It seems that the controlled stop into a Sitzmark is a lost art.

If it's fitness that you're after, 1/4 mile with my DIY groomer would get the heart pumping and exercise the glutes.

It's made out of eight 2x4s. In the past, I welded up the same design with metal construction. After spending $$$ on tracked UTV and no welder on hand, I opted to build a wood one to save $$ and just get some grooming done. If the trail gets icy, it won't work as obviously wood won't cut snow like a metal groomer with sharp "blades". This one works great for soft snow.

You can use corrugated PVC to lay down corduroy. Haven't installed that yet. Problem with wood design is it is too light to "cut" if trail is hardened. In the metal version I had, I added a bunch of weight to the compacting area in the back. You can also install a trailer jack on a small ski to raise/lower blades for variable cutting depth.

Been skijoring with the pup lately. Got a Ruffwear harness with a quick release. Dog freaking loves it, wears him out for sure. Tangles and encountering other people/dogs is annoying but I think he's getting better. Definitely makes XC skiing more fun. They've been grooming a few miles of track out on our lake and that was pretty fun, he hates kite boarders though.

I used to do that with my various huskies. Felt like a Lance Armstrong doper going up hills. That extra 10% or whatever is amazing. I guess it's like a biological "e-bike" on skis.

Just read an article about a bike-joring race happening in Moab. Haha, sounds dangerous AF to me.

Our guy is part husky, but looks like a black lab. He definitely has the instincts of a Husky to pull all day long though. Need to get him stronger and he'll be hauling me all over, he's only 1yo. Out on the groomer, he kinda wanders more. I think he's better focused on single track in the woods. I'm on three pins and BC/XC skis too, which are better on the varied terrain and not the groomed track.

Thanks much! Looks like a pallet could serve as the base. Maybe some notched boards or wood groomer teeth to cut up crusty snow…

Disadvantage of wood is it can chunk up with snow. Advantage of wood is I have to haul the groomer to the site, so a big metal groomer is just too heavy and cumbersome to haul.

This would work most of the time it would seem.

Only if it's only you skiing. Need more weight, snow cutting ability.

I remember years ago at Olympic park in Edmonton, a snowmobile would groom the skate track pulling drum made of diamond wire mesh, maybe 3’ diam, mounted on a weighted axle. The attachment towbars were set to pull the drum slightly askew to cut the ice. Worked really well to condition the track between refreshes (Edmonton is not known for its prairie powder). Can’t find a pic of it online unfortunately.
