Yuen Woo Ping
2. Wu Dang - a nice modern wuxia (Splat and a few others here dug it, too)
3. Tai Chi Zero & Tai Chi Hero - these are two of my favorite newer (as in 2012/2013) martial arts films. Very comic booky, but incredibly well acted and well directed, plus they feature a ton of Old School actors/kung fu legends in bit parts.
4. King of Beggars - a Stephen Chow comedy where he does sleeping kung fu. Hella goofy, but entertaining
Most of the other Asian Action fare on NF is relegated to triad/cop thrillers, supernatural thrillers, etc.
I do believe Ong Bak is streaming, but not sure which ones (really, only the first Ong Bak is worth watching in terms of the story/plot, the second and third do have some solid fight sequences, though). There are a few other Thai films on there, but I haven't seen many of them, plus their production values vary greatly, mostly leaning towards really poor acting/directing, but with amazing fight sequences.
They have a bunch of Jackie Chan's late '80s flicks on there, but I believe most of them are dubbed in English (I prefer to watch my kung fu films in Chinese with subtitles, but that's just me).
Been really enjoying Orange Is the New Black. Anyone else?
Just finished it... there's a thread on it somewhere here. Great stuff, and I think you guys who don't like Chapman, are ghey. :fmicon:
Seriously, I don't get the dissing as I think she does a great job. Semi understated, but it works for me. Just an amazing cast all around... emmy on the way.
Derek has been pretty good so far.
^^ I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes to be honest...

House of Cards
Try the Brit version to see how crazy the US version is going to get. 3 series for Brits, 1 so far for US.
RAGING PHOENIX...(available until 10/14)
Drunken Muy Thai (Meyraiyuth*) with a breakdancing slant (while the hip-hop angle might turn some off, keep in mind that original NYC b-boys based their dance moves on martial arts, so this is merely paying tribute to that legacy).
The final fight sequence is worth the watch alone.
*according to Wikipedia, Meyraiyuth is a fictional martial art: "Meyraiyuth — also known as "drunken Muay Thai," it is featured in the 2009 Thai film Raging Phoenix. It is primarily a combination of Muay Thai and breakdancing, but also features athletic skills from other disciplines, such as Parkour and gymnastics, along with cooperative techniques that often resemble figure skating or swing dancing. This style derives much of its effectiveness from the unpredictability of the fighters, who often rely on punctuated movements, as well as exotic postures and unintuitive maneuvers. While Meyraiyuth may superficially resemble Capoeira, it is distinguishable by its lack of the Ginga "stance," and by its intentionally confusing movements, which may be punctuated and irrythmic." - taken from this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...l_martial_arts
Just started watching this series called "Breaking Bad." About a high school chemistry teacher who starts cooking meth to pay for his cancer treatments. Half way into first season; pretty good so far.
Maybe my SAM (Sarcasm Alert Monitor) is broken but the finale aired last week. The show gets better and better and better and ...

errrr, I'm on episode four of season one. FKNA.
Not sure if this has been said yet but...
TV show: Episodes.
Killing me right now...first 3 episodes.
Kind of like Curb Your Enthusiasm meets the Inbweeners meets Arrested Development meets Extras.
Edit. After the first 3 if falls off steeply...
Ip Man is the new Wong Fei Hung
KILL LIST
this flick is a crazy blend of several different genres. it starts out slow and builds up gradually, but it's worth the time and effort that it takes to get sucked in (and believe me, you'll get sucked in hard).
very British, very violent, and very twisted; it surprised the heck out of me (although it has quite the sterling reputation amongst genre aficionados and was a hit at several festivals prior to release).
Not sure if this was mentioned yet or not (a search turned up nada, btw):
TODD & THE BOOK OF PURE EVIL
This series comes from Manitoba and proves that Canadian TV is totally f@#ked up (in a majorly good way). This ain't no Sweet Valley High, that's for sure.
A complete off-the-nuts stoner's wet dream genre mash-up that pays obvious homage to Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, Scooby Doo, The In-Betweeners, Jay & Silent Bob, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Spinal Tap, Ferris Bueller, Parker Lewis, and many, many more, as well as containing references to countless heavy metal bands/icons, heavy metal musical mythology (pay attention to the name of the high school), demonology, classic Greek/Roman mythology, short stories like "The Monkey's Paw", classic horror films (The Exorcist, amongst others), cult films (Flesh Gordon, The Little Shop of Horrors, amongst others) all wrapped up in a familiar "high school can be hell" motif lathered in completely un-PC splatter comedy, not to mention a plethora of advanced (and, or course, pedestrian) dick & fart jokes. Lots of stuff going on in this series if you really pay attention...
Whoa. Whoa. Whoa.

This wines a mashup of bordeaux favorites - Latour, Lafite, Margaux - the heavy hitters from Burgundy - like a great Montrachet, but with some inspirations from the great oaky Chardonnays like a ripe 80s Kendall-Jackson, hit over the head with hints of the best of New Zealand sav blancs, all wrapped up in a packaging that's a cross between Night Train and OE800s playing Edward 40 hands right in your crotch while you take tabs of blue blotter and buttsmoke a crack pipe during the choking game with your dads favorite Robert Talbot tie.
American Mary
Dark flick about a hot broke med school chick that does dastardly body modification procedures on people for a variety if reasons. Very f*cked up sh*t. Worth watching, but not a date movie or fir the kiddies.
Started watching Breaking Bad. Pretty crazy.
Prolly shouldn't watch Todd and The Book of Pure Evil without a bong sesh.
All.I.Can is available right now. Pretty sweet.
Thank you to whoever recommended Bronson. Crazy but true.
All.I.Can was a disappointment. The sessions we had already seen here (JP skiing through town to the bus and the septagenarians truck shuttling BC lines were awesome but the rest were - meh.)
I thought All.I.Can. was phenomenal. Incredible cinematography, fantastic editing, awesome soundtrack, and the most all star lineup of any movie, ever.
THE LEGEND IS BORN: IP MAN
This just popped up for streaming. It's the third movie to feature Ip Man and is pretty much set up as a prequel to the Donnie Yen films. Of the four Ip Man flix I've seen (Ip Man, Ip Man 2, Legend is Born, The Grandmaster), it's one of my favorites and definitely worth a watch.
Donnie Yen is the new Jet Li and Ip Man is the new Wong Fei Hung.
Just started on Todd and the book of pure evil, pretty entertaining.
Also, Don't trust the B---- in Apartment 23 is worth a look.

Freaks and Geeks Holy fuck! Best show ever, had never watched an episode until yesterday.
Now, I know that sounds retarded, but in my defense I was living in North Jersey in 1999.
Question: should I stop watching it now on Netflix and purchase the DVD’s due to soundtrack limitations? (most of the reviews mentioned the fact that the Netflix episodes use a generic soundtrack in place of the songs they couldn’t purchase)
