What's on Your 2023 Bucket List?

We have a lot of well-traveled and fairly interesting mountain bikers in the group, so I thought it would be interesting to see where folks are heading this spring/summer/fall, or where they're hoping to go. I'll kick things off (these are outside of our Chasing Epic trips):

May: Spearfish
August or September: Rossland/Castlegar/Nelson
October: TBD (maybe Bend or PNW for 4-5 days)
November: Peru

I'd also love to fit in a trip to the North Shore and Vancouver Island, but I doubt that's going to happen this year.

I want to get back up to Ashland, OR again this year, but this time when the upper mountain is open. I went twice last year, on Memorial Day and First weekend of November, and both times upper mountain was snowed in. Time Warp looks so fun. I've got a buddy who moved up there, so it's pretty sweet to have a place to stay and a local guide.

Other than that, I want to go back to Nisene (Santa Cruz) with a guy who knows the area to ride some of the sweet illegal trails back there. That's just a day trip though.

Now that I'm back in the PNW I have a couple of lesser traveled big backcountry days on my mind.
-Pyramids Loop in Central Oregon
-Lower Dungeness and Gold Creek out on the peninsula
-Some riding around Goat Mountain in the Gifford Pinchot

Then I'd like to explore the trail systems around Portland like Post, Yacolt, Sandy and the 44 network. Throw in some Oakridge weekends for good measure.


If anyone has suggestions for rides of a similar nature, lemme know.

North Shore + Squamish, and east as long as time allows.

Me, Pyrenees or Finale Ligure would be the bees knees.

Also, Apex even day without a dipshit hiker would make my day.

- Go ride in BC if they will let me into Canukistan.

- Maybe go back to MX or South America to ride/race.

Most likely will just stay close to home (San Juans) and explore the vast amount of obscure riding that I haven't done yet.
Goal for the year though is the full pull Calico point-to-point. evdog did a TR on it awhile back. Tons of climbing, even more descending, lots of janky moto trail, big views, not a lot of people.

Nothing crazy, but all new to me places

-Fruita
-backcountry rides in the Sawtooths
-PNW (no clue where yet)

We're headed back to Italy in August. Seriously looking to buy property, even though it's probably way out of reach for us. Saw a shack for $70k and it really got us stoked.

Won't be fit enough for big dumb ideas for awhile, but it'll be awhile before those are melted out anyway. And there are always small dumb ideas.

If you want a big day on 44 trails, try parking at Eightmile campground, ride up Eightmile (south side), up Lookout Mountain, down Cedar Creek, up Fifteenmile, back via Lookout Mountain, Eightmile (north side). Need NW Forest Pass.

Tarbell Trail out of Yacolt also delivers (need Discovery pass).

North Pyramid sounds like enough for me. Transcascadia Excursions has a shuttle in July but I think they typically don't get enough people to do it. Maybe I can get trained up by then.

Not interested in Bend? Riding up Mrazek, going around Tumalo Mountain and back is a long day in the saddle. Have to wait until Aug 15 to take Flagline. I did this once where we went around Tumalo and crossed the highway to do Tiddlywinks on the way back to town. That was a day.

Gonna take burros up to the highest possible singletrack in Perú that we can ride before it is glacier. I think I am there a week before Smokan, but if the timing works, who knows?

Also up: getting stupid high in Colorado, and fairly high in Squamish and Whistler.
And not taking any bad tumbles.

Couple of interior BC trips this spring. Nelson, because it's maybe my favorite place to ride a bike, Golden, because I haven't ridden there in a while, and fernie, because it's close, easy, and good.

France in August. Gonna see if killing time at work by staring at maps results in consistent epic riding, or mostly just getting very lost in a country where I don't speak the language.

Probably some more BC trips in the fall. TBD.

I've heard that the cheap properties in Italy can be tricky. Murky ownership claims and expensive repairs / upgrades required by the municipalities.

But I've had the same thought. It'd be pretty awesome to own a spot in the Italian alps.

After doing the CT last summer I'd really like to bikepack the Chilcotins. Seems to be routes that have a good amount of singletrack since I'm not much of a fan of extensive road bikepacking.

I've travelled all over with skis, but I've never driven more than a few hours to ride. There's just so much riding nearby.

That said, I'm kicking around the idea of Antigua, Quatemala in November.

I have a few rides around here that I still need to tick off, mostly janky moto trails. I'm also hoping to do some more exploring in some of the more remote reaches of the Western Slope.

I've gotta spend some more time down in the San Juans too. I've barely scratched the surface down there.

We will hit various Kootenai riding destinations. Camping with a 2 and 5 year old changes the amount of riding from yesteryears, but it's hard to beat, and all within a 5 hour drive.

I still haven't hit Crowes Nest pass and intend to do that this summer. I will be searching for camping beta at some point...

This fall Mrs. Eluder and I are making up for a lost covid trip and heading to Chamonix for a week, then off to do a point to point ride from Lake Garda to Lake Como.

Doubtful I'll be checking rides off the bucket list this year or in the near future, but I'd be stoked to end the season having spent a good bit of time at Snowshoe, Rock Creek, and Kanuga.

I am moving to Colorado this summer and am excited to explore many new zones, both on the bike and on the skis.

We've been bouncing a Guatemala trip around for November or March as well. I was there a long time ago, but my wife hasn't been and is intrigued. We would try to get out on some shuttle rides around Antigua and then spend time around Atitlán. We'd have our kids with us, so not a super adventurous time on bikes, but still awesome to mix into a trip

Mountain bike, supported. Many of the trails are only bikeable late season, because of hiking-only closures to my understanding.

I’m just going to troll this thread and steal everyone’s good ideas:)

Only goal is keep exploring and riding more! Ride new to us stuff in MT, ID, WA, CA and maybe BC or Alberta. So much to ride every season and the high country season is a long ways out. We’ll see where the receding snow line takes us!

I forgot to add on my list: going to Asheville, NC in July. Going to get 3 days of riding in the Pisgah area with my brother in law acting as a tour guide. I've got a rental Nomad 6 reserved from a local shop (same bike I currently ride). I'm really looking forward to riding dramatically different trails from what we've got here. Well, except for the humidity and heat.
