Scared of intruders, but you're willing to step in a ring and risk getting leg submissions applied to a fucked up knee? Fuck that, when I'm training and someone attempts an ankle lock or knee bar they get kicked squarely in the face or balls. I don't want a fourth ACL surgery. Then again, its only the beginners who are dumb enough to try something like that.

I have military training. The Air Force, in its infinite wisdom, only sends us to the range to shoot 80 rounds every 3 years, but still thinks it's okay to give us guns every time we go out on a trip because we're "proficient"; naturally I'd like a little more range time than that, but it's impossible to get unless you get your own stuff.

Oh, and I'm considering becoming a police officer in Bozeman, but just not sure I want to be a 'cop'.

here is my two cents. yes i own firearms. yes they are loaded, at all times, because that is how i was taught. my dad always kept his guns loaded, because in his eyes "what good is a gun if it isn't loaded?" we don't live in a country where "official" training and licensing is required, unless you want to carry concealed. there is a difference in being paranoid, and using your brain. i have been looking down the barrel of a gun before, a .45 long colt, in a bar parking lot, and let me tell you that is a mighty big hole from that end. does that mean after that i started to carry? no, it doesn't. if i would have had a gun in that situation, i think i may have tried something, which maybe would have ended bad. now after that, did i start keeping my guns in my room? well they were always there, i just put one a little easier to grab, since that particular individual knew where i lived and was out for blood. funny, calling the cops, though, kept him away. here s where i will get some bad feelings from some people. i am not like my father, who is a card carrying hoo raa nra member. he packs everywhere he goes, is completely licensed and is convinced he can draw faster than the other guy if it comes to that. yeaaaaa :rolleyes2. my 30-30 saddle gun was from my cowboy days when i needed something to keep predators off of cattle. my .45 long colt is my noise maker for fishing up the south fork, or any other time i am in griz country. yes you won't probably kill them, but it is good for noise, and in my experience popping a round off in the air, is a hell of a lot more effective than just pissing one off. i am kinda a hipocrit with all of this though, i do have a 9mm hi point that i have for the simple reason my father gave it to me. i have very confusing feelings on guns. i don't agree with alot, but i also don't want to lose mine... but anyway, thats my $0.02.

WTF is your obsession with the maul, man? That's the one time in my life I wished I had a gun, But I didn't. and I asked for help on what to do and the first response was "bash it in the head" and so I ran out and did exactly that as fast and efficiently as I was able to do it.

I'm not a hunter, it never even occurred to me to slit the poor thing's throat, but even if I had, would it have been any better? I killed the thing to stop it's suffering. I did the best job I could with the knowledge and tools I had at hand.

They check your heart beat, take your BP and you do a blood test for HIV and Hep 1 and 2 beforehand. That's it. It's not a full body exam by any means... My knee gives out every now and then for an afternoon. That wasn't an acceptable risk to them. It wasn't something I was going to lie about becasue the repercussions in battle are severe if it did.

I suggest you pm Rontele, he is a trained grievance counselor with a specialty in PTSD. I will be skiing with him tomorrow, and I'll try to solicit some clinical advice from him. I know he works on a very effective sliding scale.

Yup. I think its hilarious gonehuckin thinks army training is automatically going to make you safer than a civilian.

While I really don't want to disrespect anyone, most cops have no clue how to shoot. I would think that a lot of non combat people in the military can't shoot very well.

The LA bank robbery is a perfect example. You hear that the problem was that the cops were not properly armed and didn't have anything that could penetrate body armor. While I don't know off hand how many cops were there, or how long it lasted, but if any of them could shoot worth shit someone would have gotten a head shot. They returned a decent amount of fire, but could only get limb and torso hits.

Thats because there is a hell of a lot to their job other than shooting, so training doesn't get budgeted or whatever.

Oh and the topic of this thread is about PROTECTION....not "What guns do you think are fun to shoot?" So why a pic of assault rifles with "ready to go"?

Prepared would be good lighting, a security system, not being an easy target, a deadbolt and a cell phone.

Preparedness is a funny thing. I have pretty good lighting. I don't have a security system. I have deadbolts and a cell phone that stays next to my bed too. If you are relying on your local police to save you in the event of a break in you are in trouble.
